ufC 79: Nemesis Preview

The UFC has saved one of their best fight cards for last, as they will close out 2007 with a bang at UFC 79. Matt Hughes, Georges St. Pierre, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva, Lyoto Machida and Rameau Sokoudjou are all fighting on what should be a great way to cap off a great year of UFC events.

Main Card

Matt Hughes vs Georges St Pierre – When current UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra had to pull out of his scheduled fight with Matt Hughes, Georges St. Pierre stepped up to the plate and how the two will meet in a rubber match for the interim welterweight title. Since losing the title to GSP at UFC 65, Hughes fought Chris Lytle to an uninspiring decision victory at UFC 68. Since losing to Serra at UFC 69, St. Pierre completely dominated Josh Koscheck at UFC 74.

Matt Hughes, by his own admittance is in the last days of his career and has relied on what has worked for him his whole career – his superior wrestling game. We all saw how GSP was able to handle Josh Koscheck and his “superior” wrestling game, and George’s should be able to do the same against Hughes. On the feet, the edge definitely belongs to St. Pierre, even though Hughes seems to be confident with his striking. I see GSP handling Hughes much like he did in their last meeting and winning without much of a problem. Winner: Georges St. Pierre

Wanderlei Silva vs Chuck Liddell – Finally, the fight we all wanted to see last year is now happening. While a Liddell vs Silva fight in Dec 2007 doesn’t hold quite the same luster it would have about 18 months ago, the fight is still highly anticipated by any long-time MMA fan. With both fighters coming off two straight losses, you might think each man needs the victory just as badly as the other. Personally, I think Liddell needs this win much more than Silva does. A loss would give Liddell three straight losses in the UFC and not much hope for the future other than retirement. A loss for Silva would be his first loss in the UFC in front of an American crowd, and would still leave room for him to bounce back in the eyes of the UFC fan base.

At the moment, I think Wanderlei holds the upper hand in this matchup. Wanderlei is more rested, having not fought since February and has had plenty of time to do nothing but train. Recently videos from Silva’s training camp show him to be in, what appears to be, the best shape of his career. Wanderlei’s wild, almost wreckless striking style matches up well to Liddell’s wild, looping striking style. While Chuck is great at avoiding takedowns, Silva won’t mind and will be happy to stand with Chuck in the clinch and land some knees.

Liddell has looked pretty sloppy in his last two fights, especially in his weak showing against Keith Jardine at UFC 76. Liddell had absolutely not defense against Jardine and I don’t him having a much different gameplan this time around. Chuck is, of course, still Chuck Liddell and you can’t count him out of any fight, but Chuck hasn’t shown much development in his game over the past 12 months and I don’t think the hunger and desire is there for him anymore. I expect a good fight between the two and only hope it can progress into the third round. Winner: Wanderlei Silva

Lyoto Machida vs Rameau Sokoudjou – The “African Assassin” makes his return to US soil after fighting in Pride 33 and 34 where he KO’d Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona both in the first round. Machida will provide another good test for Sokou and his experience and patient fighting style will really show us what kind of skills Sokou possesses.

While Machida is constantly viewed as a boring fighter, Sokou is one that loves to push the pace with his striking and judo background. I see this fight going the distance as Machida knows how to pick his shots and work the fight with his technical striking, but Sokou’s aggression should be enough for him to outpoint Lyoto. Winner: Rameau Sokoudjou

Rich Clementi vs Melvin Guillard – As much as the UFC loves to hype fighters with “bad blood,” the feud between Clementi and Guillard is the real deal. Earlier this year Guillard and Clementi began trash-talking each other via email and posts on The Underground Forum. The virtual feud let to a physical confrontation in February of this year when the two crossed paths after a local fight show where Guillard reportedly sucker-punched Clementi after a brief verbal exchange.

