Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

Postive drug tests continue to sweep over the MMA landscape much like the AIDS crisis is currently ravaging the content of Africa.

Today, the California State Athletic Commission reveals that UFC Lightweight champion Sean Sherk has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite, a banned substance.

Sean Sherk, the reigning UFC World Lightweight Champion, who last competed on July 7, 2007 in Sacramento, has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite. He has been fined $2,500. His suspension period runs from the conclusion of his bout on July 7, 2007 through the remainder of his licensing year which is June 26, 2008. Furthermore, he has been assessed an additional 10 days in order to fulfill the terms of his suspension (365 total days). The additional days will be added at the beginning of his next licensing year when he reapplies.

Normal levels of Nandrolone range from 2 ng/mL (average person) to 6 ng/mL (athlete engaged in rigorous activity). Mr. Sherk’s reported level certified by the Director of Science and Technology from the laboratory that conducted the tests was 12 ng/mL. Both the “A” sample and “B” sample were tested and confirmed as positive.

Not only did Sean Sherk test positive, but his opponent at UFC 73 Hermes Franca tested positive for Drostanolone and was fined $2,500 and suspended for a year as well. When is the last time both fighters in a matchup tested positive for banned substances?

This is getting WAY out of hand and something needs to change abruptly or the sport of MMA will die before it even gets out of the gate. Damon Martin at MMAWeekly.com wrote a very good article on the growing drug problem in Mixed Martial Arts and I encourage you all to check it out.

Zach Arnold at FightOpinion.com also notes the figures recently released by the CSAC which noted 20 failed drug tests by MMA athletes over the past 3 months.

The California State Athletic Commission released the latest drug test-related suspension figures from the time period of 3/31/2007 to 7/6/2007. Within that three month time-span, there were 28 failed drug tests – 20 of them in MMA plus Johnnie Morton refusing to take a test (MMA testing over a period of 17 events), 5 in boxing (over a period of 28 events), and 2 in kickboxing.

Do the math – that means 5 out of every 7 drug test failures in California were related to MMA, or a little over 70%. If you count Morton’s refusal to take a drug test as a testing failure (which naturally you should), then the ratio would hit 3 out of every 4 (21/28) drug test failures (75%).

What happens now? We can’t turn a blind eye to this problem and continue to not treat it as a serious problem. What will the UFC do with Sherk being the lightweight title holder? Do they strip him of the title like they did to Tim Syliva when he tested positive while heavyweight champion. If they don’t, in my mind it will be an absolute travesty and the UFC should be ashamed of themselves to no end. This is the UFC’s chance, on a grand scale, to publically step forward and state their position on the issue of banned substances.

    i dont think forrest is going anywhere when he loses i dont see a chance for forrest i really dont

  2. bvrasp says:

    LOL houston alexander?? nah man.. that guy would be a good matchu for Eastman.. but NOT shogun! Shogun would hurt that guy bad, very quickly. Just cuz he KOed Jardine.. doesnt mean hes any good. From what i saw of his mechanics and strategy, he aint sht man, he had a punchers chance even to beat jardine and he connected while Jardine was clumsily trying to get a thai clinch. Then Houston just went right hand crazy and wooped Jardine..

    That would never happen with Shogun, he wouldnt land that lucky shot, because Shogun doesnt make stupid mistakes like that.

  3. Amir says:

    @Richard,

    Please explain how I don’t know what I’m talking about, since you obviously ALWAYS know what your talking about, when it’s even coherent english.

  4. richard says:

    Amir
    i always know what im talking about,u said joe stevenson is a boring fighter,how u figure ?

  5. Amir says:

    He’s boring in that he’s another wrestler who learned some BJJ. All we need now is to see him vs. Sherk to completely bore the fans out of their minds. I hate grapplers and always prefer strikers, which he is not. From an excitment standpoint, I get sick of watching takedown after takedown and tons of smothering.

  6. richard says:

    joe daddy doesnt just lay on people he finishes fights and his last fights havent been boring

  7. Amir says:

    I guess that’s a matter of opinion…

  8. PATRICK says:

    EVERYFIGHTER SUCKS…..

    THAT TAKES JUICE

  9. MMAKansas says:

    @Rich and @Amir

    To jump in on your post about Joe Stevenson… I haven’t’ seen his MOST recent fight, but to say the least, I have never found him THAT exciting, I would like to see him fight a mega striker, or someone like Penn, that would be fun to watch..

    @Amir
    The only time Rich types b.s. is when he is drunk out of his mind… lol kidding guys.. but yeah, Rich you have come online late at night and posted some funny crap man, while you were toasted… like rofl stuff.

  10. bvrasp says:

    dam, i dunno what you guys find exciting, but im always excited to see Joe Daddy fight. After what he did to Yves Edwards i was really impressed! Then when he fought Melvin, who is a pretty good striker, he came through like a champ. I dont think a striker would have much chance at beating him. Hes big and muscled, i think a smaller more agile BJJ specialist could beat him at his own game.

