With another dominating performance at UFC 100, thoughts naturally progress to who might next challenge Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title.
UFC President Dana White has verbally confirmed that the winner of the Martin Kampmann vs. Mike Swick fight at UFC 103 will determine the No. 1 welterweight contender and the next to fight St. Pierre.
“Wherever we go, fans know UFC delivers great fights,” UFC president Dana White said. “Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann could be fight of the night at UFC 103 because the winner takes on Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title.”
UFC 103 takes place this September and it is unknown when the next welterweight title fight will take place. St. Pierre injured his groin at UFC 100 and the extent of the injury and recovery time needed is not known at this point.

ok so i think nether stand much of a chance at beating the champ but my question is, who can put up the better fight? i think Swicks hyper speed striking style gets him taken down and mauled and i dont know if Kampmann has anything to offer GSP. i say bring on Jake Shields.
I say neither puts up a good fight and GSP blows though them both like a hot knife through butter
gsp is turning into a lay and prey guy if he doesnt win in the first couple rounds he just out wrestles u.did anyone one else notice how every single time someone touched gsp there was a guy wiping him off with a towel.
You’re clearly a GSP hater. You went from saying he just lays on his opponent, to that GSP is probably cheating. Any real MMA fan can appreciate GSP’s style, his speed, and how he can obtain those takedowns. And it’s not just his takedowns, its how he passes guard and pounds his opponent. Not only that, but his striking is superb as well, in EVERY one of his fights he drops his opponent standing up. Just because he had 2 decisions in his last 5 fights, it doesn’t mean he just lays on his opponent. He dominates them in every aspect. GSP’s fights are very exciting, there’s always action. Unlike Anderson Silva’s last two fights where they were both just dancing around eachother.
I say he lays on them like a we blanket and dryhumps rounds 3-5 to win via DH – that’s “DRY HUMP” – lolz
I see why people are complaining, it definately more exciting to see a guy knocking people out than it is watching a guy wrestle someone to a decision or even pound them out after grinding them on the ground for a while.
Thats what people said about Royce when he first started fighting in the US, no standup game, boring ground work, because he was in fights lasting like 40min on the ground the whole time, but in the end he was the victor.
In that sense guys like Royce and hughes were 1 trick ponys, but GSP can strike too, i think hes proved that and i dont think anyone will argue that. The fact that he DOESNT stand up and trade with guys is all about strategy, put yourself in the best position to win the fight.
Lets break it down, cuz im tired of people crying about it.
STANDING UP
1. The better striker will have the advantage, but anyone can land that one lucky shot to end the fight, especially if hes willing to eat a few and catch you in an exchange. THATS IT.
BLANKET
1. If the guys a striker, all his skill, talent and chance to win the fight is GONE, hes at almost 0% to put you in any danger from his back.
2. Your on top of him, octogon control, if nothing happens, you automatically win the round for dominant position.
3. You rest and conserve energy while he struggles to escape and is expending energy
4. His BJJ game is neutralized, much smaller chance of reversing you or submitting you because your not trying to advance position, you have him in a bad spot and your going to keep him there.
5. Most importantly, although he cant hurt you much from his back, you can pound on him with punches to score points, knees to hurt him and elbows to cut him which could also award you the fight.

So tell me people, how can you not see the advantage there? the point is to win the fight, entertainment comes 2nd, this is a contest not a circus, if its all about entertainment watch WWE or something.
If you wanna see guys bang, you still got tons of other fighters out there to watch, McFedries, Leben, Cote, Neer, etc.. these are guys who walk into punches and take risks to try to get KOs. I LOVE THESE GUYS! but they will never be champs because the champ has to win consistently.
I disagree.. so quit preaching and I will quit crying or whatever you likened my comments to….
GSP needs to THRILL otherwise he will just be another wrestler.. period. He is a champion no doubt, but while this is a sport it is ALSO entertainment, I don’t shell out nearly $50 for wrestling matches, WWE, Boxing, or even K-1 … I want to watch well rounded MMA and GSP HAS it but isn’t using it.. on and GIVE ME A BREAK on the Gracie comparisons, GSP is NOWHERE near as great as Royce, he is a Canadian so of course all the Canadian and north eastern blue staters on this site hug his French nuttts but other than his athleticism and wrestling, he is becoming a one trick pony.
I don’t buy his cards, and don’t hunt down links to watch them live on the web, bc I already know how it went, and there are NO highlight reel moments in ANY of his last 2 fight so I am annoyed by him, and I am NOT impressed by his performance.
Thanks for the BREAKDOWN BV of the difference between a “striker” and a “blanket” … although it was quite juvenile of you to think your little “break down” would stop people from crying about it, what did you expect to accomplish by the above comment.. seriously? It’s just a display of your arrogant thought that we don’t GET IT??? WE DO GET IT AND IT IS QUITE BORING LATELY.
Kansas, i dunno where to start, you made a lot of points, so here goes..