The two had to wait a while to face off in the octagon as Guillard was suspended 8 months by the NSAC for testing positive for cocaine metabolites after losing to Joe Stevenson at UFC Fight Night 9. With the suspension period over, Guillard and Clementi can finally settle their score and I expect some wild swinging from both guys. Winner: Melvin Guillard

Soa Palelei vs Eddie Sanchez – Eddie Sanchez, who is most known for being Mirko Filipovic’s first opponent in the UFC, is fighting for the first time since UFC 72 in June where he defeated Colin Robinson by TKO. Palelei last fought at Pride 28 way back in 2004 so it was a little curious when the UFC announced this fight against Sanchez. Palelei is a member of Team Quest in Temecula and has experience in Shooto as well. I really don’t think Sanchez has much to offer against most heavyweights and we really don’t know what kind of state Soa will show up in, so this one really is a toss up. Winner: Soa Palelei

I actually think Chuck is going to win. I think that Wand is going to have a difficult time re-adjusting to the enormous size of the cage and shortening the distance between his short arms and reach and Chuck’s face. Chuck has always been most successful against aggressive guys who come at him. I actually don’t think that Jardine dominated Chuck, I think it was a much closer fight than what the card said. I’m gonna go with Chuck here. YOU HERE THAT DENNIS? WHEREVER YOU ARE…I AM PICKING CHUCK!!!

  9. Dr J says:

    @Patrick,

    No caps is nice.

I dont’ think its a big deal about the “no signing bonuses.” The UFC will still be giving out the same amount and number of bonuses as before, they just will be official about it. No more so called signing or locker-room bonuses. Instead they’ll payout the money officially so the business has record in case something comes up again in the future like happened with Randy.

good call on the UFCs part if you ask me. but does this mean fighters are gonna ask for bigger pay days up front?

LOLOL what can you say.. this is just hilarious, did you flip flop that fast Jason? or are you playing both sides hoping to claim you called it no matter who wins? especially when your so vehement about Chuck winning saying your gonna come back and throw it in our faces when it happens lol.

In case anyone wasnt paying attention the last few months, these are my picks.. We talked about it so much, i dont think i need to rehash the reasons why..

    Hughes
    Wandy
    Soku
    Melvin

other thoughts… I also picked Sanchez to win, but im not very interested in that fight.. I would have MUCH rather seen Lister vs Radev, where im hoping Lister will finally perform up to his abilities. Its one thing to be great in the gym, its another to execute in the cage with millions of viewers.. Good luck Dean, dont let us down..

  15. bvrasp says:

My breakdown for the Playground betting odds..

OMG they have Hughes as a 3.5 to 1 underdog!??!? if anything its a tossup, 1.5 to 1 at MOST.. where do they get 3.5 from?? LOL. So for this one the smart moneys on Hughes because the odds are soooooo far off its ridiculous. This is the fight im betting on, and at these odds and considering everything will be reset for the new season, im betting the farm the cows the tractor, etc..

The Chuck vs Wandy odds are pretty accurate, bet on this one based only on principle heh. I would be betting the farm on Wand just out of principle, but i already put all my money on Hughes, the odds are just too strong.

Next good bet, Radev over Lister, im picking Dean to win but the odds are just crazy. If your a gambler, i would highly suggest taking this bet, at 6 : 1 its crazy. Dean has shown a tendency to choke under the pressure with 5 of his last 7 fights have gone to decision. Clearly cardio dump pressure situations for Dean, im sure he trains hard and hes not old or anything so it must be the pressure of fight night. This is a good bet for guys like zak, i say go for it.

The only other option is betting against Manny because theres a good chance he could reinjure his shoulder yet again..

Respond here, or on the playground because ill be reposting this on our fight camp forum, i figure we need some more posts in there heh.

So BV and I aren’t on the same page here, but most everything else we are…

Gatties…. c’mon get your head out of Ron Paul’s arse man.. you can’t pick both Mr. Clinton to play both sides of the isle and claim victory either way, that only works if your in politics, but we are the sharpest 10% in the country so we aren’t falling for that crap! lol!

  17. MMAKansas says:

MATT HUGHES HAS ISSUES WITH TIM SYLVIA:

Not convinced yet that Matt Hughes is an *******? Well, look no further than the following conversation between he and Tim Sylvia in an excerpt from his new book courtesy of The Sun:

“Tim Sylvia walked over to me during practice. His back was hunched a bit, like Pat’s is, but Pat I could look in the face.

