Jon Jones’ manager has decided to file a formal protest with the Nevada State Athletic Commission over his disqualification loss against Matt Hamill at the TUF 10 Finale.
Hearing Jones’ comments both in the cage immediately after the decision, and during the post-even press conference, it appeared that Jones was fine with the decision and didn’t have any problems with it. According to his management team, Jones still feels that way, but his manager has decided to go ahead and appeal the decision.
Let’s be clear, Jon is not “unhappy” he feels as all things happen for a reason. We are protesting the L because we felt that Jon’s opponent could not effectively communicate why he could not continue.
The rules state that an intentional foul and that the fighter cannot continue based on injury sustained from the foul. Hamill could not contnue due to a broken shoulder.
Jon should have been deducted a point for the accidental illegal blow. Matt should have been treated like we treat the Brazilians and given 5 minutes to regroup and offered a translator so the ref could make the right call and understand Matt could not continue due to his shoulder injury not the blow.
This should be a NC for both fighters but not a loss. Hammil continued with an injured Shoulder and only complained once the action was stopped (warrior) but the fight was stopped based on the shoulder injury in our opinion.
In this case, I completely agree with his manager and think he should file an appeal.
In fact, in my TUF 10 recap I basically said the same exact thing his manager said. Hamill was not unable to continue because of the elbow strikes, he was unable to continue because of the shoulder injury he suffered during the takedown.
I don’t expect the NSAC to overturn the decision, and I’m pretty sure that Jones and his camp don’t either, but I have no problem with them appealing the decision in hopes of getting the only loss of of his record.

Yeah you know I wanted to be in Hamil’s corner for this one because I don’t like fouls being used in MMA – really – but I have to agree, it should be appealed, and rightly overturned into a no contest. IMO.
IMO the fight should be a TKO win for Jones, had there been ANY other reason for the action to be stopped and Hamill couldnt continue a TKO win would have been the ONLY outcome but because the Hamill couldnt continue after a break for a foul they called it a DQ. the thing that concerns me is that the outcome was mishandled AGAIN. over the last few months we have seen quite a few situations where the judges and refs have made a bad call, the sport is going to start losing legitimacy if the officials cant get there stuff together. the audience NEEDS to be able to trust that the officials are going to make the right calls way more often then they do or else people are going to feel like there favorite fighters are not getting a fair shake when every time they lose a close one. i understand the officials have a tough job but they still need to be on top of things at all times, if they cant handle the task then they need to step down and allow someone else to do it.
Doc, Kansas, RJ
Hear me out for a second, im taking the contrary position even though i picked Jones and i like him and he completely destroyed Hamill that night.
Doc, your saying he couldnt continue because of the shoulder injury and he admitted it, i just rewatched the ending of the fight and interview afterwards. Hamill never says that his shoulder caused the end of the fight, he says it got injured and he was fighting with one arm. To me that says he wasnt quitting, guys break their hands and feet all the time in fights which is physically worse than separating your shoulder (not in terms of pain though). Its pretty common for guys to fight with broken bones and tough through it sometimes even winning, so just because the guy got hurt that doesnt mean that ended the fight.
I personally think it was the BEATING Jones put on his face for like a whole minute landing huge shots and elbows man. All he had to do was keep on beating on Matt and he would have gotten that stoppage, he wasnt even defending himself.
BUTTTTTT!!!!
He threw the illegal blows, 2 DEVASTATING elbows to the face of a guy who wasnt even covering up. You dont think thats what ended the fight???? watch it again man, just because he wasnt asleep doesnt mean he wasnt beaten senseless. You guys are saying he should have WON the fight by ending it with an illegal blow? LOL think about it for a second.. what is this? like Chuck vs Vernon White eyepoke KO? naw man, you shouldnt be able to win a fight with the final blow being illegal.
Why wasnt he communicating you ask? i dunno maybe because he got his head bashed in??
