Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

If you missed last nights co-promotion between EliteXC and Strikeforce, then I feel bad for you. I’ve been telling you for weeks to buy this PPV and if you didn’t, thats your problem. For those of us with half a brain that bought the card, we were treated to one of the best events in a while.

  • Frank Shamrock vs Phil Baroni – I don’t really know how to express how disappointed I am with the end result of last nights main event, almost tetering on the verge of depression. The only difference between disappointment and depression is your level of committment and while I was whole-heartedly rooting for Phil Baroni to put Frank Shamrock in a coffin, realistically I knew Frank would most likely win the fight. Either way this fight was EXCELLENT. From first second of the fight until Phil went to sleep in the second round, there is no denying that this was the type of fight that we all hope every main event will be.
  • Cung Le vs Tony Fryklund – Cung Le looked spectacular last night. He looked like some kind of kickboxing technician (which I guess he is in a way) and it was awesome watching him just pick his spots and dominate this fight. Why Fryklund chose to stand and try to trade blows with Le, I’ll never know, but I’m glad he did because we saw something special in that fight. Give him another few fights and Cung Le could be ready for the big time.
  • Murilo Rua vs Joey Villaseneor – Ninja Rua looked on top of his game last night and I think we are all glad that he was cleared by the California State Athletic Commission and allowed to fight.
  • It’s too bad that Josh Thomson isn’t in the UFC because I think he would easily be the champ at 155. Don’t agree with me, that’s fine, but that’s what I think. Thomson is, in my opinion, top 5 in the world at 155 and I wish we could see him fight some of the top UFC and PrideFC guys and see where he stands.
  • Its nice to see a fight card where every single fight ends in some kind of stoppage and doesn’t go to a judges scorecard.
  • As much as I loved last nights PPV, I must say I much prefer the way the UFC does their fighter entrances more in the traditional “boxing” style instead of the WWE or PrideFC “fireworks, glitz and glamour” style. I know the UFC used to do the same type of entrances, but I’m glad they moved away from them. I don’t think we need to see Richie Rich Boy or whatever his name was wrapping before a fighter comes out.
  • Did anyone else find it a little confusing that Shamrock and Baroni fought for the Strikeforce middleweight belt while Murilo Rua and Joey Villaseneor fought for the EliteXC middleweight title. I mean, I knew the difference, but I don’t think the casual fan would have picked up on it considering they didn’t really differentiate which fights were Strikeforce fights and which fights were EliteXC fights. Then again, the “casual fan” probably didn’t buy this PPV in the first place, so they wouldn’t really care.
  • I found it funny how Jay Glazer and Bill Goldberg kept taking personal, sarcastic verbal jabs at each other all night. It seemed like Glazer was trying his hardest to keep Goldberg from saying something totally stupid, and Goldberg didn’t like being talked over. And don’t get me started on Mauro and his borderline idiotic catch-phrases and analogies.

If tonights TUF 5 finale is half as good as last nights show, I’ll be happy.

So Doc.. Even though you hate Frank Shamrock (and rightly so) would you give him respect for the way he stood up with Baroni? Kick azzz fight man!

Cung Le put on a striking clinic man! Hes a smart fighter man! the way he mixed up his attacks, punches and kick, changed heights low kick high, kick, mid kick, from both sides, side kicks, front ball kicks, Crescent, reverse crescent, spinning heel kicks, hook kicks.. man oh man! I had no idea what was coming next! let alone Tony!

Villasenor vs Ninja was a great fight too!! dont sleep on Villaseneor man! that fight could have gone either way in my opinion! great job by both guys! what i found annoying was how one of the commentators kept calling him Shogun.. who are these dumb *** commentators??? Fans shouldnt know more about the fighters than the commentators.. or else what are these clowns getting paid for??

This WAS a kick azz event.. 30min left till BJ vs Jens and im frothing at the mouth hehe

    GO JENS!

  2. Amir says:

I didn’t notice them calling him “Shogun”…lol…that’s pretty pathetic.
I will say that it was a hell of a fight card. Very glad I ordered it. Any time I get to see Baroni get his *** destroyed is a good day for me. He is the stereotypical idiot that many people in NY hate. Dr. J do you like Phil Baroni or just hate Shamrock with a passion? because Baroni talks just as much **** as Shamrock does. I will say that even though I’ve never liked Baroni as a person, I have been very entertained by watching him fight, kind of like a Mike Tyson..who might say or do anything controversial at any time.

Did anyone else think Carter Williams looks incredibly overweight? What is he thinking? he was one of the hottest rising fighters in K-1 when he was in shape…now he looks obese.