‘Can I talk to you a second?’ he asked.

“Sure thing.” He led me into an office and we sat down on two chairs.

“No one here’s got a problem with me except you,” he began.

“When I first started, Jens would say I’m a fat piece of s*** who’s never going to amount to anything, and he’d get me crying, but now even Jens likes me. Is there a problem?”

He was waiting for me to tell him there was a big misunderstanding or to apologise, like I wasn’t aware of what I was doing.

“Yeah, I really don’t like you,” I told him.

    “Is there a reason why?”

    “I don’t think you’re a team player and I don’t think you work very hard,” I said.

“How am I not a team player?”

“Remember that whole thing with that girl?” I reminded him.

He waved those ridiculously long arms of his in the air. “They weren’t even going out!”

“Yeah, but you knew that your teammate had a thing for her and you went for it anyway. But I don’t even care about that. I’m talking more about training.

“When somebody’s got a fight coming up, everybody tries to make sure the guy’s got some training partners to get ready.

“Everybody tries but you. Your first priority is always Tim, and I don’t think that’s a good attitude.”

I wasn’t angry or even annoyed. I had as much emotion as if I were talking about the contents of a fridge.

“I don’t think you work very hard either. You’re a little sore and you don’t come in.

“Jens, who’s a champion, has been sore and he comes in. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been sore.

“No one’s ever going to be 100 percent. You just suck it up and you do it, period.”

I didn’t care one way or another what he said in response – I assumed he’d get defensive or angry.

But he didn’t; he was reasonable.

“I’m actually hurt to hear you say that. I’ve been a huge fan of yours for a long time and I’ve been trying to model myself on some of your work ethics, and the way Jens works out and stuff like that, and it’s too bad you feel like this.

“There’s nothing more that I want than to be accepted by you and the rest of the guys.”

“You don’t become accepted by buying yourself a ticket to Vegas, following us around while we’re there when no one really invited you, and then crying – again – when Jens calls you out on it.”

“Is there anything I can do to be friends with you?”

“Well, right now I have enough friends and I don’t need any more friends,” I said. “Is that it? Are we done here?”

He let out a deep breath. “Yeah, I guess.”

“Good.” I got up and left.”

Excerpt from Hughes’ new book….. what an *****.. I like Tim more, Hughes less.. and GSP the most of the three GO GSP!

well boys ive been watching interviews, press conferences, training videos, and any other media i could get my hands on for UFC79 and im now officially hyped up big time. Chuck is saying all the same things he has said before his last 5 or 6 fights and Wand sounds like hes ready to go, so this should be a good one. Chuck told Wand to his face that he gonna knock him out and when someone asked Wand about knees on the ground he just said i traded the knees for elbows. i hope this fight lives up to everything we hope for. St.Pierre looks driven man, he has this attitude about him like hes a bit cocky its kinda odd but its good he sounds ready to go. Hughes says hes in great shape (when is he not?) and he sounds like he would love nothing less then a 5 round war and i hope he gets his wish.

  19. bvrasp says:

LOL nice conversation Kansas.. I agree Hughes IS an azzz.. and Tim is a bit more sensetive than i thought.

Can you really see a good outcome with a scenario where one guy is saying, can i please be your friend? lol, thats fcked up.. i thought they were all friends anyways, but none of my boys would say anything like that.

Some people dont like slackers in the gym, i obviously have no idea what Tims like in training, but in any locker room, you dont get all sensetive like that. Especially around an obvious jock egomaniac like Hughes..

in the gym, in the army or in prison, theres certain things that are best left unsaid man lol.

I still like both guys, but Hughes is obviously not the guy to go to for emotional support.. look how pissed he got at Mike Whitehead in TUF, hes not a guy who accepts weakness in any form.

You will notice he also doesnt cry at mma events.. win or lose..

ya, about the wrestling thing.. Kos would beat GSP in a wrestling match in my opinion. GSP may have outwrestled him in the fight, but its a little harder to wrestle when your worried about getting kicked or punched in the face and getting KOed.

