Evan Tanner Finally Returning to the UFC?

You all know I’m a big fan of former UFC Middleweight champion Evan Tanner and I’ve followed his career both in the UFC and most recently away from the UFC.

Tanner recently made a failed attempt to return to the UFC after his “fighter foundation” project went south. Tanner moved down to California, bought a boat and began training MMA again. Unfortunately, Tanner’s boat made the news when he sunk it in San Diego’s Mission Bay, and Evan declared on his blog that he wouldn’t be returning to MMA anytime soon as his struggles with alcohol had once again taken a hold of his life.

Waking up this morning, the internet is once again abuzz with news about Evan Tanner returning to the UFC. According to Evan’s personal website, he has signed a new four fight contract with the UFC and will make his return sometime in 2008.

Former Middleweight Champ Back in ’08
K.A.O.S. caught up with former UFC Middleweight Champ Evan Tanner who broke the news that he signed a 4 fight deal with UFC. Date, time and opponent still to be determined.

Much like Tanner former opponent David Terrell, I’m not actually going to believe he will fight again until I actually see him in the octagon and Buffer is calling out his name. I’d love to see Evan back in the UFC and I think the UFC really needs someone like Tanner to come back and help bolster a pretty weak middleweight division.

Evan, glad to hear you are coming back.

Hopefully this time its for real…

Its no secret that i never liked Tanner. I definately think he was a good fighter, even though he was the MW champ, i never thought he belonged at MW Even though there was a ton of talent at WW at the time, i still felt thats where he belonged, and still belongs today.

His skills are mainly in wrestling and dropping elbows, and he was also good at working from the clinch. We could see Franklin dominated him in the clinch, and Anderson dominated Franklin in the clinch. Realistically, Evan has almost no chance at beating Anderson Silva, so why bother fighting in that division?

If he fights at WW and manages to beat a few guys, he could work his way up, by the time he gets near contention Hughes will have retired and im sure Evan could beat Matt Serra. So there might be a future for Evan at WW, but MW? no way..

I really hope Tanner can get his alcoholism under control, get back in shape and return to the UFC. Recent pics of him don’t look good, and his postings reveal the depth of his problems. Tanner always seemed to act with dignity in the ring, and he definitely brings it to every match. I’m glad to hear he’s got a new contract with the UFC, and am looking forward to enjoying him in the anemic 185-lb divison (amemic after the top 3, that is).
