Mauricio Shogun Rua

The following statement appeared on the Chutebox US website this morning:

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has signed a contract with the UFC and may participate in UFC 72.

Previously we had heard rumors that Shogun had signed some sort of four-fight deal with UFC/PrideFC that would have him fight 2 fights in each organization. Of course, the PrideFC purchase still has not been completed so there is no confirmation if that is true. But it appears that Shogun has been inked to the UFC and hopefully will add some life to the lackluster UFC 72 fight card.

This is very exciting news, of course, and as far as I can tell no other sites have reported this info yet (other than the Chuteboxe USA site). So, as more info starts to trickle out, I’ll post it here.

Also of interest:

Evan Tanner is back in Los Angeles with Coach Roberto Piccinini. He is determined to take back the UFC title from Anderson Silva and will be fighting under the Chute Boxe USA banner.

Evan Tanner recently posted on his personal website that he had sold his house and most of his posessions and was heading “south” to train again in hopes of regaining the UFC Middleweight title. Looks like he has joined a great team.

Light slowly fades and the day colors give way to the somber hues of dusk. Empty miles of quiet desert pass outside the windows, Jimmy Hendrix “Purple Haze” in the background. This beat up old van limps down the road, rocking and swaying under it’s heavy load, the engine straining, all that I own in the back.

This empty landscape rolls beautiful beneath the lavender sky of the coming night. I think of the peace of this moment, the clouds, the colors, the deserted road stretching to the horizon, and I contemplate it’s stark contrast to the place where this road is taking me, the bright lights, the roaring crowds of Vegas, and the middleweight title.

    DOC

WHAT WEIGHT CLASS IS RUA IN …. AND WHERE DO U THINK TITO WILL GO AFTER HE LOSES TO RASHAD?

  3. MMAKansas says:

Finally a Chuteboxe fighter in the UFC for a considerable time and for a fight that is upcoming! I hope this is true.. if it is you can count on Wand staying in Pride to take back the 205 next year and Shogun holding the UFC 205 .. maybe this year. . whooo hooo!

SHOGUN.. LHW.. 205lb …. future champion in the UFC ..

  6. Dr J says:

    @PATRICK,

Shogun will most likely fight at 205 in the UFC, that is his natural weightclass. He fought all over in PrideFC because he trains with Wanderlei Silva, who at the time of course, was the PrideFC 205 champ. In the UFC, I think we’d see Shogun at 205 and fighting Rampage or Liddell pretty quickly.

As for Tito, I have no idea. I think it would be a smart move to send him to Pride if the deal ever gets finalized. He could help promote PrideFC to the US audience and get sort of a “fresh start” over there.

  7. todd says:

yes finally it has begun!! Now we will really see who is the best!!!!! In one of the best weight classes

  8. MMAKansas says:

Did I mention Chutboxe fighter? .. oh sorry, yeah he is.. and so is Wand, and so is Evan Tanner now, and so is Cyborg, and so how many fighters besides Chuck liddell do you know from his camp, or from team punishment? Team Miletech and Team Quest are the only teams that have more than one recognizable name in MMA, aside from Gracie which that name alone is famous, no other name needed in front of it .. lol.. I don’t hear much about other teams with multiple champions or multiple fighters with worldwide recognition..

  9. PATRICK says:

    LOL KANSAS

    WHAT ABOUT TEAM PITBULL LOL

  10. MMAKansas says:

    @PAT

team Pitbull has sucked over the last year … and I know one fighter from that team .. lol .. your fav ..

  11. bvrasp says:

hehe Kansas, i think you left out american topteam and brazilian topteam.. im SURE you know about them heh

  12. MMAKansas says:

Yeah.. Brazilian top team for sure, never paid much attention to American top team .. but yeah.. can’t forget those guys ..

  13. PATRICK says:

WHAT IS IT WITH CANADIANS SAYING HEH

  14. todd says:

Hey guys did anyone see that fight with wanderlei silva and Dilson Filho? That was a war!!!! That was a great fight. I guess it was supposed to be wandy’s “first”fight

  15. Amir says:

wow, this is too much to handle at once. I agree with Dr. J that sending Titty Ortiz to Japan would be a good idea from a marketing standpoint, since they eat up that type of flashy personality there. However, we all know that dealing with Titty is always a pain in the ***. Rua in the UFC, man…where to begin. I wonder how he will handle a cage, I hope he trains for it, unlike some Croatian dudes. He shouldn’t have a problem dominating in no time!!! run Tito run!!!