  11. MMAKansas says:

    @BV

    hmm did someone say BJ PENN?!?!

  12. bvrasp says:

    @Kansas

    Ya i think BJ is the nemesis of guys like Joe daddy and Sherk, the only other guy who could beat them would be an even bigger stronger wrestler.. GSP managed to do a good job with Hughes, but i think Hughes ego helped to get him beat also. In general i think its hard for a striker to beat a strong wrestler.

  13. PATRICK says:

    BJ PENN BLOWS… HES GOOD BUT I DONT LIKE HIM I WOULDNT WANT HIM TO BE THE POSTER BOY FOR THE LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION… GO NATE DIAZ…

  14. MMAKansas says:

    Nate Diaz? You are calling BJ a punk Pat? NATE IS A PUNK man look at his attitude.. BJ IS A FORMER CHAMPION not a Punk, you don’t have go hating on everyone… of course with you EVERYONE BLOWS AT SOME POINT OR ANOTHER! LOL!

  15. richard says:

    but if u really think about it bj penn is a good striker even though he lost to gsp he fu*cked him up good

  16. PATRICK says:

    LOL KANSAS

    CHILL OUT DUDE EVERYONE DOES NOT SUCK…. CHILL I STILL THINK WANDI IS GOOD… FOR NOW…. I DONT KNOW I WISH SHERK WOULD STAY AS CHAMP…

  17. MMAKansas says:

    Has the UFC officially stripped Shawn Sherk of his title yet guys?

  18. bvrasp says:

    I like Nate Diaz, hes coming along beautifully! tho i dont think hes got enough experience yet.. and hes definately not beed really tested yet. His biggest test so far was Gray Maynard who i picked to win tuf, he came through like a warrior and came back to win that fight, he earned alot of respect in my book for that.

    Though he is NOWHERE near BJ hehe not even close.

    His bro Nick is a good fighter man! especially after that win over Gomi. Though i was disappointed with Gomis conditioning, Nick still gained alot of respect for that win, after getting rocked in the 1st and coming back like he did!

    The Diaz brothers are pretty hard man! now imagine if Gaspar Gomez got into mma LOL… (scarface, incase anyone didnt know)

  19. bvrasp says:

    @Kansas

    They havent revealed if Sherk will be stripped of the title or not.. i think he should be.. also from everything ive read on the net, EVERYONE thinks he should lose the belt. Ive yet to hear a good argument supporting Sherk on this matter. Not like its the first time this happened to a champ, and a UFC champ has never tested positive and Kept his title. Judging by the histor, i cant see Sherk being the champ, and considering his fighting style and all the new talent at 155, he will probably never be the UFC champ again.

  20. bvrasp says:

    @Richard

    Very good point! BJ is a good striker, everytime i think BJ penn striking, i think back to his fight with Caol Uno LOL. That fight was nuts man, BJ put him down so fast, then… theres no other way to describe it other than to say, He threw a beat down to Unos face against the cage. Then BJ ran back to the locker room LOL no comment or nothing! ahahah that is hilarious!

    BJ is a very well rounded fighter, striking, grappling, power in his arms and legs, strong hips, great chin, great heart, high skill level, alot of experience… the only place he ever came short was conditioning, i REALLY hope BJs conditioning keeps improving. Imagine he was at the conditioning level of Sherk?? he would be unbeatable man!

  21. richard says:

    sherk is saying that since he trains heck of hard that his body produces that drug more naturally, i guess nate marquardt tested like this before and it was overturned so sherks might to

  22. bvrasp says:

    i mean.. im not a chemist or anything.. but theres a chance that Sherk was ingesting something organic that contains or stimulates the production of that metabolite, but drugs dont appear out of thin air, theyre all naturally occuring in plants, roots, etc.. Then theyre purified, refined or concentrated. Like if he was eating incredible amounts of poppy seeds, it could show up as opium in a test. Same principle i guess.

    Ofcourse Sherk could justbe talking out his azzz and he just wasnt able to cover it, or they just started testing for it, or who knows what. Only Sherk and his trainers know if it was a malicious use of performance enhancing substances, or an innocent mistake.

  23. richard says:

    im just saying that maybe i jumped the gun a little and im gonna give him the benefit of the doubt

  24. R.J. St.Croix says:

    i was doing a little research on the whole steroid thing because i know just about nothing when it comes to steroids and there use. from what i gather its unlikely that Sherk had a false positive and i base that on how he claims to live his life (healthy eating, clean lifestyle) you can have a false test by eating large amounts of beef from cows injected with roids but i doubt he is buying roided up beef from the organic food store lol. you can also test positive after the treatment of cold sores lol Sean “The Herpies Shark” Sherk lol. all i know is if he doesnt prove that hes innocent they should take his title and make him work his way back up the ranks. that otta learn em!

  25. bvrasp says:

    hahaha dam! that doesnt mesh too well with his other nickname.. now hes Sean “Herpes Man-Love” Sherk.. Dam his image is taking a battering! and thats just us!and we dont even matter, imagine the rest of the mma community.

