Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

  • Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson fought the type of fight we expected from two former champions. While the fight was closely contested throughout, to me it was clear that Henderson won the fight. How any judge could have given the first round to Rich Franklin baffles me.
  • Mark Coleman looked like a 44-year-old MMA fighter and Mauricio Rua didn’t look much better then he did against Forrest Griffin. The “Shogun” Rua of 2005 is clearly long gone and not returning, but if this newer Rua can at least regain some decent stamina he might be able to do a bit of damage in the light heavyweight division.
  • With one or two more fights under his belt, Rousimar Palhares is going to be tough for any fighter to defeat. Palhares ground-game skills are unquestioned and when he learns to build-up his cardio and get a bit more striking he will be a monster.
  • Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle didn’t disappoint and really got the night of to a great start. Davis continues to look solid and showed that he can still stay composed and work his gameplan after taking some tough blows.
  • Once again, Denis Kang disappoints and drops a fight that he was in complete control of. Kang left his neck exposed and paid the prize as Alan Belcher took advantage after getting worked over for eight minutes. Why Belcher even mentioned the words “title shot” in his post-fight interview is beyond me.
  • I’m pretty certain that is probably the last time we will see Jeremy Horn in the UFC, unless they are needing a last minute replacement for someone.
  • Why the UFC decided to award the Coleman-Rua fight with co-honors for Fight of the Night is a big mystery.

I was the only one in our fightcamp who picked Belcher to upset Kang, even though i picked the winners of every fight except the main event, i still got a pretty low score on the playground. I missed every single method and round giving me a 5 for every fight and the only one i missed (Franklin vs Hendo) was also the hot bout. Tough event for me this time around, but ive had worse, not a terrible start for the new season..

    • Dr J says:

      welcome to my world, LOL.

I’ve had the best pick percentage the past 3 seasons but usually only 5 pts per fight because I miss the round and style. I just happened to put it all together for this event.

pick the winners and it will all even out by the end of the season.

  2. richard says:

thats crazy bvrasp to only miss one fight and get a pretty low score

    • bvrasp says:

Yea i know man, pretty messed up hehe, but overall we did pretty good in this event, Doc killed it and MAD was back to his usual good form. Kind of a disappointing event though.. not too bad, but nothing spectacular, did you watch it online Richard?

      • richard says:

i seen the first 2 rounds of the davis fight then it got cut off.did u watch it online?

        • bvrasp says:

oh really? thats sucks man, i put up that link but i didnt actually watch it there. I watched it on the TVU player, you should download that, its real easy ill help you out if you want.

Download the player from tvunetworks.com and install it, then theres a channel called MMATV it plays all the event and other stuff too.

        • richard says:

some sites asked for the tvu player.

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

hey B did you have a problem with the audio too? i watched the first two and a half fights at 3:00pm and everything was fine but when i watched the rest at 10:00 there was no sound… its cool though me and my brother-in-law did our own Rogan and Goldy lol. it was cool i just rambled on about everything besides the fights and my brother-in-law pissed himself and almost passed out at every submission attempt, you wouldnt have even known there was no sound LOL.

        • bvrasp says:

RJ, thats weird cuz Kansas was saying there was no sound too, there was sound on mine tho, i tihnk there was a short break for like 10 sec where the sound dropped out then it came back. Also like 5-6 times the picture froze for like 10 sec or so.. cant really complain though hehe

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

huh weird, i think just some people lucked out with sound because when i was watching at 3:00 i noticed a few people on the chat bitchin that they had no sound. oh well free is free, and frees cool with me.

  3. bvrasp says:

Doc i told you Kang would choke… no pun intended :)

    • Dr J says:

yeah I know. In the back of my mind I had a feeling that Kang would drop this fight because that’s been his style lately. He looked solid until he got choked out though but it doesn’t matter unless you pick up the win.

  4. MMAKansas says:

So here’s a question, everyone is talking about the man who used to be Shogun Rua, but what about the man who used to be Rich Franklin?

Where’s he at? I haven’t seen the MW Champ in a long time….

