Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk will fight Tyson Griffin at UFC 90 this October in Chicago, IL.

Griffin is coming off a strong performance against Marcus Aurelio at UFC 86 where he won by unanimous decision, raising his record to 5-1 in the UFC.

Sean Sherk is coming off a TKO loss to current UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn at UFC 84 after sitting out nearly a full year due to suspension. Sherk is looking to bounce back and assert himself at the top of the lightweight class.

Surprisingly, and perhaps foolishly, Griffin thinks he may have a better wrestling game than Sherk in addition to a stronger standup game.

“I think my wrestling ability will match up very well with his,” Griffin said. “I wrestle with Division I wrestlers all the time, like Gray Maynard and Johny Hendricks. I came a long way since I started training MMA. My wrestling may be even better than his. I don’t know for sure — we’ll find out.

He’s got good hands, too,” Griffin added. “I think I have better standup, though. He (tends) to throw only arm punches where he doesn’t really commit. I’d like to stand out of his range and pick him apart like B.J.”

UFC 90 is currently scheduled for October 25 at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, IL. The even will be headlined by a middleweight title fight between current champion Anderson Silva and challenger Patrick Cote. Also on the card are fights between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves, Pete Sell and Josh Burkman, and Hermes Franca and Gleison Tibau.

I mentioned this like 2 weeks ago, but im guessing it was still a rumor and now its official because Dr J is posting it and hes very reliable.

So like i said before, looks like theyre throwing my boy to the wolves. He definately worked his way up to fight a top 5 LW fighter, but now that hes here, hes actually gotta fight these guys.

I would have liked to see Tyson fight Kenny or Huerta, or maybe even a rematch with Frankie Edgar. Who i DIDNT want to see him fight was Joe Daddy or Sherk, but hey, you gotta fight who they put in front of you… RIGHT NOONS? hehe

To breakdown the actual matchup, i think Sherk bests him in every aspect of the game. Wrestling definately, Striking most likely, Stamina no contest.

So is Tyson gonna win a 3 round fight with Sherk? sadly no, Sherks gonna pull out his decision BUT ofcourse stranger things have happened…

On another note.. Goran Reljic is moving down to 185 WOW, this guys a very underrated fighter, dam, hes gonna be HUGE at 185. The MW div needs new talent and Reljic is definately gonna shake things up for the mid level UFC MW guys. Once he gets some more experience against some UFC veterans he could definately make his way to the upper echelon of fighters at MW.

were talking about a guy whos 6’3 bigger than Franklin and Silva, who walks around at over 220, coming down to 185, im really excited about this. Plus hes 8-0 though only 1-0 in the UFC with his win over Gouveia whos a decent fighter, im really excited about this move, now the question is.. who will be his first opponent??

      • bvrasp says:

Looks like theres another amendment to UFC 90, Goran Reljic vs Thales Leites, dam this is shaping up to be one hell of a fight card.

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah it should be a good scrap, im liking this Reljic kid too. hes kinda like mini CroCop, one thing is, hes going to need to learn how to throw some right handed stuff because hes going to become very predictable if he continues throwing only left straights and left high kicks. a guy like Anderson will eat you alive if KNOWS your only going to throw one or two kinds of strikes in the fight.

        • bvrasp says:

Oh definately, hes got ALOT to learn before he takes on the likes of Franklin or Silva. Hes got great potential, but lets see if hes able to realize that potential, or he goes the way of so many other future legend hopefuls, like Overeem..