    You reallyed screwd the pooch this time Sharky

  26. Amir says:

    @Dr. J,

    Is anything going on with this website? cause it’s really starting to stagnate with the same story running for days and days, and then we get bombarded with 3 news stories at a time? a while back I used to check in every day and see a brand new topic that I couldn’t find anywhere else…I was just curious if there’s something else taking up your time? I know it’s a lot fo work running an entire website but I would prefer to get my MMA news only here.

  27. bvrasp says:

    @Amir

    Personally i like mmaweekly for latest news , but thats just reading up on it. Here is where i talk to other people about stuff..

    Heres something you might be interested in.. Nick Diaz will be fighting on september 15 for EliteXC.. He called out Frank Shamrock hehe but thats not happening, so they havent announced who he will be fighting yet, but it will be at 160.

  28. todd says:

    yea i usally go look at the other sites and then bring stuff back here to talk about!!!!lol lol, its better talking to you guys on here, it seems like on here that everyone is open minded about everything, i read some other threads on the other sites and some people are completely opposite

  29. todd says:

    doc u almost finished with those rankings yet?

  30. Amir says:

    @bvrasp,

    Yeah man, we don’t agree often…but I agree with you here…we definitely are in good company here. I don’t usually like to go to other places. It’s just that when I started coming to this site a while back, there was something new to talk about every day and lately it’s died down a lot for some reason…but unlike certain pro sports that have offseasons and not much news…MMA is year long so there has to be new stuff out there reported on almost every day. It’s better to have one new story per day then bombarded with 3 similar topics at once. Also, as we have seen…many things are posted and then reported false just minutes later.

  31. bvrasp says:

    @Amir

    Yea i hear you, maybe its because we had so many back to back events lately, and now we hit a bit of a slump until the next UFC. Theres still news out there, but more about fighters who we dont really care about. Plus with pride not making any announcements or arranging any events, that cuts back on alot of the activity were used to. Maybe Dr. J has been busy too hehe, im sure hes not making any money off this site, i see he uses some google adwords, bt thats probably just to pay for the hosting the site and all that.

  32. Dr J says:

    @Todd and everyone,

    I’m still working on the rankings. Sorry for the slowdown here on MMA HQ the last few days. My wife just gave birth to our first child last Friday so I was at the hospital with here from Thursday night until Tuesday morning, so things have been a little bit hectic for a while.

    But we are home now so things should start picking up again.

  33. bvrasp says:

    CONGRATZ DR. J!!!!

    is it a boy or a girl?? and whats his/her name??

  34. richard says:

    yeah DR J congratulations

  35. R.J. St.Croix says:

    oh man Doc your son is beautiful dude!!! congrats man the lil vid almost brought a tear to my eye….ok not almost lol. welcome to fatherhood bro, enjoy!!!

  36. Dr J says:

    Thanks guys. His name is Bradley William and he was 8lbs 2oz at birth.

    Only 5 more to go and I’ll be caught up with you RJ. I better get working on it, haha

  37. MAD says:

    Yea congratulation Dr J. Children are the greatest thing in the world. My son definetely changed my life for the better. Hope you and your wife the best.

  38. bvrasp says:

    @Dr.J

    So is he signed up at the Dojo yet???? hehe

  39. PATRICK says:

    OH AND REDS…. YOUR AN EFFEN RETARD….EVERYONE ONE DOSENT USE… I BET THE MOJORITY OF THEM USE ROIDS TO HEAL INJURIES

  40. Amir says:

    Holy crap,

    Congrats Dr. J…all the best…how soon are you gonna start his/her MMA training? lol…

  41. Amir says:

    On a side note, I have to say that even thought many of us, me especially, talk smack about Dana White…I just looked at the UFC website and the next 3 fight cards ARE FRIGGIN INCREDIBLE.
    I can’t wait to see how Mirko will deal with a larger, very strong Kongo. Houston Alexander IS NOT 6′ tall as they claim…I saw him live @ UFC71 and he was announced at about 5’9…lol. And of course last but certainly not least, Shogun’s debut.

  42. R.J. St.Croix says:

    did anyone notice that the UFC website added a bunch of PRIDE fights to there on demand website? it says “fighters who will be appearing at upcomming UFC events” and they have some Shogun fights some Rampage fights and some Henderson fights.

  43. todd says:

    @rj
    yea man i seen that too….they may be trying to use that just to get the fans to get to know shogun and rampage a little better. So i think it was smart on the ufc part to market them like this so the fans who dont know shogun and rampage a little bit better..and the other fighters comming in too……….oh yea has anyone heard that tim sylvia will be facing mark hunt this year…hey doc is that true? did mark hunt say that on his website?

    @amir Ya dana is starting slowly but surely getting all the fights and exciting cards that we all cant wait to see, he is getting better at handling all this new talent comming in and the mainstream extra stuff and the high demands…….

  44. todd says:

    hey guys!!! have you seen the youtube fedor/gonzaga cartoon? well if not here is the link….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je543q-48Pw doc do you think you can post this!! this is hilarious

  45. todd says:
