In 2003, Craig "Dr J" Jolicoeur began what would eventually become MMA HQ.
Over the course of several years and several different websites, MMAHQ.com was established and quickly gained a loyal following. The original and current aim of MMA HQ is to provide up-to-date news and information in the world of mixed martial arts.
Today, thousands of people get their MMA fix either directly through MMAHQ.com, or through its news feeds or associate websites every day. Tags: ESPN, MMA Live
hey Doc they said on MMA Live that the UFC is gonna be going to Beantown this summer….. how pump are you?….. i hope for your sake that parental duties are not gonna keep you from going.
hah, no worries on that one. I’ve (and most of New England) has been waiting for a show hear for years. They just passed the legislation two weeks ago to regulate pro MMA here in Massachusetts (before that, MMA was allowed, just not regulated by the state commission so the UFC wouldn’t come here).
The show right now looks like its going to be in August, and you can be sure that I’ll be there covering the event as credentialed media. Rumors are that the Boston show is when Lesnar is hoping to make his return, so that should be good.
I wonder if Lesnar will be able to return at the same weight, he didn’t build that body on the YMCA and eating wheaties.. it will be interesting indeed.
On the other end, i wonder how BIG Mir will be by the time Brock gets back. You know, Mir and Brock are a rivalry kind of like Chuck and Tito, or Miletech and Gracie.
I live in Kansas, there are NEVER event’s remotely close to me.
So i went to make my picks on the playground and DAM, theres only like 2 fights where i know who i think will win. Most of the fights are so close and anything could happen, real tough event to start off the new year.
On another note, Danas first video blog is out for this event, and most of the video is showing Gilbert Yvel in training, not Dana acting a fool.
i know what your saying, even the ones that i think MIGHT be a lock are still close enough that the X factor could play a role. who do you got in Rashad/Thiago? im thinking Rashads is gonna KO him, i dont think Thiago has the best chin and Rashad is quick and has power.
Yeah everything is too close to call – I both love and hate this card because I want to see Thiago winning and he just THRASHED Jardine not too long ago, but Rashad isn’t Jardine, he’s an entirely different animal and his chin held up wonderfully against Machida, seriously, how many times did he come back after Chida after getting nailed on the button? It’s gonna be a rough fight, Thiago’s chin is suspect regardless of how much I like his camp and style, and he has never made a comeback after losing the first 2 rounds in a fight so I dunno, kind of an edge of the seat type deal for most of the other fights too, but I am concentrating on the main event mostly ..
We got the Dynamite show tonight at 3am, including the undercard fights this is like a whole day event. Theres only a few fights that interest me though. One thing that bugged me is bringing in my boy Goodridge to fight Mousasi, come on man, the guys not ready to fight anyone with 3 days notice especially not Mousasi, theyre throwing him to the wolves. Oh well, a paycheck is a paycheck, go in there get submitted inthe first round and go home.
Also the presser for UFC 108 is today at 4pm, no that im amazed with that card either, but hey, its MMA we take what we can get.
BJ didn’t even get a scratch in his fight with Sanchez, they should have put him back in on this card with Maynard just for the heck of it to sweeten the pot, BJ would have taken it for sure and then who’s gonna question his heart and cardio? I would love to see BJ go 1 fight per month for 3 months straight pending no major injuries, that would be awesome.
I would like to see a 2 fight a night tournament like the old days where Penn goes in and fights thrice to win the trophy, like the old UFC fights, I could see him doing it, especially if a kimono is allowed again – he\’s the closest dominator to Gracie since Gracie. Anderson Silva is an animal, but I hate his hubris and I think he has faked injuries before to get his way in fight situations he didn\’t want to take – most recently with Hendo, and I believe he is the reason Dana released Dan – I think A Silva gave him an ultimatum because he didn\’t want another fight with Dano..
You cant have it both ways Kansas, either BJ fights once a month for 3 months or 3 times in one night. It would be cool just because of the extra dynamic of fighting 3 guys in one night, things like toughness and heart would be alot more important than they are now.
Ofcourse theres a laundry list full of problem with that too, obviously the injuries, like if you beat 2 guys then your unable to continue so a fresh alternate comes in and beats the other guy who also already fought 2 guys. None of the fights would be all out, except the last one because your holding back and trying to save some gas for the next fight.
Man, you know your asking for too much hehe, if guys fouht once every 3 months id be happy, like 4 fights a year would be great. Instead of like 2 fights a year which i dont think is enough, escpecially in terms of title fights, the champ fights once a year then takes a bunch of injury time etc… pretty much every champ does it, but look at a guy like Serra, he milked that for as long as he could and ducked the rematch with GSP for as long as possible.
I know you wanna be the champ dude, but were the ones that suffer, either defend the belt or give it up man, we like title fights and we want #1 contender fights to actually mean something.