  3. Dr J says:

    @Amir

I don’t really like Phil Baroni much at all. He’s pretty much a big tool himself. I just completely despise Frank shamrock

    @BV

I definitely give Frank much respect for the performance he gave last night. I don’t really buy all the word about his knee injury considering he was throwing kicks fine and you could see neither of his knees were taped up when his kneepads rolled down. But either way he put on a great performance and showed the high skill level he has always claimed he never lost.

  4. Jason Gatties says:

Someone with a quarter of a brain uses Friday night to get laid…

  5. bvrasp says:

Im gonna log that comment Jason, only a politician would say something llike that lol! some of us are married bro hehe

  6. richard says:

i liked this card but i missed the paul buentello fights im telling u guys this guy can strike with anyone in the world but he just got caught in the arlovski fight

  7. Soups says:

A lot of great fights, for sure. Nicely paced action.

Jay Glazer, the best of the 3 announcers, accidentally called “Ninja” Shogun instead… it was right at the end of round one, and he was trying to speak quickly before the replays started. It happened once, the entire fight. Chill out, man.

  8. richard says:

i like the commentators i like it best when goldberg seen shlong

  9. PATRICK says:

    EVERYONE

PENN SUCKS… LAUZON SUCK…. DIAZ SUCKS… MANNY SUCKS….AND ELVIS SINOSECK IS THE MAN..

LOL KIDDIN RJ…. PENN AWESOME PERFORMANCE… JOE KICKS *** THAT BOY WILL CONTINUE TO WIN…. MANNY DIAZ FIGHT SUCKS FOR MANNY HE WAS BEATING THE **** OUTA DIAZ…

GREAT NIGHT OF FIGHTS….. AND GRAY IS SO FULL OF ****…. WHAT A JACKASS

  10. Soups says:

Actually, Manny wasn’t “beating the sh*t” out of Diaz. Just because a fighter on top, doesn’t mean he’s beating a guy, especially when the guy on the bottom is a BJJ expert. With Nate’s skills, that fight could have ended at any moment.

So despite Manny’s 1st round “dominance,” it was really still anyone’s fight.

  11. R.J. St.Croix says:

holey Doc there is just way too much sh*t going on right now. there was three different cards on this weekend worth mentioning and that was just this weekend and it doesnt seem like its slowing down much. i will try to come up with a story or two and send them to you to help you out a bit if you want.

  12. Ozzy says:

What did you guys think of the commentating? The fights were great but Goldberg and company were horrible.

  13. Amir says:

    @ Ozzy,

I think the fights were pretty damn good and only going ot get better because Elite knows the only way they can compete and even sometimes beat the UFC is to actually give the fans what they want, great fighters with great fighters…which I can’t always say for the UFC. It seems like they have their own agenda sometimes which causes the hype to beat out the actual performance.

  14. richard says:

ufc is all about selling there fights and to me showtime is just trying to give us good fights watch

  15. Amir says:

true… the UFC has become a marketing machine. This brings up a point I actually wanted to discuss with Dr. J about fighter payouts…which is one the main reasons Frank Shamrock hates Dana White and the UFC. I personally never had much of an opinion about the subject but now it is becoming more and more apparent that other up-and-coming promotions are paying big name fighters more money and actually LETTING THEM FIGHT. Where as, the UFC is spending much of their concentration on their reality shows. What does this mean for us as fans? it means that we could watch the old Pride and see CroCop vs. Fedor or Shogun vs. Rampage OR we CAN watch the UFC and get Andy Wang. There ya go.

  16. richard says:

    amir
    u put it best

  17. Amir says:

Thanks Richard, I hope that a majority of fans feel the same way and speak up more about the subject. I, like many, get so excited about a headline like “Fedor to the UFC” but then I start to think, ok..so Fedor signs a contract, then spends months going through licensing exams and physicals to get approval to fight, and then maybe we get to actually see him fight within 6 months or so, against some no name…and within that time period…the heavyweight landscape changes so much that we don’t even get to see him fight who we want to see him fight.

I think that with all of the upsets in recent months, the UFC needs to re-establish a legitimate, consistent champion…which will only help the sport as a whole in promoting a “poster boy” ex. Chuck, Huerta. For that to happen, they need to start sorting through all those B and C level fighters (mainly from TUF) and stop filling up BS PPVs with them. it used to be that good fighters had to prove themselves in the smaller shows before getting to the UFC. Even though that still happens now and again, TUF guys get on the show, make some drama and now they are actors/fighters.

  18. richard says:

i personally like the tuf series but i have to admit a lot of these guys suck and i mean suck in a good way there good but not 40 dollar ppv fight good ultimate fight night good yes but ppv’s no patrick cote has lost and lost and lost and lost in the ufc then wins one by decision but on the other hand they a guy loses one fight and hes gone

  19. MattyB says:

I have question, and i cant find the answer anywhere. What happened to Krazy horse? i heard he got arrested a week or so before the show, but i also heard he had gotten out and was still going to fight. i really wanted to see him fight.

  20. bvrasp says:

mattyb, ya they bailed him out, but they got stuck in traffic on the way to the airport and missed the flight, so he didnt make it to the weigh-ins. If you dont weigh in, you dont fight.

  21. richard says:

    bvrasp
thanks for clearing that up for me to

  22. MattyB says:

alright, thanks man. that was a quick as hell response

  23. bvrasp says:

im still waiting for Joe Daddys next fight, that guys gonna be the Lightweight champ one of these days.. He really put the hurt on Yves Edwards, my buddys favorite fighter. Imagine Joe Daddy vs Sherk, ya it would be a ground match, but really, i wanna see which one of those guys has more power. Plus Joe is more of a finisher, nasty elbows, i dunno why sherk doesnt throw more bows..

  24. R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah i wanna see Stevenson fight Shirk that would cool as hell

  25. richard says:

but has any one seen the sherk vs franca promo franca says that shirk aint got that much expierence WTF

  26. R.J. St.Croix says:

maybe he has been hanging out with Diaz and Sanchez lol he does have some wacky hair lol.

  27. richard says:

i also want to see tito get knocked out but u know would also be awesome if rashad lost i honestly think titos the underdog here

  28. bvrasp says:

I hope franca wins, hes been in the game forever, but for some reason i cant see him connecting and hes definately not winning the ground war.

  29. richard says:

    NICK DIAZ NEWS
on the rumors page he will be fighting on strikeforce in september

  30. R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah i hear the Diaz thing i hope its true. i know it means nothing but the vegas odds have Evans the underdog at just over 2 to 1

  31. R.J. St.Croix says:

did anyone else get to see the kimbo vs. mercer fight?

  32. bvrasp says:

ya rashaad will definately be the underdog on the betting. Good time to place a bet hehe.

  33. richard says:

    rj
i didnt order it but i seen it on the internet i was surprised that he didnt stand but from what i hear hes working with couture and rutten or was working with

  34. R.J. St.Croix says:

    @Richard
yeah i was kinda impressed with Kimbo i figure with some work he might be pretty good.

    @B.V.
i dont know if i would put money on Ortiz vs. Evans its kinda a coin flip match.

  35. richard says:

like bvrasp cant see franca connecting or winning the ground game i cant picture a way evans can lose

  36. MattyB says:

I want ortiz to lose, but its kinda iffy. they both seem like they have the same power, ortiz might be better on the ground. i think this one will be decided by a knockout

  37. bvrasp says:

i think Rashaad is hungier, hes improving and Tito carreer seems to be winding down. For all he says about Ken Shamrock being a dinosaur, Tito is getting pretty obsolete in the game these days too. Hes not well rounded enough to be a top fighter anymore, everyone knows his gameplan, everyone knows what he can and cant do. Rashaad has the advantage of the fact that hes still a bit of an anomaly, were not sure what new tricks hes learned, especially working with Greg Jackson.. Titos has reached his peak i think, in terms of skill and conditioning, it seems like hes just maintaining what he already has going for him..

  38. bvrasp says:

you guys see the all access with sherk? dam, that guys an animal! Hermes is gonna have to do something amazing to win this fight. Maybe a flying knee during a shoot? hehe

  39. MattyB says:

nah, i missed it. i’m kinda drunkie. ortiz is on the down side of his career. i love it. how long you think its going to be till franklin has his title fight? its going to be in cincy, and thats where im at. i’m stoked already.

  40. richard says:

franklin is NEVER going to get his title back sorry mattyb

  41. R.J. St.Croix says:

as long as Anderson has the title Franklin will have a hard time taking it back. i do think Tito is falling behind and wont be anywhere near top ten soon, but i also think his style matches well against Evans and at 10-0-0 you gotta lose sometime and this is probably Rashad toughest fight yet.

  42. MattyB says:

i dont know, maybe the motivation of fighting in his hometown might give him a little extra. its worth a shot.

  43. richard says:

why doesnt try to go back to 185 if he loses?

  44. R.J. St.Croix says:

i dont think Tito ever fought at 185lbs.

  45. bvrasp says:

no Tito never fought at 185, but your right RJ this is definately Rashaads biggest test. I was watching UFC 63 today the BJ vs Hughes 2, and rashsaad was fighting jason Lambert. He had a tough time with that guy, but he out wrestled him, i think hes about even with Tito in wrestling, so thats why i think Rashaad will win by KO. As we all know Tito cant strike for his life except G&P. Rashaad by KO baby! bear in mind its the year of the underdogs hehe
