You should check out this one fight atleast RJ, the main event Condit vs Miura.. For some reason every site i checked has the same video, kinda sub par quality, but its still worth watching.. im watching it again too..

hes an observation… i didnt know you were allowed to cross face a guy on the ground with your knee lol. No word from the ref, if thats allowed, i dont know why everyone doesnt do that, you can easily break a guys jaw like that.

i watched that fight and man that was a good scrap. and a far as the knee crossface goes, there is no rule saying you cant place your knee on the face of a downed fighter so i guess its all good. if people do start to do it and people get injured (dislocated, broken jaws) they will most likely bar it, if not people will have to learn how to defend it.

      • R.J. St.Croix says:

on the subject of learning to defend things, i wonder when someone is going to come up with a way to counter a superman punch. Matt Hughes used a double leg on GSP (though it failed) in there 3rd fight that seemed like it could have been a good answer. but if you think about it, if you throw an even half asss accurate superman punch it works almost every time unless there out of range.

In Kempo that move with the knee was one of the “mongol locks” we werent really allowed to practice it because its so easy to hurt the other guy. In our dojo it was basically a carpeted solid floor so it was a VERY hard surface, the idea was to develop a REAL breakfall unlike if your on mats.

I guess in the cage its got some padding so its not as bad if he lightly pinned the guy using his knee. But even so, if he was right on where the mandible connects to the upper jaw it would be very easy to break/dislocate. Like if he did a little hop and dropped that knee on him daaaam! or if the other guy bucked and ended up eating that knee again blaaaam! lol.

You dont even need to make space to create the necessary pressure, you can drop all your weight on his jaw while still touching the jaw.. hard to explain but you know what i mean.. Its just a really dangerous move.

About defending those 2 moves. For the knee, it kinda puts you off balance and you can be swept pretty easily, if your in that spot your better off staying in the crucifix position. Deciding to use the knee like that is more like a finishing move than a pinning move.

Defending the superman, like everyone knows the best defense to any strike is to not be there as per bruce lee hehe. To counter the superman, i think the most effective move would be a kick, front kick, hick kick, etc.. Superman is great, but you also have ZERO balance at the time and if you get hit you probably go down.

The thing about ANY counters is that you have to predict what the guys gonna do, almost any strike is too fast to react to and the superman is VERY quick. Like countering a straight with a hook, you gotta know its coming and time it right

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

so true about the “mongol lock” and the way you could crush down without lifting your self up, its something you do in skateboarding during grinds and slides, i call it un-weighting yourself. and your also bang on with the front kick counter, i dont know why i never thought of that lol. next time i spar im gonna use that. the hard part of countering a superman punch is that it starts off looking like there gonna kick and you zone in a bit on the leg, then bam you get hit with a punch. i guess because of the whole jumping part of the punch a good quick foot sweep would work well to and it would be so much more effective then a regular foot sweep due to the lack of friction from the feet touching the ground.
