As most of you know, today is a national holiday here in the United States and on Thanksgiving we are all encouraged to give thanks. Well, many readers of MMA HQ will have something extra to give thanks for today as Jorge Gurgel has been released from his UFC contract. Don’t feel sorry for Gurgel though, as Jorge has something to be thankful for himself – a new contract with Strikeforce.
Gurgel must have known that he would be released as he had a contract signed with Strikeforce shortly afterward. The exact terms of his new multi-fight deal with Strikeforce have not been disclosed.
I am very very excited to part of Strikeforce and given a chance to fight new blood and capture a belt. UFC has been my family for a few years now but I am ready for the next chapter. There are some amazing contenders in my weight class including Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez. I will do whatever it takes to climb to the top of this league.
After brining a 10-1 record into the UFC, Gurgel landed on hard time in the Octagon with an overall record of 3-4 in the UFC including losing his last two fights.

please, pleeeeese, someone comment on this one, i dont know how long i can hold out without saying something and i dont want to be the first meany lol.
LOL RJ, i was actually waiting for you to take the lead here. Ok here goes, i think Dana cut him fromt he roster because hes jealous of JGs gorgeous hair. Nice pic doc! looks like he moussed his armpit hair too, nice!
hehe on a more serious note, JG is a much better BJJ trainer than he is a fighter, good luck to him in strikeforce and his school.
im really kinda upset about this, how could the UFC let someone as pretty as JG go…. lol. on a different note, i wonder if this a sign of things to come like a whole “win or go home” kinda deal?
@BV – Gotta agree, those that can’t do, TEACH – besides, as we can see UFC is cutting ALL the fat off the meat right now, the economy is not too good, and some of these guys’ contracts are just weighing down the asset/liability margin- heck its a business, I would have to say, if Wand doesn’t win his next fight in convincing fashion, we might see a problem there too, same for Keith Jardine …. same for Joe Stevens ..
im not sure we’ll see Wand on the chopping block just yet, there is a select few fighters who just have that “it” factor that will keep them employed. Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, and Rich Franklin are all guys who could pretty well lose over and over again and not get cut, then there is guys like Randy Couture and Wanderlei Silva who are so loved that they would have to screw up pretty bad to get cut. Sokoudjou, Gurgel, and Werdum can easily be forgotten by 70% of the fans.
on another note, Carlos Newton headlining new canadian MMA promotion Warrior 1. Carlos is 4-7 in his last 11 fights, but even so hes still a legend to me and i hope he does well.
Theres a few fighters coming back to MMA in 2009, Ricardo Arona, Masakatsu Funaki an dGenki Sudo to name a few. Ofcourse this is all just talk and they havent officially signed with anyone, but i hope its true.
yeah man Carlos was the first Canadian champ to get behind, although im not sure if im proud to say my first ever favorite Canuck fighter was Harold Howard lol. and for the rest, you know me i always like to see the ol’school boys throw down.
sweet…. now im excited for this… grugel sucks
a little late on this one but FINALLY!!!!
damn guys … a lil quiet on this website lately huh
Not much happening in the MMA world Patrick… we got WEC on wednesday which isnt too great of a fightcard but without EliteXC were getting desperate for decent MMA events. Then next week theres the UFC fight for the troops, another crappy fightcard, the best fight is probably going to be Fioravanti vs Brodie Farber. Then TUF finale… another sad compilation of bouts.. sigh..
We have to wait until the end of the month to see the marquee fights we crave. UFC, Dynamite and Sengoku all have very respectable cards, cant wait for that.. until then.. zzzzzzzzzzzzz…
