Today’s edition of TAGG Radio featured an interview with Ed Soares who is the manager for several UFC fighters including current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and top light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida..

Soares confirmed that after making his light heavyweight debut at UFC Fight Night 14 later this month, Silva would return to the 185 lb. division and fight Yushin Okami in his next title defense.

Soares indicated no official date had been set for the middleweight title fight, and that a date would be set after Silva’s fight against James Irvin on July 19.

There had been some speculation that the UFC had cooled on the idea of Okami getting the next title shot, especially after Patrick Cote’s recent win at UFC 86 against Ricardo Almeida. UFC President Dana White indicated that Cote had earned a middleweight title shot with the win which led to speculation that perhaps Okami was being leapfrogged in the contender rankings.

Glad to hear Okami is getting his well deserved shot. I mean the guys undefeated in the UFC except for a loss to Rich Franklin, but Franklins a beast.

Thats why i was confused about the winner of Cote and Almeida getting a title shot, maybe Cote could get the NEXT shot after Okami, but thats gonna be a LOOOONG time from now man.. Andersons gotta fight Irvin, then Okami, and THEN Cote.. were looking at like 6 months between each fight.

The idea that Almeida might have gotten a shot so fast was ridiculous, hes a good fighter, but he hasnt paid his dues in the UFC yet.

it seems like the whole title shot for Cote thing is the UFCs way of sorting things out in the middle weight division. to the casual fan the middle weight div. was kind of up in the air, now the can sell the Okami fight on redemption for Silva and the Cote fight in him earning a shot. by the time Cote gets his shot there could be a new contender waiting in line (Bisping is my guess) and maybe they can have Silva able to headline a card with a title fight again. lets face it the casual fans make up at least 50% of the p.p.v. buyers and who can they put in with Anderson right now for a title fight that will have people hyped enough to buy it.

Yeah… if they wouldn’t have given it to him he could have left the UFC and then held a title for Affliction making the UFC’s champ look 2nd tier.. smart move to give the man his due..

Honestly.. I think Okami will give Anderson a better run than Franklin or Hendo did.. I don’t know.. he just seems to be strong and smooth enough inside to make Anderson work harder..
