- Brock Lesnar easily dispatched Frank Mir last night and unified the UFC heavyweight title. Lesnar possesses one “skill” that Frank Mir couldn’t overcome: brute strength. Brock caught Mir in a headlock/armlock and sat on it through the first round and a similar wrist lock in the second round. Watching Frank Mir try to escape from Lesnar’s single hand hold, told the whole story. Lesnar’s physical strength is impressive.
- For what it’s worth, I was impressed with Frank Mir’s performance despite the loss. Mir was active and and kept looking for submissions during the first half of round one. Mir also was able to survive through the second half of round one where a lot of fighters probably would have been out with the strikes Brock was landing. It’s good to see Mir back in shape and concentrating on fighting and I look forward to seeing him in upcoming fights.
- Personally, I still don’t think Brock Lesnar has improved his MMA game much and still lacks many rudimentary skills that all other top MMA athletes possess today. Lesnar has wrestling and strength and that is all. He doens’t have a good striking game and he has absolutely no ground game. Lesnar sat still and didn’t look to improve his position on the ground for nearly 4 minutes in the first round; but, then again, he didn’t really need to as his strength allowed it to stay put and keep Mir from moving. Mir had the skills and technique, just not the strength. Will a fighter with equal strength, say a Shane Carwin, be able to deal with Lesnar’s grip? Only time will tell.
- Dana White and Co. have to be getting increasingly frustrated with Brock Lesnar and the way he portrays himself during “official” UFC duties. MMA has had “heels” before, but never one who embraced and fostered the stigma as much as Lesnar is doing. I guess you can take the fighter away from professional wrestling, but you can’t take the professional wrestling away from the fighter. For the UFC’s marquee event, UFC 100, I’m sure White loved Lesnar trying to leave the pre-fight press conference early on three separate occassions. I’m sure White loved Lesnar flipping the crowd off and intentionally bashing the UFC’s largest corporate sponsor, Bud Lite. Lesnar is fighting to get a paycheck and Zuffa will continute to provide it, but hopefully they are starting to sour on Lesnar as the face of the promotion. In a post-fight interview with ESPN, Lesnar apologized to fans for his actions and to Bud Light for his comments – you can be sure this was a direct order from Zuffa.
- Georges St. Pierre continues to prove that he is easily the best in the world at 170 lbs. With three commission officers watching GSP like a hawk, there can be no possible “excuse” for GSP’s domination of Thiago Alves
- If you still are impressed by the way St. Pierre dominates his opponents or with the ease that St. Pierre takes his opponents to the ground, stop. Just stop it. Stop being impressed, because with GSP it’s just commonplace.
- I really hope Zuffa and the MMA crowd stop trying to push GSP into a fight at middleweight, something he clearly doesn’t want to do. There is nothing wrong with St. Pierre wanting to concentrate on his weight class and work towards his legacy of being the best MMA welterweight of all time.
- Oh boy, I can’t begin to say how much I enjoyed watching Dan Henderson absolutely crush Michael Bisping. Bisping clearly was a bit intimidated or anxious for this fight as he was very jumpy and unwilling to engage in the first round. Henderson continues to load up and look to land his big right hand and was finally able to do so for the first time in the UFC. That right hand made Henderson famous in PrideFC and has now done the same for the UFC-centric fanbase.
- I loved the diving, full weight “hulk smash” Hendo threw at Bisping’s face to finish the match off as well. He didn’t settle for a downward strike from the top, he went with the full, flying bomb.
- In my opinion, Alan Belcher won his fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama last night. I had Belcher winning 29-28 in what proved to be a solid fight. How judges like Adelaide Baird continue to get named as judges for MMA events is beyond me. This isn’t the first time Adelaide has pulled out some crazy scorecards and giving a 30-27 nod to Akiyama last night is ridiculous. The fight was close, but in no way was it a 30-27.
- Jon Fitch didn’t do much to rebuild his status last night against Paulo Thiago. Thiago showed how good of a BJJ practitioner he is and impressed me a bit, but I still don’t think he is long for the UFC.
- Mark Coleman got his victory over Stephan Bonnar but looked just as grizzled doing it. Not good news for Bonnar who is now in a tough spot, but Coleman didn’t show any more stamina or techniques that warrant continued exposure in the UFC.
- With each and every time I hear him speak, I continue to despise Mike Goldberg more and more. It’s hard to believe that a guy who has been doing UFC events for years is so unknowledgeable and so infuriating to listen to as a commentator.

he won the title of Heavy weight champion. its too heavy opussssss.
