Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

The first UFC event of 2008 is in the books and a new UFC Lightweight Champion has been crowned.

  • While it lasted, BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson was an exciting fight to watch. It’s always unfortunate to see any fight, especially a title fight, be hampered by a serious cut early on. While the Penn-Stevenson fight wasn’t technically decided because of the cut, it certainly played a big part in the overall outcome. While I still think Penn was going to win the fight regardless, it’s tough to see something like that happen. Still, Penn looked sharp and on point with his strikes. His ground game is always but it really was his striking that threw Joe off his gameplan early on. The Sherk vs Penn fight should be excellent.
  • Gabriel Gonzaga vs Fabricio Werdum seemed like a pretty average fight, in my opinion. I’m surprised Gonzaga didn’t look to completely exploit his leg kicks considering how effective they were in the first round. Werdum weathered the storm and grabbed his second victory over Gonzaga in as many tries.
  • Wilson Gouveia’s knockout over Jason Lambert has to be Knockout of the Night. Lambert looked excellent through the first round and his aggression really was effective. Dropping his hands in the second proved to be his downfall.
  • Marcus Davis once again quickly KO’d his way to another victory over Jess Liaudin. I’m still not exactly sure what was so devastating about Davis’ KO punch; it looked to me like he punched Liaudin right in the side of the neck. My only guess is he caught the corner of his jaw, because Jess was on the mat for a while.
  • Jorge Rivera vs Kendall Grove got the night started with a bang as Rivera came ready to fight and show that experience can easily trump youth. Grove suffers his second straight defeat and faces a long hard climb up the middleweight standings.
  • Paul Kelly vs Paul Taylor has to be fight of the night. The match started off with shades of the Leonard Garcia vs Roger Huerta fight of 2007. Hands were flying fast and hard and the two Paul’s battled it out for three rounds of excellent action.
  • I know these overseas fight cards feature “local” talent, but guys like Colin Robinson don’t ever deserve to be fighting in the UFC.

i was a bit worried yesterday when i seen how in shape Penn looked but i didnt change my pick. i had a hard time being a BJ Penn fan for a long time because i didnt like his work ethic at all, but if he keeps up the way hes been for his last two fights he will be worthy of all the hype hes always gotten. Gonzaga threw that fight away, another hand full of lag kicks and Werdum would have been crawling around the octagon but it almost looked like he gave up in round two. Grove got mauled start to finish and it was finished quick. Davis’ KO was a bit weird. Gouveias KO made me giggle a bit just because the way it happened, i thought Lambert had that fight he was all over Gouveia and he end up face down and asss up lol. Taylor vs. Kelly was nuts i love fight like that. over all entertaining night of fights and i didnt even have to wait till ten o’clock for it to start lol.

  2. bvrasp says:

WOW! DOc, you really cleaned up on Werdum!, that dam fight cost me 200 hehe. Something struck me as strange though.. someone made like 37K on the first event?? how is that even possible? did he donate to the site to get money or something?? LAAAAAAME… doesnt put us all on an even playing field.. but whatever.

  3. bvrasp says:

    my response to ufc 80..

JORGE looked like a BEAST yesterday! he sure made me look silly with my comment about how it was a bad matchup. People are always saying stuff like “the old fighter fighter is back” The old Mir, the old Loiseau, etc.. I think we just saw a “NEW Rivera” hes never been that explosive or determined in the past. Hes not playing around man, Jorge must be training like an animal! now i actually WANT to see his next fight instead of complaining about why hes still in the UFC.

PAUL vs PAUL, fight of the night, without a doubt, what can you say besides they stepped into the center of the cage and just started throwing. Great fight man, respect to both guys win or lose.

DAVIS got his early KO, though it looked kinda funny, like he got KO with the jab before the hook even came around.. strange..

SAKARA looked good, finally, he showed some great takedown defense and worked his strong striking skills. Hopefully this tactic will continue to work for him, atleast hes learned from his mistakes, good job.