The first thing you said was you disagree, im not exactly sure what your disagreeing with because by then end, your basically saying im being arrogant for stating what everyone already knows. So if you “get it” and its rhetorical nonsense in your opinion, why would you say you disagree? anyways…
“GSP needs to THRILL otherwise he will just be another wrestler.. period. He is a champion no doubt, but while this is a sport it is ALSO entertainment, I don’t shell out nearly $50 for wrestling matches, WWE, Boxing, or even K-1″
-not much i can say about that, its your opinion, i agree in the sense that its both. The question is which comes first, sport or entertainment, guess it depends on the fan, but one things for sure, to GSP its the sport and i dont blame him.
” I want to watch well rounded MMA and GSP HAS it but isn’t using it”
-tell me you didnt just say that… ok im not gonna comment on that one, you might want to re watch those past 2 fights your upset about and re-evaluate that statement hehe.
“GIVE ME A BREAK on the Gracie comparisons, GSP is NOWHERE near as great as Royce, he is a Canadian so of course all the Canadian and north eastern blue staters on this site hug his French nuttts but other than his athleticism and wrestling, he is becoming a one trick pony.”
- I never said he was as great as Royce, i was trying to show a comparison of fighters who have been chastised for keeping the fight on the ground. The fact that i said Royce and GSP in the same sentence just set you off on a racist Tirade lol. Suddenly im a GSP nuthugger, even though i picked Hughes over GSP all 3 times and BJ over GSP both times lol. The guys an amazing fighter, top 5 p4p on anyones list and when i give him the respect he deserves im a nut hugger? with the racial slurs, sounds like your just hating cuz he dominated your boy YOU ALVES NUT HUGGER!!!! LOL
-umm.. what else.. oh the final stanza! i have to say this was my favorite Kansas hehe. You say you “get it” but from the comments your making it seems to me that you STILL dont get it. In your entire post you never mentioned one thing about STRATEGY, my entire post was about STRATEGY, and without a good STRATEGY you dont win the fight plain and simple.
-Now explain to me why you think GSP should have stood up with Alves Kansas? wheres the STRATEGY behind it? wheres the intelligence of standing up with a striker when you totally outclass him in wrestling? I guess the GREAT Royce was an idiot for taking guys down, just not entertaining enough.
You’re an idiot. How the hell doesn’t he thrill? He almost always DROPS his opponent standing up in the fight atleast once. Thiago Alves, Jon Fitch,Matt Hughes, Josh Koschek. Or he brutally ground and pounds them out, BJ Penn, Matt Serra. He dominates his opponent in every aspect of fighting.
you think Thiago Alves is an awesome striker right? Well in the fight GSP was outstriking him. You think Josh Koschek and Matt Hughes are a great wrestler right? Well guess what, GSP outwrestled him too.
You clearly are just one of those kids who just want to see a brawl instead of appreciate actual mixed martial arts. People who can appreciate it, can appreciate GSP’s striking, mixed into explosive takedown, swiftly passing guard, and pounding out his opponent. Just because 2 out of his last 5 fights have been decision, it doesn’t make him “boring” In his decisions, there is always action, there is never no dancing around for minutes straight like Anderson Silva, there punches being thrown constantly.
im “crying”cuz i think gsp’s game plan from the start of both his last fights was to smother them like a “wet blanket” which is fine if ur losing a fight but not at the freaking start and finish the same way,bj was out of shape but alves could of went on another couple rounds,im not saying for him to “bang it out”but at least try to finish
Richard, ya it was his strategy to use his wrestling because he knew he would outclass Alves. I believe it was his plan to finish the fight but thats easier said than done man. Did you notice how Alves would keep getting up from his back? pure power man, even in the later rounds Alves still had the gas and ability to get back to his feet, i found that pretty amazing, GSP probably did too. I think thats why he couldnt finish, or didnt want to take the chance to try and finish because Alves was game right to the end. He just fought a superior wrestler and he needs to get his game up.
im all for using strategy but im saying that i dont think gsp would of got koed i think there was at least a couple of times he had alves rocked and never really capitalized.
Pierre isn’t going to finish fights anymore in my opinion.. he’s just preserving his spot at the top as long as possible, to make as much money as possible.
For GSP, it’s not about the love of the game anymore, or proving how tough he is, he knows he can get knocked out EASILY by a guy like Alves, heck if Serra can do it….
so he wont even entertain the IDEA of FIGHTING …. the temptation to take the SAFE and EASIER way out is too much, he will blanket smother and win another big pay day… that’s who he is now.
hehe Kansas i agree with that entire post, just with a bit of a different tone to it.
He could definately get Easily KOed by Alves just like anyone else in the division, Alves is a beast with great thai skills and like he learned from Serra, the sun even shines on a dogs azz sometimes.
So because he was facing a dangerous striker, he wouldnt even entertain the idea of striking, when he can take the safe and easy route to victory and a huge payday.
well said Kansas lol.