—> Ask yourself this question would we even be talking about his shoulder if the illegal blows didnt happen?
yeah you have some very valid points. i watched the video you posted and i did notice something, Maz calls off the fight without any communication between him and Hamill (well within his right to do) so im gonna have to say that the outcome may be the right one. im still not 100% how i feel about it but re watching it does shed some new light on it.
ya i know what you mean RJ, thats the way i saw it, but you notice i didnt say what i thought the decision should be. To be safe i would probably say NC but its definatly not an easy one to call.
When your dealing with a deaf fighter, certain accomodations need to be made, just like is done for a fighter who doesn’t speak Japanese in Dream, or English in Strikeforce – or UFC ..
heres a link for the fight, you really think it was his shoulder?
http://mixedmartialartvideos.com/jon-jones-vs-matt-hamill-video-tuf-10-finale/
i think there is no question if jones would of kept it clean he was gonna win but he didnt shoulder or no shoulder the dude did more than one illegal elbow.
whats up with overeem on the banner he blows!!!!!!
I think the picture is missing his needle.. but otherwise it’s pretty standard “overeem” man.. Shogun whipped that guy TWICE and he is clearly stronger-bigger-leaner.. lol just shows you his skillset is soooo limited… and his chin is even more limited.
AND Badr Hari whooped him good last weekend in the K-1 world GP lol.
p.s. if you didnt get to see the K-1 GP you missed some good fights.
we’d be talking about the shoulder because that was his major injury. he got suspended for the shoulder, not for the cut on his nose.
my point is mostly this – the illegal blows didn’t make him unable to continue. yes, the repeated blows to the head caused major damage, but the last 3 blows didn’t put the damage so far over the top that he couldnt continue. When do we see fights stopped for a cut on the bridge of the nose? If that was the case many of Forest’s fights, and even Fedor’s last fight with Rogers should have been stopped.
Agreed doc you make good points
i dont know, im kinda on the fence with this one. on one hand im thinking if the fight didnt end because of the illegal blows it shouldnt be a DQ, but on the other hand how do you give the win to the guy who broke the rules. it just suck that the fight ended like it did.
banner is the same one that was there earlier in the year when I changed the layout before. havent updated it yet.
give me some ideas for fighters to put up for the 2010 banner
Put the Champs up there.. the new Tuf Champ – Roy Nelson lol … oh how about Shogun since he’s BACK – and Chida, and A Silva, Pierre – Bj Penn, Brock would be a new face.. Fedor – all good ideas -
i’ll second all those choices, and i’ll add Gegard Mousasi.
Good add – forgot how to spell his name so I skipped him but I do agree – he’s def worth putting up there – especially if Roy Nelson or Kimbo’s there lol -
yeah you cant forget Musasi, the guy is on fire right now.
For the Banner, Machida is a must, he definitely made an impression this year, plus hes the champ. Lesnar too, love him or hate him, hes made his presence felt and rising to HW champ.
Other than that, Mousasi and Fedor i think deserve to be there too, also as stated and combination of GSP BJ and Anderson.
@BV
In other words…. what Kansas and RJ said? ;) lol kidding man
ya man, i was just reinforcing your choices, what can i say, you guys are good hehe.
yeah, his fight with Badr Hari was fun to watch. Alistair didn’t even know what country he was in when that fight was over he was so out of it
I would like to see that.. course I could just watch re-runs of Overeem and see the same thing – over the years he has proven that he gets KO’ed in outstanding fashion.
the funniest thing about it was that Overeem was talking like he can easily walk through the GP because hes used to MMA where he has so much more to worry about and K-1 is only striking so he should have no problem dominating lol. a lot of the K-1 guys were bothered by that and wanted to smash him, Hari being one that took offense to it AND he was already motivated to beat Overeem because he lost to him the last time they met.
Overeem put too much stock into his physicality – He is preparing to defend the Strikeforce belt, my guess is he has been off the juice for a month or two already flushing so that might have played into the loss of speed to deflect.
