Mike SwickSam Caplan, who covers MMA for CBS Sportsline, has an “exclusive” statement today on his personal MMA Site from Mike Swick.

In an exclusive statement to FiveOuncesOfPain.com, Mike Swick responded to a question we submitted to him about comments made by Joe Rogan during the UFC 70 telecast about Swick possibly being a better fit in the welterweight division (170 lbs.).

Here’s Swick’s response to us:

“I plan to fight my next fight at 170. I came in lighter than ever for this one and I think it’s best to drop.”

Speculation has been high since Swick’s defeat at UFC 69 against Yushin Okami about the option of moving from middleweight to welterweight. Swick was easily out-sized and out-muscled in at UFC 69 and you could hear him express his frustration between rounds as he stated “he’s just so strong” (referring to Okami). Swick will now drop to the 170 lbs weight class and join and already packed, star-studded group of fighters in what might be the UFC’s deepest division as far as talent. The question also arises of Swicks fellow American Kickboxing Academy teammates Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch who also fight at welterweight. Will any of these AKA teammates fight each other? It appears they may now have to.

    I had a Brazilian Black Belt in capoeira challenge my kickboxing skills about 7 months ago, he did it right in front of my wife and students. He was freaking awesome, so I understand why he was cocky, but he was playing into my game, I am a Brown Belt in BJJ and a Black Belt in Muay Thai, at first he was spinning around and kicking me pretty good, and he was fast and very strong, so I rushed in at him full speed and ran him into a wall, without being able to work his half moon he couldn’t do anything, I took him down on the ground and submitted him in less than 30 sec. The guy was so proud, he looked pretty fighting, until he got taken down.. Brazilians are by nature very cocky when they are good at something.

  4. MMAKansas says:

    Yeah my wife is hot, typical Brazilian woman, nice butt, long hair, slim figure.. ect

    @Pat
    I think that Werdum dived in after the Pitbull and missed so he spun around on his back hoping to bait Andrei in.. Andrei wouldnt bite and that happened 2 or 3 times..

  5. richard says:

    what is capoeira

    @DrJ
    Would you like to give the dictionary definition doc?

  7. MMAKansas says:

    @Richard
    Copy and paste the word into Youtube and check it out on video, it’s pretty neat to watch.

  8. richard says:

    alright i see what it is now do they do those crazy kicks when they fight or is that just for show

  9. MMAKansas says:

    They do that stuff. not a ton of the flips but they do it, and this guy was freakin spectacular, he was a Black Belt, he grew up in Rio and he was raise in the “hood”. When he was in his teens, his instructor made him wear ankle weights strapped to his ankles with duct tape for 4 weeks. That’s how they get good at flipping and kicking like that.. crazy..

  10. richard says:

    ive seen it before i never that it was a martial art though

  11. MMAKansas says:

    Yeah,
    its a kind of a dance and a martial art. It originated in Africa, and the Africans brought it to Brazil when they immigrated with the French in the North of the country about 260 years ago. It spread gradually until people began relating it to “Brazilian Culture”, but it’s really an African art.

  12. bvrasp says:

    yea my cousin does capoeira, its great for conditioning man, he taught me some of the basic moves, stances. In terms of being a martial art, you have to be AMAZING in order for it to be effective, but its fun to “play” and again.. great for conditioning

  13. MMAKansas says:

    Yeah, I know what you mean, if you are mediocre, you will get your butt kicked…

    But even a great Capoiera fighter will lose if you pin them into a wall, corner, or on the ground..

  14. bvrasp says:

    @Kansas

    yea bro, its not a style you can use in close quarters, like in a club or something. Theres no ground game to it at all either, but on the positive side, it probably has the most powerful strikes of any other system the way you throw your body weight around. It looks cool too! hehe, i would recommend anyone to learn Capoeira, try “playing” with a friend for about 5 min or so, you will be exhausted! lol, or even better, play on the beach hehe man, that kills me!

  15. R.J. St.Croix says:

    i read somewhere that Capoeira was invented because at the time fighting of any sort was banned in that part of the world so they created Capoeira so that underground fighter could stay in fight ready shape and not get cought. if this is true then Capoeira is more of a training tool then a fight style and thats why its not applied well to a street fight situation whereas something like muay thai would work much better. i have been in to a lot of street fights and school yard brawls and i found muay thai like styles come out very naturally to an untrained fighter (using knees and elbows when close and punches and kicks outside) big crazy kicks and spinning back fist are not thing people just try in a bar fight.
