Matt Serra Off UFC 79 Fight Card

Matt Serra has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming fight with Matt Hughes at UFC 79 in December due to a back injury suffered during training.

Serra, the current UFC welterweight champion, apparently suffered a herniated disc in his back this past week while training for his fight.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Serra. “I’ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off of the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I’m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday – All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.”

What was scheduled to be a blockbuster fight card, just took a small hit. In my opinion, the Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva fight scheduled for UFC 79 will be moved to the main event. UFC 79 will also feature the UFC debut of Rameau Sokoudjou as he fights Lyoto Machida in a light heavyweight battle. No word yet on a replacement opponent for Hughes or if the fight will just be cancelled completely.

Actually it will soon enough.. between you and BV, you guys are coming up faster than I am keeping up, BV has posted TWICE as much as me in the past month and RJ you are keeping up pretty good, so I foresee his number dying within 4 months.. at least to the bottom…
haha ya Patricks been right there too, too bad its not basd on number of words, not number of posts hehe

i think if i was Hughes i wouldnt take just any fight right now. if he is only 1 or 2 fights away from retirement i would use those last couple of fights to fight the best guys i could.
Yeah, I agree, the deal is he needs to seal his legacy with 3 maybe 4 definite and dominate wins or else he will be the guy who was past his time and kept going … and nobody cares about those types… seriously if he can win the title and hold off his peers for even 2 title defenses and retire on top, it would be great for him, but picky is the word for his last few RJ I agree..

HANDS DOWN INTERIM TITLE GSP AND HUGHES… THEN THE UFC DOES CHAMPION VS CHAMPION AGAIN AND HAVE THAT THE SAME NIGHT THEY DO THE OTHER CHAMP VS CHAMP IF SHE PASSES EVERYTHING. THEN THEY CAN TITLE THE EVENT CHAMPION VS CHAMPION… PERFECT IDEA HEH KANSAS… DANA SHOULD HIRE ME LOL

  5. R.J. St.Croix says:

i think Hughes fighting Serra for the title as one of his last fights was perfect, he had an awesome chance of winning, it was for the title, and it was against someone who has talked all kinds of sh*t about him. i think Hughes should hold the title one more time then head off to retirement and the hall of fame.

they already did a champion vs. champion event, and there is no reason for an interim title Serra will not be out that long.

  7. PATRICK says:

WELL THEY CAN HAVE ANOHTER ONE.. AND I BET SERRA WILL BE OUT FOR LONGER … MAYBE SO HE CAN KEEP HIS TITLE HUH??????

Yeah, well that’s why I thought the “interim” champion idea for Penn vs Stevenson was a BAD idea from the get go, now it has set a presidence that will be followed and I think it will lead to future confusion in the sport…

Playing the devils advocate, I do see the point in a “buffer” for cases when champions “resign” and / or get injured, this would be the buffer to counter balance all that and keep the fights moving forward, although, I don’t think the UFC should hire you Patrick.. hehe

I don’t like Serra, but his injury is legit, even Matt Hughes as supported that..
I do understand your point though Patrick, the timing of it all seems funny to me but it is what it is…. at least Chuck or Wand didn’t pull, I would be in a cave for 3-6 months if they did.. hehe
