Pride 2007 Lightweight Grand Prix

Stephan, over at mmatoronto.com, had a nice catch yesterday regarding the upcoming Pride Lightweight 2007 Grand Prix.

If you take a look at the Pride LWGP poster, you will see the faces of both Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez. As Stephan noted, the Pride LWGP traditionally has been held at a 160 lbs. weight limit, but now with the recent purchase of Pride by the Fertita’s it looks like the new weight limit will perhaps be at 170 lbs.

The other fighters to appear on the poster are:

  • Takanori Gomi
  • Luiz Buscape
  • Marcus Aurelio
  • Luiz Azevedo
  • Gilbert Melendez
  • Joachim Hansen
  • Tatsuya Kawajiri
  • Mitsuhiro Ishida
  • Shin’ya Aoki
  • Hayato “Mach” Sakurai

The opening round of the Lightweight Grand Prix is currently scheduled to begin in May. With Diego just having fought this past April 7, I wonder if he truly will be fighting in the Grand Prix; perhaps he will just fight on the second night of the opening round?

    @Dennis,

    yeah, I know spike advertised it on UFC 69 and all this week. They still are showing the show. I’m just saying that there will not be an actual boxing match between Tito and Dana at the end of it. Its probably just going to be a bunch of nonsense clips about their “bad blood” and all the training that Dana went through to get ready.

    Pretty stupid.

  4. bvrasp says:

    LOL are you serious? Dana vs Tito didnt happen and theyre still advertising it?? dam how *** is THAT?

    Dana says no way…..from MMAweekly

    “White also contradicted statements made just in the past week by DSE executives about Pride’s upcoming Lightweight Grand Prix. When asked if it’s true that there will be one or more UFC fighters in the Pride Lightweight Grand Prix, White said that it is absolutely not true. “

  11. Dennis says:

    Man, lots of good stuff in that interview with Dana..

    No Shogun, Wandy, or Fedor in UFC, and Trigg will not be announcer.

    Sorry Doc, but this is real juice here…

    @Dennis
    Read the article this morning, Dana has backtracked on previous comments before. The other thing you have to look at in his comments in that article are that he said with regard to Pride fighters coming to the UFC: “there will be no Pride fighters in the UFC before the big UFC vs. Pride “Super Bowl” event”.. in other words it’s going to happen but not until AFTER the “Superbowl of MMA”. So I am looking to see fighters like Shogun, Wand, and Fedor in the UFC, but not until after the “Superbowl” ect. Look at Monson, he is in Pride, and was just fighting in the UFC a couple months ago..

    funny……I thought Serra was LOENITUS!

    No wait….Ross “the Gladiator” Pointon! LMFAO…