Like Wand, he held the title for 5 years, but he also fought 20 TIMES in that span. Ofcourse there were some fights where the title wasnt on the line like GPs and stuff, but the dude FOUGHT. Most guys back then had to fight man! look at Hughes too, he fought 10 times in 2000, then 9 times in 2001, i mean, thats respect man with only 2 losses going 17-2 in 2 years.
Compare that to now where guys fight once maybe twice a year and they sleep with the belt under their pillow just straight up usurping that title.
I did a bit of research, there were 6 title fights this year, so there was only 1 title defense for each weight class and one extra.
So someone can be dominant and hold the title for 5 years like Wand did and only fight 5 times, where Wand fought like 20 times to achieve that… fck outa here with that BS.
and the “newbs” wonder why Wanderlei is so loved by the “oldschoolers” lol. i had some knucklehead say to me “Wands ok, but hes no Brock Lesnar” and i never wanted to b*tch slap someone so bad in my life lol.
I agree.. Wandy’s got more mileage on him than any other fighter at MW right now – he’s fighting a dude in May with almost no mileage. That’s the only way you build a Marciano like legacy though.. seriously.
Need more title fights .. period – BJ is in impeccable health, he hasn’t been injured seriously since his last fight with Hughes – he needs to put out 3-4 a year now so he can build an enormous record of fun fights for us to watch after he retires to add to his already enormous legacy.
Check this out guys, a list of all the fighters who had to pull out of UFC 108 or push their fight back.
Anderson Silva
Vitor Belfort
Brock Lesnar
Shane Carwin
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Cain Velasquez
Rory Markham
Tyson Griffin
Sean Sherk
Carlos Condit
Gabriel Gonzaga
Steve Cantwell
LOL and thats just 1 fight card, this is definitely a first, thats like a whole card worth of injuries or set backs.
Ya i know Kansas, it was injury after injury but when its in list format its just like.. wow. If everything went right this could have been an awesome card.
I don’t like Alistair Overeem .. a LOT .. he’s a sucker – the guys a buster who obviously juices more than anyone out there.. he couldn’t beat top shelf fighters without it, and I believe a lot of fighters, like Fedor would still beat him on the juice.
Just arrogance.. the thing is other can fighters can REALLY get hurt fighting a roided monster like him in a rage.. it’s not fair and it’s dangerous to both him and his opponents – there’s obvious reasons he hasn’t defended the Strikeforce belt in 2 years – Fedors the champ by default in my book -
Funny you should say that Kansas, did you see his fight with Fujita on the dynamite card? would you believe that he actually looked EVEN BIGGER? lets put it this way, it was one blow and it was devastating and thats a guy with a great chin.
He could literally kill someone in the ring, atleast with Brock hes huge but he has no striking technique so it takes away from some of the power.
I saw the fights – Yeah I agree Overeem looks even bigger, I believe he could end up having heart failure in the next 3-4 years if he keeps on with it at that level.. sad
So I was just watching a post-fight interview with Overeem and evidently Fujita got hurt really bad with rumors initially that he DIED after the fight. Those have now been proven false but something interesting is that Overeem is calling out Fedor for May or June. Here is the interview in case you are interested.
For those of you that didnt watch Dynamite, Aoki put Hirota in an LAPD style armlock, flat on his face wrenching his arm up his back. When Hirota refused to tap Aoki snapped his arm badly.
So im thinking ok, dude didnt tap and the ref kind of screwed up so you cant really blame Aoki, then he decides to get in the guys face and give him the finger, then he jumps up and flips off the crowd and run out of the ring.
That really bugged me and i lost a bit of respect for Shinya after that, ofcourse he apologized the next day but still… Uncalled for.
Dang man that was sick!! I love though at the end they were talking about him moving to “another organization” (aka UFC) to fight BJ Penn. I wonder if and when that will happen.
Nah Lam, he will be fighting in strikeforce because they often collab with Dream. UFC is exclusive contracts only, they dont share fighters or anything.
Though i would LOVE to see BJ break his jaw in the first 30 sec of the 1st round for running his mouth. I used to like Aoki but i lost respect for him after his recent tough guy antics.
I see it as a complete mismatch, how could Aoki possibly beat BJ? submission? first of all he wont take him down, 2nd BJ is among the best in the world on the ground himself. I would bet anything on BJ my house car my left nut, Aoki would have no chance.
haha… I hear ya BV. BJ would dominate him IMO. He has been on a tear lately and I dont see anyone stopping him anytime soon. But then again how many fighters have we thought that about only to be proven wrong.
UFC 108 PREVIEW – for those who missed docs post for this event.