Trust me, theres alot more to Hughes than standard wrestling, its the mma hybrid wrestling that hes well experienced at. Its the way he incorporates the BJJ in his wrestling which Kos hasnt had time to fully develop yet. Its the GnP “tactics” he uses, positions he forces possibly to threaten submission.. theres a million things..

I could sum it up in one word.. experience.. Kos is nowhere near Hughes in “hybrid wrestling”.

Don’t get mad BV but your point was more towards “KOS” than GSP.. and GSP handled Hughes last time… was nervous in the first fight so whatever to that… and in my assessment can probably avert the take down by backing into the cage and standing back up.. I don’t know how Hughes will win or get a 5 round war decision, unless GSP gives him a late Christmas present…

lol, i wont get mad man hehe.. ya i was addressing the point where doc J said GSP out wrestled Kos, so he will out wrestle Hughes.

Now about your point, GSP might be able to avoid the shoot, but like you guys both said, Hughes is going back to his old style. The old style isnt just wrestling guys, its BODY SLAMMING! lol.. its been a while since ive seen the pattented Hughes bodyslam, and i dont think GSP will be able to stop that hehe..

  25. R.J. St.Croix says:

my picks for UFC79 are like this:
Hughes vs. St.Pierre – GSP winner by TKO late round 3. i think the only way Hughes can win this one is to bum rush GSP hard and fast and hump, hump, hump his way to a judges call. i can see Hughes getting a few take downs and a little g’n'p but GSP will still knock him out.
Silva vs. Liddell – Silva TKO round 2. i think they will spend most of the first round figuring each other out and in round 2 Silva will chase Chuck till he catches him and he’ll put a beating on him right quick, im thinking it’ll look a lot like the end Silva vs. franklin 1 or 2.
Machida Vs. Sokoudjou – Machida by unanimous. while i agree with Docs prediction for the most part but i dont think Soko will be able to out point Lyoto. i wonder how Sokos gas tank is gonna be, i can see him trying to end this one quick and being over aggressive and burning out in round 1.
Guillard vs. Clementi – Guillard TKO round 1. Guillard will kncok out Rich fast why? because he has to, to make an attempt to get his badly f*cked career back on track. oh yeah and he hits like a Mack truck.
Sanchez vs. Palelei – ummm? ahh? uumm? dirty Sanchez lol. the only reason im picking Sanchez is because ive heard of him lol.
the one undercard fight i wanna see is Roan Carneiro Vs. Tony DeSouza. have you ever seen two pissed off kittens go at it? well that what that fights gonna look like minus the ear bitting lol.

People here have ripped me ever since Doc started this blog and more often than not…I’m right. Hell I picked Jardine to beat Chucko, just like I picked Serra to beat Hughes, Griffin to beat Rua….shall I continue?[/quote]
awesome dude, i watch fights every night too and thats why i make the picks i do. and guess what im wrong A LOT so i guess you are a lot smarter then me. sh*t since you already know whos gonna win every fight you must be bored by the whole sport, why do you even bother watching anymore?

Jason! i was looking up some of your recent picks on the playground.

UFC 78 I see you picked Alexander over Silva LOL.. how do you explain that one professor? LOL oh thats right.. you hate on Pride fighters…

UFC 77 Vera over Tim Sylvia? LOL once again, im flabberghasted, could it be that the mma guru bought into the hype? or was it pure hatred against Tim Sylvia?

UFC 76 you didnt pick Jardine, you picked CHUCK!! LOLOL trying to play both sides of the fence again Jason??

From my perspective, i dont see these picks as being terribly insightful Jason.. Please explain them to me your highness..

ive been watching a lot of Hughes’ fights over the last few days and like i said before i dont like his attitude at all. before Hughes fought Lytle in the interview he was talking like “i dont know why Chris wants to fight ME for his big come back, im Matt Hughes the most dominate welter weight of all time. its not very smart on his behalf.” like come on Matt, yeah your great you dont need to tell us that.
