UFC 72 is currently scheduled for July 7 and the fight card will feature at least two title fights. Anderson Silva will make his second title defense of the UFC Middleweight title against Nathan Marquardt. Silva recently fought Travis Lutter in what turned out to be a non-title fight after Lutter failed to make weight. Prior too that fight, Silva had suffered some pretty extensive damage to his knee and has since had surgery and is recovering.
With Rich Franklin’s recent victory over Jason MacDonald at UFC 68, some fans were speculating that he would get a title shot rematch right away against Silva. However, Franklin will get another fight to prepare for his rematch and, personally, I think its probably better that way. Franklin still needs some time to get back into the groove and prepare for a fight with Silva; you have to remember that he is coming back from having a broken hand and “broken” face. What I anticipate happening is that Franklin will face the winner of the Mike Swick vs Yushin Okami matchup at UFC 69, with the winner of that fight being next in line for a shot at the Middleweight belt.
The UFC lightweight title will also be on the line as Sean Shert will make his first title defense against Hermes Franca. Sherk has nought fought since winning the belt in this fight with Kenny Florian. In that fight Sherk suffered a rotator cuff injury and has been recovering since that time. Franca is, of course, coming off a victory over Spencer Fisher at UFC Fight Night 8.

u know i cant really speak on nathan marquadt i havent seen him fight but he beat dean lister he must be pertty good but silva is a beast and if nathan is going to stand with him i think hes in for trouble. Now i love sean sherks attitude but in the end hes a wrestler and ground and pound i dont really like to see so i going for franca he was awesome in the fisher fight
Lots of potentially, very exciting news here. A lot to take in. Let’s see…it seems like many people are not too familiar with Marquardt, even though I’ve been told he is a seasoned veteran of the octagon for that reason, I’m still not sure if that would sell the fight as the main event.
If a Franklin/Swick scenario plays out here, I would be one very happy UFC fan. I have been wanting to see that one for over a year now.
I was watching a re-airing of a recent Ultimate Fight Night, the “Spiders” debut…it was weird how the “tale of the tape” listed both Silva and Leben at 5’11…yet when they approached each other, it was so blatently obvious that Silva was at least 5 inches taller…he has to be more like 6’1…either that or Leben is like 5’6.
Anyways, sorry for the rant…
Anyone hear of who Chuck Liddell is fighting next?? Someone said Tito vs Dean and Liddell vs ?? (I can’t remember)
It was a new guy to the site…
Man!!! what is up with kimo calling out Dana White lol, Dr. J what is up with that?
huh? kimo called out dana? thats funny and weird
sherdog asked dana white if rampage would be next for liddel and dana didnt say no or yes sherdog even said that if wandy would of won it would have been him and dana didnt try to correct him so who knows
I know alot of ppl dont know bout nate the great but he is no slouch!!! He may be a better challenge than a lutter, swick, okami, or mayby even franklin!!! Hes a 7 time king of pancrase, very good kickboxer with pretty good wrestling skills with a wealth of knowledge in bjj.. He is also a very big and strong middleweight fighter with alot of expierience… not many ppl knew silva when he fought franklin and look at him now… Anderson silva seems to have a week takedown defense and he needs to correct it or he could be nuetrilized standing, takin down with ease (like lutter did to him) and possibly submitted or gnp by this unknown fighter who may be the most underated in the world.. my prediction honestly.. SILVA by very close s.d, SILVA by a sudden ko, or mayby just mayby MARQUARDT shocking the world by submitting silva in the 4th with a rear naked choke!!
