Perhaps the biggest news to come out of today’s UFC media conference call was the announcement of a new main event for UFC 103 this September.
Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson were originally announced as the fight card’s main event in Dallas, TX. The fight is a rematch that Franklin specifically wanted after losing a close to decision to Henderson at UFC 93 this January.
Instead, Franklin will now face off against newly signed Vitor Belfort. Belfort was scheduled to fight on the Affliction: Trilogy card that was cancelled completely and now will set his sights on a return to the UFC.
UFC president Dana White cited fan reaction as a reason for the change of opponent for Franklin.
Fans didn’t like it, so we changed it.
According to White, Dan Henderson is now definitely next in line for a title shot and rematch against Anderson Silva. A potential date for the middleweight showdown is uncertain until Silva completes his fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 101.