GOUVEIA vs LAMBERT was a pretty good fight, though very surprising how it ended.. im still a bit confused as to the result, but hey, all it takes is one good shot right? no matter how ugly and unintentional it might have been hehe. Were his eyes even open when he threw that hook?? im gonna have to go back and check it again..

GONZAGA should have won that fight, hes really becoming a well rounded fighter adding that nasty leg kick to his crocop style high kick. He has all the tools, but using them effectively is something you have to learn over time. Werdum did a great job taking punishment and holding on to finally get the win. His experience is definately what helped him beat Gonzaga. The kid needs more time, but everytime i see him in the cage he looks more and more dangerous! Look forward to seeing Gonzaga fight again, I dont think Werdum will get too far though, because most of the other guys in the division are well experienced aswell. I could see Werdum beating someone like Vera, but not Big Tim.

BJ vs JOE DADDY, BJ was like a bat out of hell from the jump man! he rushed in putting Joe down with strikes and i thought the fight might have been over right there! BJ got the top position and controlled the fight, hes just too good man hehe! Joe tried his best man, but BJ was climbing all over and around him like a jungle gym. The cut kind of crushed Joes spirit in my opinion, he felt like he had already lost the fight after that cut. Thats why he came out the next round just swinging wildly, burning off all his steam throwing very poor strikes. It seemed like he wasnt even trying to hit BJ, but just to show people that he wasnt finished and he still had strength. BJ ofcourse just stood back and let him swing wild until he got tired, then put him down again and got the submission from a battered bloody and exhausted Joe daddy.

Sort of a sub par fight card, but when the fights actually happened, it was very entertaining, great stuff!

  4. Maxx says:

I thought it was a solid card, and enjoyed it a lot. I did fairly well in the picks, but I should have put more money down. I’m not sure why Werdum was such and underdog in that fight, or what people thought gonzaga had that could beat him? I thought Cotoure had pretty well exposed Gonzaga, apparently not enough.

  5. bvrasp says:

Our Questions have been answered, Arlovski scheduled to fight at UFC 82 against…. Jake Obrien???? wtf?? ummm… why?

I think Arlovski deserves to fight some big name guys, and its not like theres a shortage of them at HW now. Why not Herring? or crocop? or Vera? or SOMEONE!!!!

I know, i know.. Jake is 10-0.. the biggest name fighter hes fought was Herring and he won by man love humpfest decision in one of the most boring fights in UFC history with Herring throwing his arms in the air repeatedly in frustration of a guy who didnt want to “fight” but just hug him on the ground for 3 rounds.. sigh..

Id much rather see Arlovski fight Herring than Jake.. but Joe Silva misses the mark again.. Man, i hope Arlovski crushes that guy in the 1st round, so we dont have to see Jake and his cowardly tactics for 15 min..

I was looking forward to andres next fight, now it may likely be yet ANOTHER boring fight that andre is a part of. Especially if he loses by manlove decision ot Jake.. ill be pissed man.. sigh.. i hate you joe silva!! lol

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

Jake O’Brian and a few other wanna-be man love porn stars are the reason the needs to implement a rule like in PRIDEFC were stalling results in a yellow card and a yellow card results in you losing 10% of you green.

  6. mmahero says:

BJ Penn was amazing! I always know BJ is a real talent. Unfortunately, half the time he only prepare for less than 2 rounds fight. wtf?! Anyway, I definitely think he should stay in light weight because in light weight, he always look more toned and prepared. If you see him fighting GSP and Hughes, he has a lot of extra ‘jiggle’ around his waist which means his cardio can’t be good. He lost both fights because of gas tank though he did injured his ribs with hughes’s fight. Anyway, even if he didn;t injured his ribs, he will still lose a decision to hughes for the next 3 rounds.

I am really looking forward to bj vs sherk. I think bj will have a hard time with sherk because sherk is stronger and also too ‘compact’ for any efficient submission move. At the same time, sherk will have a hard time to take down bj. So, my conclusion is sherk vs bj will be decided on stand-up brawl. And on stand-up brawl, bj will win by decision. It will be similar to sherk vs GSP before.

