WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner defended his belt against Donald Cerrone last week in an extremely tough battle that took a toll on both fighters.
Varner retained the title on a split decision victory after the fight was halted early due to an unintentional knee to the head by Cerrone. While Donald Cerrone took the brunt of the abuse early in the fight, Varner was definitely the worse for wear afterwards.
Varner fractured bones in his foot and severely fractured his right index finger. In an interview with Sherdog.com yesterday, Varner revealed the true extent of his injuries.
“I broke my right index metacarpal, completely fractured,” Varner said on Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show on Wednesday. “So I have to get pins put in it [Thursday]. Then I go next week to see my eye doctor to make sure my retina isn’t detached. And if it’s detached it could be a career-ending injury.”
Varner said he was suffering from lack of vision following the illegal knee to the head and know it is apparent why.
Hopefully Varner’s eye injury is not as serious as feared and he can return to competition sometime in the future. If the eye injury does force Varner into retirement, let’s hope that it won’t cause any sort of permanent blindness for him in the future.
