- Congratulations to the new UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans. Evans looked very tentative and hesitant through the whole first round and most of the second round in his fight against Forrest Griffin last night. However, after withstanding a barrage of strikes from Griffin in the second round, Evans seemed to get his trademark swagger and started engaging more. Going into the third round down two rounds on the score card, Evans waited for his shot and took it to pound Griffin.
- There is not a single person on the planet who thought we would see Frank Mir KO Antonio Nogueira last night, but that’s exactly what happened. Mir truly did fight a near flawless fight and was consistently landind jabs and uppercuts right down the middle against Nog. Sure, Nogueira has been nocked down in most of his fights in the past, but Mir knocked the former champ to the canvas on four differnt occassions and thoroughly KO’d the reigning champ. Huge congrats to Mir for regaining the belt he held ever so briefly before his accident.
- As much as the core fan-base here at MMA HQ didn’t agree with my preview of the Quinton Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva fight, Jackson fought the fight I thought he would en route to his first victory against Silva. If you watch the reply of the end of the fight, Jackson’s defense was perfect during Silva’s looping strikes and his counter-attack was right on the mark. Throwing three additional strikes to Wandi while he was already KO’d on the ground was clearly a personal statement. The KO reminded me of the way Rampage recently KO’d Chuck Liddell.
- Yushin Okami won another fight via decision, this time against Dean Lister. The victory will keep Okami in the UFC, but will it get him a title-shot against Anderson Silva?
- Matt Hamill didn’t look very sharp in the first round of his fight against Reese Andy, but he came back in the second round to turn on the heat and pick up another nice victory.
- Look for Ryo Chonan, Dan Evensen, and Reese Andy to be on the short list for the next round of UFC roster cuts.
- A Quinton Jackson vs Rashad Evans light heavyweight title-fight is a very interesting matchup and one that I still haven’t made up my mind on a prediction yet.
- No matter if he wants to deny it or not, Forrest Griffin tapped last night under the steady stream of punches from Rashad Evans
- The Ultimate 2008 was an excellent fight card to end 2008 with, and I’m excited about what’s to come in 2008

i must say that mir yesterday looked great,he didnt looked gassed his punches were fantastic and i think he has a new found confidence in himself.
Agreed Richard, Mir looked amazing with his combos, he completely dominated Nog… the only thing that was a bit disappointing was that we didnt get to see who had the better Jits.. but it didnt even matter anyways..

BOLA14 kicked some serious *** on the playground this time :) good job Richard, i think that was your higest score ever. I managed to do a good job considering i got zero for all 3 of the main fights on the card, but i nailed 5 OF THEM dead on including the hot bout… yay me! :)
On a side note, we said MikeD has the 1st place position clinched in the overall points, but he took it in the *** this event and i overcame that 30 point defecit and edged him out by 1 point SWEEEEET!!!
yeah good job to BV for the come from behind, and Bola14 (Richard) for the big win last night. and also i_rgenius gets a solid third place for both picks and wagers, Doc easily locked down the wagers for last night with Maxx not all that far behind. as a camp we didnt do all that bad seeing as last night was quite the crazy event. i can hold my head high with getting a 4th place in our camp for the season as i was shooting for a top 5 finish, next season i’ll try for a top 3 finish and see how that goes lol. good job all and lets make next season even better.
Yea I really bombed this event. I thought I had the win already so I went for some long shots. Sucks to lose that way. Oh well I’ll be ready for next season. Won’t get ahead of myself and play smarter. Second still isn’t bad considering how poorly my points were from this event.
im not sure your picks were all that bad (as far as long shots go) it was just one of those weird event with some dogs winning some favorites winning, so what can you do about that.
Wow… I think Wand is pretty much finished, not because he can’t fight, but at this point he is looking at 4 losses in his past 5 fights, and all by KO save the Chuck fight, which has showingly made him gunshy, and now this when he finally pulls the trigger, as soon as he opened up, the ONE time in the fight he let loose a 3 punch comb.. out… man… I gotta say as far as MMA goes I am DEPRESSED…. BJ is the underdog, but my 2nd fav.. and then Shogun, who hasn’t done crap in like 2 years except lose his UFC debut… someone lift my spirits cause man, I don’t know if I can handle all of my fav’s getting it in 2008-9….
Rampage is definately was getting it in on that fight with Silva
Man, I hate to say I told ya’ll so…ok maybe I don’t hate to say it that much…lol..,Rampage did just what I thought he would.
Forrest DID obviously tap and I still can’t figure out how he lost in the exact same fashion that he did to his opponents training partner no less (Keith Jardine).
you really thought Rampage was gonna KO Wand quick? i gave Rampage a WAY better chance at winning then i would have in past years, but i no way did i see him counter punching that well and putting Wand out. in retrospect, Rampage has shown great counter punching in his last few so i guess its not that outlandish of a thought, but i totally didnt think he would have the sack to stand in the pocket and exchange with Wanderlei.