  7. Amir says:

    Hey BV,

Yeah what’s the deal with that dude that won $37,000? I looked @ his wagers but didn’t see anything special. How is that possible? Doc, please answer

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

like i said up there its because they parlayed there bet. they must have only made a small bet because parlays can make you a LOT of money.

      • bvrasp says:

ABOUT PARLAY BETS, for anyone like me who didnt notice.. in the betting screen theres a bunch of boxes you can check beside the fighters names. You can pick up to 4 fights and up to half your bankroll on a parlay bet and if ALL the picks you made win, then you win the Parlay bet. The way its calculated is, the odds stack together so if you pick underdogs, the multiplier goes higher the more matches you add.

Also, you can make 1 Parlay bet per each event. If we examine the guy who made 37K as an example.. He bet 500 and made 37K, wich is nice but also very risky. If he were to bet only 50, he would have made 3.7K which already dwarfs all of our teams earnings..

So in my opinion, EVERYONE in our camp should start making Parlay bets, if your not a big gambler, drop about 50 on 4 fights, the potential gain compared to the potential loss is huge.

        questions? comments?

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

i like to bet one “sure” bet and a few long shots in a parlay just so if i do lose i most likely will win something. this card i bet $200 per bet and bet on four fights and i put $200 for the parlay so i bet my whole $1000 but i won back $905 so im not down much but if i had won all bets i would have won $83,000+ so you just need to figure out how to make safe but big bets.

    bv

see i told you kansas is pullin a dennis….any way i got a chance to watch a few of the fights…. bj penn looked good…. i picked joe but what the *** ya know… good fight feel bad for joe.. whats next for him??? didnt see the werdum gonzaga fight cuz dont really care…..feel bad for kendal.. funny anyone see kendal do the thousand mile stare… lol good card though… bj will lose to sean in my mind…

    • bvrasp says:

      About BJ vs Sherk..

a couple people already said they expect BJ to lose to Sherk, i cant disagree more! Someone said Sherk would outstrike BJ lol, no man.. not in theis lifetime. The onyl other thing Sherk has is the man hump and that doesnt fly with BJ.

I said it against Joe Daddy and ill say it about Sherk, BJ is BUILT to beat these bulky, powerhouse, inflexible miniature hulks. I cant see BJ losing that fight, unless he lets his cardio slack again, but i dont think thats very likely. He seemes more determined than EVER to secure his legacy as a great fighter and ofcourse, now that the grosses are up, hes tryin get that PAPER BABY! hehe..

      • R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah Penns work in the gym has always been my beef with him, if BJ can keep up his new found pro level work ethic and can show it again he will make a fan out of me. if BJ Penn goes 4 or 5 rounds with Sherk and can beat him i think that will shut up all the Prodigy hater including myself.

        • bvrasp says:

I dont see Sherk going 5 rounds with BJ, especially without the roids! lol. I dont care what he says, when you take like 30 different supplements, you looking for a chemical advantage.

BJ will win that fight and ill put an MMAHQ T-shirt on it! even if they dont exist, its still a bet!

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah you gotta good point. i dont think i owe any t-shirts yet and i think this would be a bad bet for me lol. i got my money on Penn in that fight and im hoping very much he doesnt let me down again. and just so everyone knows i dont compleatly hate BJ sh*t i had him picked to beat GSP and that was hard for me to do, but he let me down to many times.

      • PATRICK says:

        bv
good point… i dunno if he beets sherk than ill be about bj

        • bvrasp says:

Think about it, look at how BJ handled Hughes when Hughes was at his PRIME. Hughes is bigger, stronger and has better wrestling and BJJ than Sherk. The way BJ fights, Strength is not a factor, the only thing Sherk has going for him is the conditioning.

          BJ baby… BEEEE JAAAAAY!

  9. PATRICK says:

whats this ******** with arlovski??? if obrian thinks hes gonna man *** the pitbull i dont see that happenen… arlovski aint a fat out of shape slob like heath is… lol… what the *** is wrong with joe silva

    • bvrasp says:

I just hope Andre doesnt lose to that guy somehow.. Jake is just sooo boring to watch in a fight. We wanna see Arlovski matched up with someone who will trade with him, you match O’brien up with ANYONE in the division and hes gonna do the exact same thing everytime..