    WHAT’S NEXT FOR MR. FRANKLIN???

    • bvrasp says:

Kansas i dont think anything happened to Franklin, he tried man, he just had no answer for Hendos takedowns, on the feet it was pretty back and forth but the wrestling made the difference. The only thing that bugged me was in the 3rd round Franklin had already lost the fight and he didnt really take any risks to try and get that KO. He did way too much jabbing in the 3rd, winning the round just wasnt enough to get the job done.

Anyways.. i think the reason you might think that is because Rich has been fighting much tougher guys these days. When he was the champ i wont say he fighted cans because they were good fighters, but they werent the best in the world like hes fighting now.

      • bvrasp says:

Oh how about that 30-27 for Franklin judge? lol wtf was that about? they say dont leave it in the judges hands, but for ***** sake thats just ridiculous man. Even Franklin was visibly disturbed by that, theres always variation in the judges but did this guy even watch the fight man?

Seriously, where do they find these guys man? its unfair for the fighters, its unfair for the fans and it makes the promotion and the commission both look like jackasses. I dont know what the solution is, but they have to do something about this man, its embarrasing.

its not just people on this site the whole mma community except you thought that shogun looked bad very bad.

      • bvrasp says:

Not trying to rub salt in the wound Kansas, but i thought Shogun looked bad in that fight too. Ofcourse the conditioning like everyone has already said was the problem. I think it was the 2nd round when Shogun was just standing in front of Coleman with his hands down. I was really worried when i saw that man, i was yelling at the screen lol. Coleman could barely stand on those toothpick legs a few more leg kicks and it would have been over but i guess Shogun wanted to knock him out or something, very dangerous decision.

Coleman looked great!! for about 30 seconds hehe. Time to hang it up Mark….

        • MMAKansas says:

Yeah well if Wand can get the conditioning thing down, then Shogun can too …. I know he looked gassed 2/3 of the fight, my problem is that no matter what my guys do… you guys have negatives and nothing but that… he didn’t look good but he KO’ed his opponent, yet HE has to make excuses and back peddle while people like us sit here and criticize, rubbing salt… you guys can all jump off a cage for all I care, my boy won, doesn’t matter if it was by split decision, (AHEM HENDO/ ***’s BOY) …. or by KO, pretty or sloppy, obviously he was out of shape and he has time to get that under wraps…

        • bvrasp says:

you take this **** way too personal Kansas, but your right in the end all that matters is the W. The whole performance evaluation thing is probably more about his next fight or his future in the UFC. After Forrest, Shoguns rep took a bit hit, mostly because they didnt think much of Forrest but hes shown that hes a top fighter in the div.

I like Shogun personally and i dont always have negative things to say about him, its just been his past 2 fights. The fact is, win or lose, he hasnt looked good and its clear what he has to work on.

Lets just hope he does it because hes a young kid, all the talent in the world, if he adapts to the UFC he should be on top again.

        • R.J. St.Croix says:

Kansas man dont take it so personal bro, websites like this are meant for keyboard warriors to state facts AND talk sh*t about the guys they wish to be. i was also disappointed with Shoguns last two fights, i was hoping to see the destroyer that we seen in PrideFC but you know as well as i do it was not at all what we were hoping for. its all good, and sh*t happens, maybe hes hit a rut, maybe hes overrated, maybe he’ll come back to dominate the division, or maybe he will fail large and be forgotten, but we are probably not going to figure out any of that until we see him in a few more fights inside the octagon. im going to continue being a Shogun fan and hope to see him back in top form BUT that doesnt mean im going to ignore bad fights, im a fan of Shogun because hes a great fighter but the guy we see in the UFC doesnt seem like the guy we seen in Pride and if hes not going to put forth an effort to stay on top then he needs to stop fighting and make room for someone who will give the effort. maybe they need to reform ChuteBoxe so we can have our band of killers back. hopefully his last two fights will light the fire and give him a reason to get back in the gym and come back badder then ever.

        • MMAKansas says:

Wow the whole group just gang jumped me.. lol… well hey, I will finish this topic with this – W is what matters –
