Sam Caplan is reporting that Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz will fight each other on the upcoming Strikeforce fight card this April.
The fight is expected to be formally announced sometime this week during a joint press conference between Strikeforce and new partner Showtime. The April 11 fight card is expected to be the first Strikeforce event on Showtime.
The matchup would realistically take place at middleweight or some catch-weight as it’s unlikely Shamrock could make the 170 lbs. weight limit.
The popular and controversial Diaz last fought this past July under the EliteXC banner against Thomas Denny. Diaz dominated the fight and won via TKO in the second round.
Frank Shamrock has not fought since March of 2008 when he lost his middleweight title to Cung Le in three rounds. Shamrock broke his arm during that fight and although he has been cleared to fight, he has not competed since.
Also rumored to appear on the fight card are Josh Thompson, Gilbert Melendez, Scott Smith, and Benji Radach.

huh? this is kinda weird, i just cant see Diaz (the beanpole he is) packing on the pounds and fighting at 185lbs. but hey you never know right? maybe if he jumps up in weight he might be able to hit a bit harder.
I know. strange matchup for sure. My guess is they might do some kind of catch-weight fight at 175 or 178 or something.
Who knows, maybe shamrock can make 170. Diaz used to fight welterweight, so if Shamrock can make it the could fight there. I just don’t think shamrock could make the cut to 170 personally.
I was reading about this yesterday, i like both these guys but i just dont see Diaz winning this fight man. Frank is no joke man hes probably got the advantage anywhere the fight goes. If Frank can make 170 id like to see him fight GSP, not that he would be the favorite but i think he could have a chance.
Other than that its nice to see Gil Melendez back in action, i dont even remember the last time he fought, feels like a while ago though. This event is still a little ways off but ya im looking forward to it.
Doc, what you think about this Roy Jones promoted show coming up? I dont like the idea of having to sit through boxing matches to watch MMA but is it good or bad for MMA? Is he trying to jump on the MMA bandwagon or just trying to reinvigorate boxing? Maybe a bit of both?
One things for sure, theres something for everyone on this event. Roy Jones is fighting so that will draw all the boxing fans, we got Big country vs the snowman so the big boys will be throwing down.
Then Seth Petruzelli is taking on Richards boy Doug Marshall that could be interesting. Gatties can also tune in because i heard Bobby Laqshley is fighting lol.
It’ll be interesting for sure, but I think any time you see these “cross-event” promotions, it’s all about the money. At the end of the day, all theses guys are promoters and they are simply trying to draw as much money as they can for their events.
The boxing guys really don’t care about MMA and the MMA guys dont really care about boxing. What they do have in common is they both care about the revenues and they see an opportunity for a “larger score” then if they promoted on their own.
I really think its more of an experiment than anything else.
oh boy… i dont know what to think about diaz vs shamrock…. does diaz my boy have a shot?
So its official, catch weight of 179, all i can say is Diaz is a warrior man since he left the UFC hes been looking great, going undefeated except for the 1st round stoppage vs Noons because of a cut. I think the UFC was kind of holding him back man, maybe it was his own attitude but still the fact remains hes getting much bigger fights outside the UFC.
I don’t like it, fights like this can trigger a psychological break in a fighters future confidence and ability to pull the trigger if they get wiped out brutally by the larger opponent, I don’t like freak show mentality type shows, and I think it should be a SANCTIONED EVEN WEIGHT FIGHT, not to take anything from the fighters, I love em’ both, but I hate this kind of set up. Reminds me of Wand V Cro Cop all over again – I didn’t even like it when B.J. did that stuff, man it doesn’t prove a lot, it just wears out the smaller competitor or diminishes the stock of the larger fighter severely. If shamrock loses to bean pole, what then.. I mean yeah they might weigh in around the same, but we all know that when hydration takes place, Shamrock is gonna come in at least 10-15 pounds larger… oh well, guess if they are determined to do it, we might as well pop some corn and watch it… lol
i have such a hard on when i heard about this fight, frank shamrock is a warrior same with diaz and they both like to put on a show.
I agree with Kansas on this point, but i also agree with Richard lol, those guys are gonna throw down man. Just imagine the trash talking and bad blood thats gonna develop, im definately checking the presser on that one lol.
Lets face it guys, hype is important for big fights, look at WWE, they made a whole business around trash talk and they dont even need to have a contest after, just more smack talk lol.
Well.. here’s a question I haven’t asked in a while, which sucks that I have to ask it… WHAT’S NEXT FOR MY BOY WANDERLEI? Middleweight I suppose, but WHO does he fight? Leben? That risks either fighter getting KO’ed, which isn’t good because they are both popular sluggers… Franklin? He just lost, he has been down due to an eye injury and I don’t think he’ll be ready by June… Hendo? Possible… a third fight would make it a trilogy, but a loss for Silva would possibly end his career… but the UFC doesn’t care about that right.. so we may very well see Hendo V Wand in June… another thought would be throwing him in against Bisping… that would be intriguing… thoughts anyone?
there are a lot of entertaining fight s left for wandy in any weight class he goes in but i would actually like to see him verse LEBAN OR FRANKLIN?OR EVEN HENDERSON.