  10. PATRICK says:

lol so werdum gets a title shot now… lol if i were arlovski i would walk from the ufc… they ***** with him bad….unless the moneys good andrei should walk….

  11. Amir says:

    Re: Arlovski vs. O’Brien

I mean, we’ve all seen Joe Silva drop the ball plenty of times with his “matchmaking”, but this is just downright comical already. Arlovski needs to give the performance of a lifetime in this fight to make the UFC realize that they need him a lot more than he needs them. According to his contract, I do believe he is gone after this one…win or lose. I think he will sign with Elite and I certainly would not blame him for the way the UFC has treated him. Regardless of how much money he wanted, he is a former champion and always a strong draw. What are we left with now? Tim Sylvia all over a again?

    If I was Joe Silva:

    Arlovski vs. Nog
    Arlovski vs. Gonzaga
    Arlovski vs. Kongo
    Arlovski vs. Cro Cop
    Arlovski vs. Mir
    Arlovski vs. Vera

CMO’N SILVA YOU LIL’ *****, MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

    • bvrasp says:

Ya thats what i was saying Amir, so many better matchups for Arlovski, almost ANYONE.

He cant leave the UFC though because realistically they pay the most money hands down. EliteXC could probably get him a good one fight payday, but as for long term, UFC is where its at.

I think Andre has to get a bit more vocal if he wins this fight. It seems like after every fight hes apologizing to the fans and everyone about why he didnt get the KO etc.. He needs to pull a GSP and get on his knees and ask for a title shot, generate a bit of talk about himself. Right now hes just been sitting inactive for a long time not saying anything.

Im not saying he should get a title shot, but if hes vocal on the ppv, they will have to give him some higher profile fights, assuming he does sign a new contract, which i hope he does….

  12. PATRICK says:

amir good points… i would leave if i was arlovski

  13. R.J. St.Croix says:

i think a part of the issue with Arlovski is they already exhausted the Arlovski vs. Sylvia thing and they need to keep atleast one of them in the mix and big Tim came out on top of that trio. would you get hyped if this upcoming title fight was Sylvia vs. Arlovski? some of us would but nowhere near if it was only there second or third meeting. i think if Nog beats Sylvia the UFC needs to push big Tim to the end of the line for atleast a little while a give someone else a shot at the strap for once, because i dont care about Sylvias fights any more and i know a lot of people feel the same. if Tim wins then they should put every tough heavy weight they can find in front of him maybe someday he will be exciting again.

  14. Amir says:

I think that little is known about the negotiating process that went down with Arlovski. The UFC was, like always, claiming that he was demanding more money…I’m not sure what Arlovski’s official stance was about the whole contract but you know what?

Arlovski beat Werdum and Werdum gets a title shot? that’s just so ridiculously absurd. And even though Arlovski vs. Sylvia is not an attractive match-up anymore…I sure as hell know for a fact that Arlovski is waaaaay more popular and exciting a fighter than Sylvia, so for Dana White to say that Arlovski has become boring to watch…is just completely hypocritical.

Bottom line, he should NOT be fighting Jake “Man-Humper” O’brien!!!

    Here’s another one

Arlovski vs. Eddie Sanchez…now that would be a helluva fight

  15. Amir says:

    Oh and by the way,

When Sylvia beats Nog, which I think he will, a Tim Sylvia vs. Fabricio Werdum, I predict is going to be one of the most boring and un-anticipated UFC title fights in MMA history. They better be sure to stack that card with some great match-ups…

And if it’s Nog vs. Werdum…great..even more boring

    • bvrasp says:

I think everyone knows im a Sylvia fan, but im not picking Tim over Minotauro. I think Tim is getting submitted in that fight, i still think Nog has the best BJJ in the world in the heavyweight division.

If Tim DOES win, i will be VERY HAPPY! but i dont see it happening..