Just dirty assumptions and semantics on my part :)
Ya i watched the K1, my only complaint is that it always almost goes to decision, the past event 8/10 fight went to the cards. But ya i was following along with Overeems talk about MMA and K1. Was nice to see Hari get his revenge, its just that its always the same guys fighting in K1 and Schilt usually wins anyways.
Kind of takes the “shine” off of Overeem in his potential title defense though huh? Kinda sucks… he’s not a viable threat at the moment, not after getting ko’ed again… regardless if they are two different sports, still, he get’s KOed off the planet, people were jumping on that wagon quick, I never did, don’t like him, never have.
How many SEVERE KO’s has Alistair suffered in the past 5 years? A LOT in relation to his short career.
The annoying thing about Overeem was the smack talk, he was just talking too damn much if you ask me. I agree that MMA is harder than just Kickboxing, but dont go disrespecting guys in their own sport, thats what happens man.
Now im sure Fedor will crush him hehe.
lol yeah if the fight had of gone on any longer Hari would have kicked Overeems head right off his shoulders lol. for some reason i didnt want to see Schilt win it AGAIN, but the guy cant be beat in K-1.
but guys break the rules all the time and there is a system in place for that. a point deduction.
if a guy grabs the fence, should he not be able to win because he “cheated”? no, of course not, so they just deduct a point.
should be the same thing in this instance. If we gave a DQ everytime someone did an illegal action then 90% of the fights would be stopped because of cage grabs or blows to the back of the head
your absolutely right, BUT if a fight ends at the same point as the infraction it kinda feels wrong to award him the win. eg. Kenny Florian vs. Sean Sherk, remember when Kenny grabbed the fence to avoid being slammed? well lets say for a second what if Sherk had fallen backwards and Kenny landed in mount and pounded him out, even though they took a point without a break in the action it would have been a crap way to win right?
p.s. i know they would have stood them back up if that scenario happened, i just couldnt think of a good example lol.
I’d be much more inclined to agree with you in this case IF those illegal blows were the only blows Hamill had taken.
If Jones took down Hamill and then hit him with 3 quick illegal elbows and the fight couldn’t continue, it would be clear why. But the fact that Hamill too 18,396 shots to the head before the 3 illegal blows makes it not so cut and dry in my book. I don’t see that those 3 shots had anything to do with the fight being stopped and Hamill not being able to continue
If a fight ends on an illegal blow, it should be a NC – period. That will enforce a policy that you cannot do WHATEVER it takes to win – ie eye gouges ect – for instance, Cro Cop should not have gotten the nod in Germany . period .
I just think it’s wrong when a fighter is dominating anyways then wins with a KO or TKO or sub off an illegal move, I have seen Chuck do it, I have seen Cro Cop do it, I have seen Dan do it, it just suck to see fights go that way.. its not fair these guys are winning vs losing THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, for us it’s a sport, for those guys it’s the difference between a mansion and a shack..
I meant to weigh in on the DQ again but i couldnt post for a while.. I never got to actually say what i think the decision should have been, i also think a NC should have been ruled. I think we can all agree that this one is a bit of a tough call spur of the moment. We have been breaking it down for a while and we still cant definitively say one way or the other.
It will be interesting to see how the Commission rules on it in the coming months.
Couture vs Coleman .. not even looking forward to it. IMO they are going to be messy and boring – neither has the gas tank and neither has looked GREAT – they are old, they need to retire, seriously.. Couture is a legend, nothing left to prove, and not much more to give. As far a Coleman goes, for him right now, 50k a fight is the gravy train on biscuit wheels and I think they could use him as a gate for a while, but the way Couture responded to Vera’s kicks, made me uncomfortable, almost felt guilty for being entertained by a guy who was getting hurt and is way over the hill by most standards.
I know we all say he’s timeless, but in reality, nobody is timeless and his HGH is down at this age in life, he isn’t able to keep his form, his body looks old, his pecs are going downward, he’s not a slugger so his style is boring, both of them need to step down, imo this is the last fight for two great old time legends of the sport. they did more longer than anyone could have imagined.
yeah there is no real reason good for a Couture/Coleman matchup, aside from both of them being to old to hang with anyone else lol. i have a ton of respect for both fighters and all they have done but its time to hang it up for both and make some room for the young bucks to get some of the spot light.
