According to Matt Hughes’ personal website, Hughes will be fighting Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79 for an interim UFC welterweight title.
This past week, Matt Serra announced he was withdrawing from his scheduled title fight against Matt Hughes at UFC 79 due to a back injury. Tonight, Hughes broke the news that he would be fighting St. Pierre for the third time.
I’m going to fight Georges St. Pierre on December 29th. I’ve got a couple reasons why I’ve made this decision and I will share those at a later time. I’ve asked for this to be for an interim title and if Matt Serra can’t fight in a year, then this would just be the title fight; but I don’t know if that is going to happen right now. I will keep you all posted.
-MattEDIT: This WILL BE for the interim title, so it will be a 5-round fight. -Matt
Excellent news in my opinion. I can’t tell you how excited I am for UFC 79 and how glad I am sitting here thinking about how Matt Serra must be fuming right now. Just B-R-E-A-T-H-E, Matt, B-R-E-A-T-H-E. (You TUF fans will get that last joke).
** UPDATE **
UFC.com is now confirming the fight. Here is Serra’s reaction:
“I can’t believe the position this puts me in,” said the New Yorker, who won the title from St-Pierre and was looking forward to settling the score with the man he has been coaching against and trading barbs with on the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Hughes. “I’m actually rooting for Matt Hughes so I can beat his ass.”

hello boys….didn’t go to work today lol ….very interesting stuff…..don’t give gsp too much credit cuz we all know what happened last time….I don’t know what the hell hughes is talking about cuz he will get another *** beating like last time..im speechless though this is my dream come true…gsp will see this as a huge huge opp to get ahold of….ANYONE im confused though…does this mean serra will lose the title now this is interim at 79???????
It means Patrick that if Serra comes back ready before 12 months downtime is up, he gets to fight the “interim, (interim means “to step in or to FILL IN”, for the champ in this case) title holder, both are title holders, one will walk away as the UNDISPUTED champion. If Serra cannot fight within 12 months of his LAST fight, he forfeit the title and the Interim champ automatically gets the title, no longer interim, by default.
Be confused NO MORE.. kidding
thanks KANSAS u really cleared things up
Yeah Doc J you see that… Richard THANKED me for clearing that up… you should seriously consider putting me on the payroll man… hehe
I am going for GSP in this matchup, had it been Serra vs Hughes, I would be rooting for Hughes, but sans the Serra, its gonna be go GSP, and Wand of course that goes without saying…
hughes all the way the mans going out on top
hughes all the way the mans going out on top
IF Hughes can stay on top in his fight with St.Pierre he just might go out on top. heres a question for everyone. if Serra is gone for awhile then whos next for the winner of Hughes/St.Pierre?
RJ… HAVE KARO AND FITCH FIGHT…. THEN THE WINNER GETS THE SHOT
GSP WONT LET HUGHES LAY ON HIM THE WHOLE FIGHT FOR THE W….

Patrick, I am for once with YOU all the way on this… no way GSP will be subjected to being a mattress for Matt ‘dry hump’ Hughes…
Sorry guys.. I guess I will be one of the few that makes some bucks on playground.. GSP’s training with Rashad Evans, which tells me he will be able to counter the take down even BETTER than before, not to mention GSP is peaking.. he is younger, and more rounded, Matt is coming down the hill now, so he is not at his peak and he is a one trick pony, and everyone KNOWS what he is going to do, if you can train to prevent the scoop slam, your in business…