Well put and i agree
Anyone can get knocked out. If you were in GSP’s position would you stand and strike with Alves? If you had the great wrestling abilities of GSP would you stand and strike with someone who is an expert Muay Thai? Honestly its all about using your brain to fight. Yes i said it, FIGHT. Yes GSP will finish fights, out of his last 5 fights, only 2 have been decision. Jon Fitch and Alves, and both fights were action packed. GSP dominated them both in every aspect. Yes, GSP even dominated Alves on his feet, and even dropped him. Alves could barely land any hits.
i think some of the people claiming GSP is boring are a bit frustrated that no one can hang with him and they dont get why he didnt finish the fight even though he was clearly dominating the entire fight, the thing is he was dominating because he wasnt making stupid mistakes or over doing it trying to finish. look at what happen when he did get a bit sloppy on the ground, Thiago ended up on top and St.Pierre had to try and avoid getting hit, holding someone in your guard and avoiding damage is NOT how you win fights so why put your self in that position if you dont have to. GSP has the ability to fight his fight when ever he wants and sometimes “his fight” is not the best way to finish the guy hes fighting, but thats no reason to go “Chris Leben” on him and possibly get KOed and lose his title.
Kansas and Richard, ok i rewatched the fight guys, WOW! im glad we had this discussion because thats what made me watch it again. This was a great fight man! while not a slugfest, it was a high paced 5 rounds and we got to see the best of both these guys.
Its clear to me now, this was an INCREDIBLY versatile fight, there was more standup than you guys are making it out to be. In fact, George won the standup here, at one point he landed a superman punch leg kick combo LOL, ive never had someone do that to me, or seen it happen to anyone, just shows the imagination Georges has. At one point he even dropped Alves and jumped right on him and pounded away, its amazing that Thiago went the sidtance. The way he setup the takedown with strikes was genius, not like Coleman or Lesnar where they just bull rush and rely on sheer power.
I defy you to find one point in the fight where GSP was not working on the feet, in the clinch or on the ground, he was steadily beating on Alves the entire fight. He worked his BJJ just as much as his wrestling in this fight and he took Alves back 3 times and passed his guard to full mount twice, there was no blanket work. I could not find one second where i thought GSP wasnt doing enough, i think he tried his best and threw everything but the kitchen sink at Thiago and you just couldnt finish him.
This fight said alot more about Alves than GSP considering we never saw him in a 5 round fight before, forget about swick or kampman, Alves has the best chance to beat GSP hands down! the guy was amazing in this fight and i pity the next guy who has to face Alves.
its just gsp made it seem so easy but for sure its not
Georges St-Pierre is becoming the best pound for pound fighter in the world forget all this he was playing safe **** , he won and thats it. he is very entertaining to watch and he deserves his respect so if u think he doesnt deserve it u go try to do half of what he did in UFC and then talk.
alves was his greatest fight bt he dominated him still so… not much bad things u can say on him.
i know people are starting to really pipe up about GSP and his “blanket” tactics and they are somewhat right, BUT it seems the haters are overstating it. not once do i remember the ref threatening to stand it up or telling him he needs to work, and did you see Alves’ face after? Fitch’s face? BJ’s? St.Pierre didnt make a mess out of those guys by laying on them. there is a reason GSP stood and KOed Hughes and took Alves down and beat him up, make the great grappler stand and fight where hes got not much of a chance at beating you and take the striker down where hes got not much of a shot at beating you, makes perfect sense to me. Alves even said before the fight “hes not gonna beat me on our feet, and if he tries to take me down i got some surprises for him” so he knew what the deal was and there was nothing he could do about it, thats why i like GSP because even if you know his whole gameplan you still cant do anything about it. the haters are going to hate no matter what so im not really going to talk anyone into or out of anything, i will just say hate away but get used to him because i dont see anyone taking his title away any time soon.
im gonna have to says this never thought i would but gsp is booooooooooorinnnnn!!
GSP is the man. He studies his opponents and figures out their strengths and weaknesses. I sometimes wonder why some uninformed mma bloggers come on here and say bad things about people like gsp being not so great and such when you get men like alves calling him the number one pd for pd fighter. Actually in mma weekly this week gsp is the worlds number one lb for lb fighter. I saw it coming the first time i saw him fight. Im not mma but im 5th degree black belt karate, so i know fighting. Gsp is fantastic standing as well as wrestling, and being the worlds best lb for lb is well deserved. The haters can hate but they have no substance.
the only argument the haters have left is “GSP is boring” and i get it. most people wanna see brutal KO’s and out of nowhere submissions and so do i for the most part, but part of the reason we dont see it a lot from St.Pierre can be attributed to his opponents, Fitch took a beating, BJ took a beating, and Alves took a beating, but to say GSP should have finished all of them is kind of discounting them all isnt it? the welter weight division is stacked with very tough guys and so far GSP has made them all look like they didnt belong in the same cage but people still want more from him. it seems like when someone is on ther way up everyone loves them but once they get to the top people start to hate, and the bigger the gap between GSP and the rest of the field gets the more haters he’ll have.