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

i wouldnt mind seeing Nog vs. Werdum, it could be one hell of a ground war but because both guys are so good on the ground i could seed it turning into a boxing match with Nog and his chin coming out on top.

  16. Amir says:

I can’t say that I’ve been impressed with Nog’s performances in the UFC so far. I strongly believe that Nog is going to have to deal with what many heavyweights have had to deal with…Tim Sylvia’s reach and size. Also, I think Sylvia has just as strong a chin as Nog.

And this is coming from a Tim Sylvia hater…

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

ah Nogs only had one fight in the UFC and yeah it wasnt the best ive seen him but he is a much better fighter then he showed in that fight. i think Nog has more then enough skills to deal with big Tim and im sure hes very ready for this fight. this is gonna be a tough fight for both guys both have good chins, both have good boxing, Nog is very good on the ground and big Tim has awesome ground defense. i see this being a very close fight and if someone makes a mistake the fight could be over for ether fighter. by the way Tim is a +205 underdog on mmaplayground for this fight so if you wanna play the smart odds Tims a good bet IMO

    • bvrasp says:

Im a Sylvia fan, and lately Tim has shown some VSTLY improved defense on the ground. Randy couldnt submit him and neither could Monson. The difference here is that Nog is bigger than both those guys.

Randys fighting at maybe 225, 6’2″

Monson about 250, but hes 5’8 man lol.

Minotauro is 6’3 and comin in near 250. Hes got Randys height and Monsons weight and better BJJ than both of them. Ofcourse the experience and an iron chin. He hasnt looked too good in his first UFC fight, but i believe the pride guys will get better with every showing in the cage. It takes time to make that adjustment.

Id love to see Tim win that fight and get some much deserving respect, but im gonna be picking Nog in this one. Hes beat big guys like Schilt (whos bigger than Tim) and Strong guys like Goodridge and Sapp.. Hes beat incredibly skilled guys like Kharitonov, Hendo, Barnett.. etc, etc..

The guys already a legend, 2nd only to Fedor, i cant go against him just because i like Sylvia.. Tims in trouble guys..

  17. PATRICK says:

go big nog… i hate tim sylvia with a passion he can suck a big fat ****… hes a boring *** fighter… *** tim sylvia go nog!!!!!

  18. R.J. St.Croix says:

i keep going back and forth on Nog vs. Tim. i think right now i have Nog picked to win but that may change. i just hope that big Tim comes out to WIN this fight and try for the finish, Nog is a very dangerous fighter and i can see Tim throwing 50,000 jabs from 12 feet away and winning via loud belching between rounds.

    • bvrasp says:

I dont think the reach and jab thing will last too long against Nog, he will eventually close the gap and get the takedown. After a while on the ground i think Nog will get a dominant position, soften Tim up with some GnP, then finally submit him. Nog has the size strength and skill to be able to submit Tim.

Like Kansas said in the Monson fight, its dam near impossible to submit a guy whose arms and legs are so much longer than yours. Nog has all the tools to finish Tim, lets hope this one doesnt go to he cards.

      • PATRICK says:

        yayyyy go big nog

      • R.J. St.Croix says:

i wouldnt mind a decision if the fight is worth watching, both have the gas to go 5 im sure and they can both be very exciting lets just hope thats how it goes.

        • bvrasp says:

I hope it doesnt go the distance, it looks bad for everyone, ofcourse for Tim it reinforces the idea hes a boring fighter. For Nog it would support the theory that Pride fighters aint sht. For the UFC its just another boring HW title fight.

No.. someone has to get KO or submitted in this fight or it will be unremarkable and further sink the HW div.

  19. PATRICK says:

yea i say tim eats a fat brutis **** and chokes

  20. MMAKansas says:

Sucks to only have ol’ PATRICK TO TALK TO EHHH BV??!! LOL! His “indepth” posts are about as deep as learning to play with legos… lol no offense to Patrick, I can just see like you posting and him, and like 2 other guys posting and your conversation is like BV = “E = MC”….. then Patrick is like Patrick = “if you light a match when an elephant farts, can you blow yourself up completely”…. lol just funny to watch the posts going back and forth…

I bet the house on Tim but I would really like to be wrong and see Nog win… just me on this…

Ohhh…. I would rather see Mir win this fight, I think if he brings the old game to the fight he will.. if not, I can see Brocks brute strength and weight being a problem for a potentially out of shape Mir… Go Frank Mir..