I hate Brock as much as the next guy, girl, child, etc. but after seeing Frank Mir’s face almost immediately turn into a smurf-like creature, I realized that there is so much more to Lesnar’s power than those who are not actually in the cage with him, do not understand. I don’t see any heavyweight (in the UFC) beating Brock anytime soon. I personally think he would beat both Velasquez and Carwin at this point.
Someone here said it best, that GSP is the newer, boring version of Matt Hughes and I can’t help but agree. I used to watch him in amazement, much like Anderson Silva, to see how dynamic and creative he can be in the octagon. But lately I’m losing more amd more interest in watching him manhump his opponents and cutting them into bloodiness with smothering headbutts. I think there were a few moments in the fight where, had it been any other fighter than GSP, the referee would have stepped in and let them stand back up.
Many might think I’m crazy but I would absolutely be thrilled to watch GSP fight Anthony Johnson.
about Brock
Like i said, its not about having a BJJ game for a guy like Brock, it ws just a matter of tweaking his wrestling for MMA. He just needs a few safe positions and a few things to worry about (dont let him get guard etc.) and he can overcome the huge BJJ defecit. Id like to see him fight Fedor, but i think its safe to say that it would be Fedors toughest test ever. Im not a Brock fan, but if you dont respect what he brings to the table your kidding yourself. That scarf hold he put on Mir was awesome, then the strength he showed conrtolling Mirs wrist before the end of the fight was just the nail on the coffin. You might think its boring, but guys are in there to win and get paid and be the champ, its not like he was running around scared to engage, he played his game and came out on top, i give him all the respect a UFC HW champ deserves.
about GSP
I can see why people are saying hes the new Matt Hughes and as a huge fan of Hughes i dont really see that as a bad thing. Ya he used to be more exciting before he discovered his amazing wrestling abilities. Cant you guys see the strategy in taking a guy down at will and beating on him? We have all seen in the past that hes a dangerous striker, but why would you give your opponent a chance to land that one shot that can end the whole fight? or cut you and take your belt and your money and your legacy?
Very similar to the Lesnar situation, you wanna stand up with Lesnar or GSP? simple, stop the takedown, if you cant then dont complain about it your facing a superior wrestler deal with it.
My comment was on another thread BV.. lol … you could have entitled this “TO KANSAS” SHUT UPPP!!!.. lol –
You points are all correct, the point MOST vivid and correct would be the point that “Ya he used to be more exciting before he discovered his amazing wrestling abilities”…
GSP is not that exciting to me, but hey he’s getting bank $400k to fight is great, and I bet he will get a mil to fight A Silva-
Ya i know it was another thread Kansas, the reason i said that wasnt to bust your balls.. its because Amir mentioned it in the post above mine, you think im trying to take hidden shots at you? lol
It’s obvious that the reason Brock is so hated is because he is so physically imposing and gifted…a unique genetic specimen almost. Of course, jealousy plays a huge part. Most of these guys have trained BJJ their entire lives and here comes this overgrown freakshow with no BJJ training, and he makes them look bad. So the age-old question is asked again, can size and power neutralize Brazilian Jui Jitsu? For Brock Lesnar, it can.
I still think that he hasn’t been really caught yet. There was a moment or two in this fight where Mir landed a few strikes to his face and he started to cover up immediately and turn away. I won’t give him the respect of a true UFC heavyweight champion until I see him face some real adversity, recover from it, and still manage to overcome that adversity and win the fight.
THAT, is what currently separates him from other champions and at this point, Fedor is the only man walking this planet that has seen and done it all.
Personally, I would have more interest watching him fight another physically imposing striker (Kongo) as opposed to a wrestler (Velasquez). There’s no way Cain will outwrestle or overpower Brock…but even though Kongo has problems with wrestlers in general, I think his size technique would make an interesting fight.
amir i know u know ur **** buddy but, yeah kongo was catching cain all day but in the end his wrestling was to much but he couldnt finish lesnar can finish i doubt it would even a fight.but i did see lesnar hurt in this fight when mir gave him that knee before lesnar took him down for the last time i think that hurt lesnar really bad.but in the end all i have to say is f@uck lesnar.
ugh i cant stand brock lesner
i can understand if you don’t like lesnar for his attitude, but the man is a hell of a fighter. he’s only been training mma for 2 years max and he’s 4-1 in the ufc with wins over couture and mir. he’s going to dominate the h/w division for the next couple of years….deal with it. the vanilla gorilla will eat up the ufc competition until he fights fedor, and fedor didn’t impress me at all for the first 4 1/2 minutes against arlovsky.