  16. MMAKansas says:

    @Amir

I have trademarked the “Titty” Ortiz thing .. so you got to req. permission because I copy righted it. Other thing, Chuteboxe has an Octagon in their training facility, they have been sparring in it for over 4 months now, so yeah, I think Shogun has been preparing..

Just kidding about Taco Bell Ortiz ..

  17. MMAKansas says:

Tito has nothing on the top brass in the 205. He barely made it past Forrest, and if they have a rematch in 6 months, I think Forrest might whip him. Fact is, Tito has lost his hunger and drive. He wants to be in movies, and market clothing, not fight.. he is wasting everyone’s time ..

This is where MMAK and I are definately on the same page…..

if liddel where to win on saturday i can see him and rua by the end of the year.FU*CK 2008 RUA 2007

ive always been partial to ***-o or-tits…

  21. I’ve had a pretty good run at late with “predictions”, so allow me to predict this….

Rampage’s first title defense will be against Keith Jardine…not Rua.

    ….

    ….

    ….

And this is coming from a huge Liddell nutrider. I want Chuck to beat Rampage badly and I’ve never been all that impressed with Jackson. However, I think Rampage is going to be jacked up on Saturday and will pull out a decision.

  22. todd says:

yea i had it going to the scorecards to but i had it going chucks way. I think chuck is well aware of rampage power THIS time around and he will avoid it like he did against cotoure in their second fight. I think rampages aggression level is the same as any of chucks opponents, but the only difference is the STRIKING that may pose to be a little different than chuck has fought. But IF chuck doesnt catch him early i think it will go to the scorecards and chuck pulls it out. But if rampage can manage to dictate the fight THEN i have it goin to rampage, but that is a big if to me mainly because hackleman is such a good strategist i dont think history will repeat itself this weekend!!!

  23. todd says:

BUT……….I do believe rampage has the best chance to beat chuck because of the mental state he is already in and knowing he already beat chuck. any one else i believe chuck will run thru if they are fighters from the ufc. A fighter like shogun rua i think will be a good fight for chuck, but i think it should be keith jardine-rashad evans-michael bisping-rua, but if dana wants to put rua in there jardine or bispings, or rashad evans should fight for the right to face winner of chuck-liddell.

    So basically
    SHOGUN VS RASHAD
    JARDINE VS BISBING

Then winner of this little pool should fight winner chuck-rampage for the title

  24. MMAKansas says:

Predictions boys? C’mon we are a few days away.. hours away from the most exciting ppv fight in months. .

  25. PATRICK says:

    MAN THIS CARD SUCKS

  26. MMAKansas says:

    @Patrick

C’mon man… PREDICTIONS not complaints, send your complaints to Zuffa Inc. .. lol! .. all we have done at this blog for the past 5 months is complain about how bad the cards suck, mostly due to the Pitbull’s lack of aggression! (I AM SO KIDDING PATRICK!)

Chin up, we are going to get Liddell Rampage 2 .. that alone is worth it..

  27. richard says:

    RAMPAGE TKO BY TOWEL LOL
    BURKMAN DECISION
    SALAVERRY SUBMISSION

  28. Dennis says:

LOL, quint will NEVER hold any belt, except MAYBE to polish it for the ICEMAN….

    here’s a prediction for you……..quint swallows!

  29. richard says:

LOL thats some funny sh*it but answer my ? if chuck were to lose then would u give rampage some respect?

  30. jake says:

well i am a big chuck fan and it sucked to see him lose, especially when the stoppage was after 4 shots. did anyone see the yushin okami -swick fight, or the chuck and tito fight??? swick got pounded and they didnt stop it, titty boy got pounded and they gave him way more time. rampage will be a great champion(LOL), until he has to defend his title against a much more skilled dan henderson, he does have some impressive victories under him. then when shogun comes in i feel bad for anyone stepping in with him at the top of his game. heck he is so young and still developing not to mention he beat rampage so bad that he doesnt want to talk about it in interviews. houston alexander was the most impressive sat. nite, he murdered jardine and made him eat his words after he knocked that mouthpeice out.

  31. Dennis says:

Houston Rocked Jardine!………AWESOME! “HE totally impressed me, even more than when Silva beat Leben!

EVEN BETTER!////……..Hollywood will have all three belts!

What a grand time we live in…..
