World Victory Road held their Sengoku VI event yesterday in Japan where local hero and top lightweight Takanori Gomi lost via split decision to Sergey Golyaev.
Golyaev fights out of Fedor Emelianenko’s Red Devil fight club and was considered a heavy underdog against Gomi. Fighting on his home soil in Saitama, Japan, Gomi was expected to cruise to victory and appeared to be controlling the fight until the second round. The second round saw Golyaev nearly end the fight via TKO but Gomi held on and was able to push the match to a decision. Must to everyone’s suprise, the hometown fighter lost on points via split decision.
Gomi has been anything but impressive since 2006 losing a fight to Nick Diaz that was later ruled a no-contest, and then following that up with a victory over Duane Ludwig via cut and an underwhelming decision victory over Bang Seung Hwan at Sengoku IV.
