Frank Mir has been taken off the UFC Fight Night Card scheduled for April 5. Mir was scheduled to fight Antoni Hardonk, but reportedly was removed due to an injury. Some rumors are circulating that Mir was actually removed from the card by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but I haven’t been able to verify that yet.
Mir will be replaced by Justin McCully, who will make his UFC debut. McCully is one of Tito Ortiz’s training partners at Team Punishment and holds a 7-3-2 professional MMA record.
Now that Mir has been dropped from the card and Tim Sylvia just lost the belt, I think we are going to see a Frank Mir vs. Tim Sylvia matchup real soon. It is a fight that makes sense for both fighters and for the UFC.

THIS SUCKS I REALLY WANTED TO SEE FRANKIE???
Bah, he is washed up…not the same fighter at all after his accident. On a side note, I was on CBS sportsline (on Fox sports via boxing link) this morning and they have a tab for MMA under “more”. It is linked with boxing; but, Randy was there on the front page. You know big things are happening since the sports pages wouldn’t even acknowledge MMA before!
I doubt Sylvia/Mir will draw anything special. Mir has fallen from grace by far more than Sylvia has. On Sylvia’s side, I do not see why he would want a rematch, since it probably would not get him any more respect by beating up an already beaten up Frank Mir.
If Branden Vera does have 1 fight left on his UFC contract, I say let him get Sylvia..I would definitely pay to watch that.
Frank Mir will probably end up going to a smaller organization. He needs more time to heal, he had a major accident. Watching the guy right now isn’t even fun, he is sucking bad, I wonder if he can really ever get back to champion form. I personally, don’t think he has the fortitude to get back up and go at it like before after seeing his last few fights….
i would also pay to watch vera sylvia i think sylvia gave randy to much respect in that fight and thats why he lost hes to cautious but on the other hand i just dont like the guy and mir used to be an awesome fighter i think he just doesnt train as hard as he needs to
@MMAKansas
Too bad the WEC doesn’t have a heavyweight division: seems like it would be a natural place for Mir.
The guy is a Jui-Jitsu master and at that size and weight, very few men in MMA possess his natural talent. Whether it was the injury or not…the UFC had evolved so quickly in the year that he was out, it probably was not hard to lose focus and desire when there were so many new heavyweights at that time. I’m sure that to consistently compete at such a high level, a fighter needs to be in constant top shape and training. After he left, we had guys like Arlovski and Buentello, Mike Kyle (what happened to him btw)? and Justin Eilers step up in the division. His injury basically re-configured the entire HW division landscape.
Is Cheick Kongo still in the UFC?
@aFan
Cheick Kongo is still fighting, and although he recently loss to Gonzaga, he’s rumored to fight in UFC70
Sorry, it was Carmelo Marrero, according to Sherdog.
