Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

  • For all the excitement and fireworks both Michael Bisping and Chris Leben promised for their matchup, neither delivered on their promise. The main event was a technical fight that probably didn’t intrigue many watching. Overall, Bisping out-pointed Leben and frustrated Leben throughout the fight. Is Michael Bisping ready for a title shot against Anderson Silva? Not even close. But then again, who really is?
  • Brandon Vera took another step towards “no man’s land” with his loss to Keith Jardine. Both Vera and Jardine fought a good fight, but Jardine landed the better strikes and was more active than Vera. Who knows what the future holds for Brandon Vera but my guess is that his time in the UFC is quickly drawing to a close.
  • That sound you heard about halfway through the SpikeTV broadcast last night was the last few stragglers climbing off the Sokoudjou bandwagon. While Sokou showed explosive quickness in the first round, he was constantly stalked by Luiz Cane who showed excellent poise and a great gameplan. Cane used his first main card appearance to his benefit as he showed exactly what makes him such a dangerous fighter. While Sokou definitely has some work to do, losing to Cane wasn’t completely unexpected (at least not in my book).
  • There is a reason guys like Chris Lytle and Paul Taylor continue to get opportunities in the UFC. They fight like madmen and are supremely entertaining to watch. The all-out slugfest that Lytle and Taylor put on last night was exciting from start to finish. It’s amazing neither man was knocked out as they both landed some major blows.
  • Marcus Davis continues to impress with another solid victory, this time against Paul Kelly. Davis’ striking was excellent as usual and he ended the fight by securing a guillotine choke in the second round. I like watching Davis fight and hope he can get over the hump soon and start defeating the upper-class opponents.
  • I’m sure most of you didn’t see the Shane Carwin fight since it wasn’t televised, but keep his name in the back of your mind. This guy is someone to watch out for in the heavyweight division for 2009.
  • Joe Rogan’s beard was sweet.

What you mean Doc?? I think Leben delivered, he was chasing Bisping the entire fight even dropping his hands and begging Bisping to stand in the pocket and trade with him. Bisping was planning to go to the cards as he said, ya it makes it a boring fight, but cant really blame him for fighting a smart fight.

Ya im done with Sokoudjou, hes looking worse every time we see him, he was exhausted the entire fight, i think hes done man.

How bout Lytle calling out Marcus Davis? wow, bad move Chris, at this point in his career Davis is a beast, but it could be a nice fight.

Actually they DID air the Shane Carwin fight, i think it was between the Sokoudjou and Vera fights.

Overall it was a good event mostly thanks to Lytle and Taylor hehe that was an awesome fight, especially the start of each round.

as a side note, we got our *** kicked on the playground this event, except for doc who had a respectable 60 something, the rest of us pretty much took it on the chin. Oh well, better luck next week!!

Doc, In regards to Joe’s beard, my first thought is dang… He must have lost a bet. haha

I thought Leben came to fight and Bisping came to dance… run… heck just stay away from the other guy all together..

I hate these kinds of fights, I mean Bisping did NOT push the action, he also got taken down solidly and hit while coming back up, I know the he scored jabs and such, but Leben honestly if you score not on BOXING’S scoring system but on MMA’S system, I thought Leben would eek out a split, he had the agression, take down, and did land strikes, I mean he was landing shots too..

I got what I expected from Bisping, and England for that matter, I mean heck if you fight Bisping IN England, you cannot win unless you knock him out, and all he has to do is run from you to his judges…

that fight was pertty lame on bisbings part but it would of been worse if he would of gotten knocked out on his home turf.

      • bvrasp says:

Kansas, i wouldnt say Leben got enough points to warrant a split. It sucks but Bisping must have landed more than double the punches and at a higher percentage. Apart from the technical aspect of the fight, did you see Lebens face by the time it was over? I was disappointed too, but it happened and its not like Bisping is denying it either, he said it was his gameplan to win a decision.

The lame part is before the fight Bisping was saying his straight punching style would KO Leben and he wanted to end it in the 1st round. Then after the fight he revealed that it was his plan to eek out a decision, pretty lame strategy (much like Diego vs Kos). In the end Bisping is in the W column collecting a winners purse and Leben gets an L and a new scar to add to his collection.

Its Lebens own fault, hes heavy handed and hes got an incredible chin, both of which you cant teach to a fighter. Hes got all the tools and raw talent to go far, but he has one huge disadvantage, his brain.

He started off well setting up his shots with leg kicks, and by the end he was just walking into punches with his left hand cocked. He deserved to lose that fight man, until he realizes this isnt the tough man competition and starts fighting more intelligently.

        • richard says:

hes like dan henderson but with his left he did nothing to try to hide the punch he was just throwing it

It’s a good thing this was free. Bisping has NO POWER whatsoever at Middleweight. I can’t believe he admitted to wanting a decision. I don’t see the UFC serving up their “UK Golden Boy” to Silva just yet, cause he doesn’t stand a chance. Chris Lytle fought his heart out, I just don’t get the comments about his skilled striking, it was obviously, just the opposite. I used to be a Vera fan back in the day but I’m really sick and tired of hearing his constant bs pre-fight hype. The entire time I was watching it I kept telling myself he wouldn’t come out and do what he’s saying…and sadly, I was right. He has become the opitamy of a guy who fights to NOT lose rather than win.
