A fight that has been rumored and talked about for a few weeks has now become official.

Current UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn will put his belt on that line this August at UFC 101 against Kenny Florian.

BJ Penn last fought at UFC 94 where he lost to current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre via TKO in the fourth round. Penn’s last fight at lightweight was against Sean Sherk at UFC 84 last May. Since his return to the UFC, Penn is undefeated at lightweight having beaten Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, and Sherk.

The challenger Florian has won his last six fights and has not lost since his last shot at the lightweight title against then champion Sean Sherk at UFC 64.

UFC 101 is currently scheduled for August 8 in Philadelphia, PA. Other fights rumored for the fight card include Forrest Griffin vs. Thiago Silva, Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellegrino, and Thiago Tavares vs. Melvin Guillard.

Well… Kenflo is riding a wave man.. he could very well pose an issue for our boy BJ.. problem is that BJ’s striking is really good, and Kenflo has a reach advantage but thats about it for striking, stand up I go with Penn overall, ground game, they are both good, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go down there, and it’s a coin toss with BJ out maneuvering Kenflo…

This is gonna come down to where BJ’s head is at fight time, and we wont know that until we get there… right now, I think BJ has his little girl, legacy, and other things not related to UFC 101 on his mind, if he doesn’t “de-clutter” and prepare accordingly he could get caught on the ground or standing up.. I hope he has the mental toughness to accept he is a light weight, and move on from his recent beating…

i fully agree with you about it being BJs fight to win/lose. Penn is just a bit better at all things MMA then Kenny, most likely you can give the cardio to Kenny but you gotta give the chin to BJ so things still look to favor Penn a bit. Penn better put his work in for this one because a highly motivated, hungry Kenny Florian is dangerous for any lightweight.
