Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

The more I keep thinking about the UFC 91 main event, the more I don’t see Randy Couture losing.

When most fans talk about Brock Lesnar and his chances to win this fight, the discussion always centers around Brock’s size and strength. Of course, Brock has the size and strength advantage, but let’s sit back for a minute and think about what sport these guys are competing in: mixed martial arts!

Has there ever been another sport where size and physical strength mattered less than in MMA? From UFC 1 with Royce Gracie all the way through UFC 91 today, we have seen time and time again that technique, skill and gameplan can easily make up for any size differential. So with that in mind, I’m still curious to see who the majority think will with the UFC heavyweight belt on Saturday night.

Who Will Win the UFC 91 Main Event?

  • Randy Couture (64%, 69 Votes)
  • Brock Lesnar (36%, 39 Votes)

Total Voters: 108

either way the winner is gonna shock someone

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

i will be far from shocked if Randy wins, infact i wouldnt be surprised at all.

      • BreakingNews says:

Far from shocked? Well, than again, your prediction for the Herring/Lesnar fight was…

“i just think this is a bad match up for Brock, Herring has great scrambles and is good at creating them too and as big and strong as Lesnar is i dont see him holding Heath down very long and Herrings stand up HAS to be better then Brocks.”

        • bvrasp says:

I dunno, i have to agree with RJ on that one too, i wouldnt be shocked if Randy won either man. Hes the veteran fighter of the two, hes a hall of famer AND hes the champ… and they make him the underdog LOL

  2. R.J. St.Croix says:

the way i see it is Randy has about 150 different ways of winning this fight and Brock only really has one or two, but the thing is the one or two options that Brock has are going to be harder to stop. Brock will have the chance at catching Randy on his feet and due to his quickness and power he could put Randy out, but then again that same thing can happen to any fighter anytime including Randy dropping Brock. but more likely the way Brock will win (IMO) is constantly and repeatedly putting Randy in positions where he can use his size and athletic prowess to control things.

  3. Zak says:

I must say I disagree with most pro randy opinions being thrown out here. Brock Lesnar’s wrestling creditiens are what give him serious credibility, not just his size and strength. As a pound for pound wrestler, perhaps Randy is better. But over all you have to give the edge to Brock. So far, I haven’t seen anyone be able to withstand Brock’s tackdown for over a minute. Granted Randy is a better wrestler than Brock’s last 3 fights, but comon Brock is half man half gorilla.

Randy doesnt really have the greatest submission game in the world. In fact, the only time i remember seing him submit people was in pros vs joes. (i no he has won by submission so you dont have to say it). But the point is that when Brock takes Randy down, I dont see any kind of threat towards Brock. The people that can and will beet brock in the future bjj guys who can submit him off their backs.

I dont think Randy will be able to stop Brocks take down. He’s too strong and too fast. And if Randy gets Brock down, he will have a very hard time keeping him there. I would bet my house that Brock wins this fight.

    • richard says:

im saying randy for sure seen the mir fight and by now is very very aware of any foot or leg submissions

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah thats the point that pops out for me too, Randy is not Nog off his back so if Brock can stay on top and stay cool in the scramble he should do good in the wrestling department. IMO Heath Herring has some of the best scrambling skills in MMA and i figured that would eventually win him the fight against Lesnar but Brock stayed cool and didnt let Herring get to a good spot and its a very real possibility he can and will do the same to Randy.

      • bvrasp says:

After watching the tapes of that fight over and over, dont you think Randy has a solution for that wrestling hug position Lesnar used against Herring? dont you think hes had 300 pound guys start off in full mount or side control during his training camp?

Trust me guys, hes practiced all the escapes to those strategies we saw and definately alot we didnt see. Also Herring already ate the surprise punch in the eye from Brock, so Randy wont fall for it.

I agree with what you guys said about Brock winning in like the first 30 sec of the first round, theres always a chance of that when a guy is that big man. Brock could charge in like a bull, correctly predict what side Randy will dodge to (50-50) and pick him up with a running slam type thing causing any type of injury (rib, shoulder, leg) and ending the fight.

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

lol wouldnt that be crazy a big KO slam for Brock 9 seconds in lol

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah i gotta agree Randy very likely has all bases covered and if there is a way to expose a hole Randy will use it, i just have this ugly feeling we’re in for a 25 minute humpin’ and like i said before i hope im very wrong. i would like nothing more then to see Brock rush in just to have Randy surprise the piss out of him with a take down to half-guard and drop a few bows on his head and when Brock freaks out and gives up his back Randy sinks in the choke…. man i think i just talked myself into picking Randy lol… this might not be the greatest match-up of all time, but i sure is a hard one for me to pick lol.

  4. Lam says:

I am still on the fence. The more I think about it the less certain I become. I initially chose randy for obvious reasons and then switched to Lesnar (which is who I chose on the playground) But even now I still dont know.

    • R.J. St.Croix says:

i know what your saying man, Brock should NOT win this fight but if there was ever a sport that a total nobody can beat the best this is it… and if there was ever a better chance for the upset…

  5. R.J. St.Croix says:

BTW Doc seems to have a crystal ball for fights like this so dont be surprised if the fight goes exactly like hes calling it. lol im just saying this now so when im wrong later it wont seem so bad lol.

  6. R.J. St.Croix says:

lol i was reading this thing on sherdog called “Pro Picks: Couture vs. Lesnar” and its was your typical “i pick him because…” and “he will win because…” until i got to Mac Danzig’s pick:
Mac Danzig: I think Randy wins this fight with experience and overall ability. It seems like Lesnar’s best chance of winning is if he can hold someone [down] for three rounds like he did to [Heath] Herring. I don’t think he can do that to Randy. Plus, he has a giant ***** tattooed on his chest, which can’t be helpful.
lol i didnt expect that at all, i almost hit the floor i was laughing so hard lol.

  7. bvrasp says:

Anyone wanna see a cool video from Danas UFC 91 blog? he goes to THQ and gets to play UFC 2009. Theyre having a ball playing this game and we have to watch and wait.. ********!! lol

Pretty low quality video, but i think its Lesnar vs Nog, man Danas really on the Brock bandwagon bigtime!

  8. R.J. St.Croix says:

from my count it looks like i got 76 points on playground, i think i did fairly well tonight. kind of a bitter-sweet bummer for the main event.

  9. bvrasp says:

I think im probably in the 40-50 range.. not too good this time out, but we’ll see.. I know for a fact that im getting zero for 3 of the fights. Overall it was a great event, no problem figuring out who got KO and Sub of the night.. wow!