    • bvrasp says:

KANSAS!! youve managed to encapsulate the Patrick thing perfectly!

When theres alot of people posting and he throws in some comic relief its fine, but when its just me and Patrick it doesnt quite work as a discussion. lol

  21. MMAKansas says:

Oh.. and you guys are talking about ME being a “Dennis” …. Richard hasn’t posted since Jan 10 … it’s been over 2 weeks now.. he’s a ghost, so I don’t want to hear it, I am still in the top spot for now (who even cares) and I have posted regularly with only a few days in between… I am having withdrawal symptoms post Wand/Liddell but will be back in full swing in Feb. … Wandy is in a 5 star resort right now in Natal soaking up the sun and enjoying his family for the next 2 weeks… then he is either going to train at Shoguns new academy here in the USA or he is going to Holland to train… either or he is taking a short break then back to the board to get ready for the next fight, and Shogun just opened his place so he is already training for his next fight… take a deep breath.. ahhh.. at least BJ won his fight… Penn, Wand, Rua, my fav fighters… 1 out of 3 won in 2007 at the end of the year so it was a tough year for Kansas.. BJ beat Pulver, that was about it…. but its 2008 and we kicked off the year right! BJ COMES OUT AND STOMPS STEVENSON.. now all we need is Shogun and Wanderlei to win their next fights in devastating fashion and life will return to normal.. ahhhhh…..

    • bvrasp says:

I feel ya bro, it was disappointing to see Wandy and Shogun lose, especially Wandy.. but he didnt get stopped and he was swinging till the final bell.

2008 is gonna be THE YEAR OF THE PRIDE FIGHTERS! Wandys coming back, Shoguns coming back, Nog is gonna be HW champ, Hendo gonna be the MW Champ, Rampage is LHW champ. All we need now is a Pride WW and LW and they will run the UFC heheh. Be nice to see Sakurai come to the UFC

  22. PATRICK says:

bv don’t bust my chops everyone here knows how much I love tim sylvia…

kansas good to hear from ya…ur right….where the *** is richard…either in jail???or his ***** kicked him out????I think richard is the one pullin a dennis……***

  23. PATRICK says:

    hey doc…

what happened to the never submit movie I seen prreviews of that other mma movie coming out looks kinda ***???

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

without a doubt after a bunch of kids see that movie you will see a big jump in sales for clothing companies like Tapout, Affliction, Warrior Wear, ect. and as far as kids going out and making backyard MMA leagues and fighting in parking lots like some people are saying is gonna happen i dont think we will see a very big increase of things of these nature. here is why, most normal everyday teenage kid doesnt want to be punched in the face or choked out nor do they want to go to jail for breaking laws. the kids that ARE gonna start backyard fightclubs are the same kids that would do it without a movie like this to give them the idea. do i think this movie is gonna be bad for MMA? no not really, having more main stream media attention wont hurt MMA even if its bad press. do i think this is gonna be a good movie? nope! this movie is covered in one thick layer of smelly cheese.

  24. bvrasp says:

LOL i agree RJ, the movie “fightclub” was more about the philosophy of fighting which made more people want to start real fight clubs.

This movie coming out “Never Back Down” looks like some 90210 kids fighting in the backyard of their mansions. Do i care if Brandon kicks Dillons azzz?? no.. not at all..

“Never Submit” was gonna be a great movie man, because they had FIGHTERS in the movie. Not a bunch of lame 20 something actors pretending theyre in highschool and trying to act tough. They still have the website for that movie, so im assuming its still in the works, hope that movie happens man. Im tired of watching “cradle to the grave” where Jet li beats up Chuck, Randy, Tito, Horn, Vernon and some other guys ALL AT THE SAME TIME lol.
