Jon Fitch

UFC welterweight Jon Fitch announced today that he has signed a bout agreement to fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 82.

Fitch last fought at UFC 76 where he defeated Diego Sanchez via split decision to improve his win streak to 14 fights. Fitch is currently caught up in the UFC’s welterweight holding pattern as the division has two champions in Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre. Once GSP and Serra face off, Fitch should be near the top of the list to content for the welterweight title in the second half of 2008.

Akihiro Gono is a Pancrase, Shooto, and PrideFC veteran who made his UFC debut at UFC 78 in November where he defeated Tamdan McCrory via submission in the second round. Gono is not an easy fight for anyone and will be a good test for Fitch.

UFC 82 is currently scheduled to take place on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio. The fight card will be headlined with a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson. Also rumored to be fighting on the card are Josh Koscheck vs Dustin Hazelett and Cheick Kongo vs Heath Herring.

I’m glad Fitch will be getting back in the octagon soon. I hope this Serra/GSP fight goes off w/out a hitch in April, cause there’s some real talent in the WW division that deserves title consideration. Fitch/Gono/Karo are all in that mix.

I have to go with Fitch on this one. Gono’s good but I think Fitch will be able to get him down and controll him en route to a decision.