You know for all of Dana’s talk about Chuck night fighting anymore, he doesn’t feel good about making money on that, ect .. what about Randy? The guys headed into his late 40′s… he’s done a little for the sport as well wouldn’t you say, an regardless of past disagreements, he deserves the same respect. I think it’s terrible that Dana protects his friends and throws his associates in the cage to bank as much buck as he can, Couture isn’t George Foreman, and this isn’t boxing.
Not much to say about Couture vs Coleman, you guys pretty much covered it hehe.
This is a fight they can hype up, 2 hall of famers blah blah..
On the plus side, like Kansas said, let Coleman get some coin in his pocket he deserves it for the blood hes shed for us over the years.
I respect them both but I cannot help joke at this point..
Their bodies are almost the same… they really look like two old dudes man.. lol… stallone must be proud right now… and hey, NO PEC IMPLANTS! lol ..
Who is gonna win that fight? I think Couture takes is hands down, simply because he has the height, and boxing in his favor, I think his strategy is better, and his gas tank is just a liiiittle bit better….
me and BV were talking one day about how someone should put together an “old timers” MMA league and this would be a perfect fit for something like that. there is a handful of fighters out there still fighting but are past the time when they were able to be the top guy, and there is a handful out there who dont fight any more but could if they fought guys in the same boat. i would love for someone to put together a card like:
Randy Couture vs. Marco Ruas
Bas Rutten vs. Mark Coleman
Carlos Newton vs Royce Gracie
Murilo Bustamante vs. Pat Miletich
Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Matt Hughes
Don Frye vs. Kevin Randleman
Ken Shamrock vs. Frank Shamrock
now thats a card worth my $59.95
haha ya i remember the old timers league, the only guys they can fight are other old timers. Remember when they put Saku against Manhoeff? man that was just cruel.
Well Randy Couture vs Rafael Cordeiro, (with a little weight gain of course) would be on the top of my old timers list. Why not? I think it would be a great fun fight to watch .. contrasting styles -
You guys should check out Diego Sanchez’ video interview with Fanhouse.. lol I swear he looks like a 15 year old juvenile up to no good.. lol
http://www.mmamania.com/2009/12/9/1193848/diego-sanchez-is-going-to-risk-it
HAHahAHAHAhAHAha that interview was great!! the end is the best when buddy asks him about the “yes cartwheel” and Diego (with a big smile) says: im just trying to keep the fans entertained, then buddy asks can we see one and Diego (completely serious face) says: no….. LMAO!!!
LOL nice interview Kansas, RJ nailed the highpoint of it hehe. Looked like he felt disrespected for a second there.
I dunno if you guys saw the countdown show, but he has nothing in his living room except a giant mirror. I found that to be pretty strange, even stranger than some of the other stuff he does. I was always impressed by his fighting skills and no disrespect to the guy but… ya, hes just odd.
Diego is gonna lose… I am sorry if anyone likes the clown but he’s going down.. BJ by KO or SUB early in round 3.
Diego Sanchez is a moron… that guy…. lol.. cartwheels and YES.. what a goon… he’s beyond nutty…
BJ gonna smack him!
come on man how can you get down on the inventor of the “yes cartwheel” LMAO. i kinda get a kick out of Diego. hes the guy you invite to your party, not because you like him but because you know hes gonna entertain everyone with his wacky antics lol.
Friend of mine who works at Dave and Busters met Diego, it was a meet the fighters kind of night. Diego must have been in a bad mood or something because he didnt participate or want to talk to anyone or take pictures, etc.. She said he didnt even want to talk to the staff when they tried to ask him if he needs anything.
Hes probably more of a loner than a fun party animal type guy.
He just looks confused all the time … like he’s searching for something and trying to make the best of what he’s found so far..