Evans vs Silva – I have a feeling Rashad will spar it out with Thiago the first round matching his pace, then change gears in the 2nd like he did vs Chuck and show his full speed. I think he will catch Thiago in the 2nd and finish it up with a few quick shots on the ground.
Hazelett vs Daley – I got Hazelett winning this fight by submission, hes got a HUGE advantage on the ground and Daley has a big advantage in the power department. Jake Shields showed us what a BJJ blackbelt can do to Daley and assuming he doesnt get caught i think we will see a similar result.
Dos Santos vs Yvel – Ive always been a fan of Gilberts skill, if not his personality, but i think this fight happened too fast. At least give him a tune up fight so he can get used to fighting in the UFC. Dos Santos is very comfortable in there at this point and he showed us that he can hang with a dangerous striker in his fight against crocop. I have Dos Santos winning by KO but theres a good chance he might just out point Yvel to a unanimous decision.
Joe Lauzon vs Sam Stout – This fight is a mismatch, Lauzon has a huge advantage over Stout, who HAS improved his ground game but nowhere near the level or the talent that Joe bring to the table. Its a fight so theres always a chance he could catch Lauzon but hes got a good chin too so i think this will be a short night for Stout.
Jim Miller vs Duane Ludwig – Another striker vs grappler mismatch, why didnt they pair Lauzon with Miller and Stout with Ludwig? would have made for 2 interesting fights instead of 2 1st round submission mismatches. Get your mind right Joe Silva…….
Cole Miller vs Dan Lauzon – Lauzon is a good young prospect but he doesnt have the experience to beat someone like Miller. His toughest test to date has been Spencer Fisher who he lost to, this is a step up in competition that i dont think hes ready for yet. If he trained like a beast and improved his game drastically Cole Miller is definitely beatable but ill believe it when i see it. Until that happens i have to defer to skill and experience here, Cole Miller by submission.
Lam, thats very possible, if i were to suggest a good underdog pick it would be Ryan Jensen over Munoz. I just have a feeling Munoz will lay on top of him for a decision.
Pyle i seriously doubt will lose though, dont bet too heavily on that one hehe.
Sorry for the lack of updates this week. Been a pretty busy week with me for work and with the holidays so I have been slacking quite a bit on the MMA HQ stuff (as you all know)
Hey, how bout Sam Stout? great job against Lauzon. I thought it was over in the first min when Lauzon had him in that kimura and after he escaped i still thought Lauzon would get him eventually. Great defense on the ground and great takedown defense which eventually gassed out Lauzon. After that he couldnt get the takedown basically eliminating any possibility of him ending the fight, then Stout punched his way to a solid decision victory.
I am VERY impressed by Sam Stout! If he is able to do that in every fight against BJJ or wrestling guys he could have a great year in 2010. Im glad i got that pick wrong and im still a big fan of Stout, i wont pigeon hole him next time.
I will have to admit it was a good fight. Im still disappointed in J-Lau tho as he is one of the fighters that I really like. And Freakin Dustin Hazlett too!! It seems like the really solid Jujitsu guys I love are all getting killed due to lack of striking prowess. Really sucks :/
thats my boy, you know there was never any doubt in my mind that Sam was gonna win that fight. i have yet to see any of the fights from last weekend, i couldnt find a good stream and i was burned out from work so i said screw it and went to bed lol.
I can’t stand Sam Stout – he doesn’t have “hands of stone” more like “hands of pillows” that got him a decision .. yes he worked it.. yes he won decisively but I feel he lost in Canada last year and I feel that he is a hard working dude who will NEVER get a title shot and if he does he will lose..
yeah Kansas i will agree with you on a few of your points.
#1 i think Wiman should have gotten the nod at UFC97
#2 Sam is a very hard worker, but i dont see a belt in his future.
#3 i dont know what happen but he seems to have lost the ability to KO people, in the early days he was dropping people left and right but now, not so much.
i wonder if his power is suffering due to his size, like i said the other day i notice a loss of power when ever i pack on the muscle and Sam has definitely packed on a bunch of muscle.
He may be too stiff to swing right with the loose heavyness that is required.. sometimes less is more.. look at Dan Henderson, he’s smaller than his opponents 9 out of 10 times but he can knock them out.
I was very disappointed in the main event – Rashad did what I knew he would do – Greg Jacksons camp is just full of people that have one move.. Take Down – the problem with that is it’s like watching someone in a video game with ONE MOVE and they do it over and over – it’s not fun to watch, not fun to play – it’s just annoying – Thiago exposed what I believe but wasn’t 100% sure of before which is that Rashad has a hard time taking direct shots and guess what, he can’t outwrestle Jackson so he’s gonna get crushed. Jackson will out wrestle him, out GNP him, and if they stand, OMG Rashad is going to sleep.
this makes me glad i didnt pay the $60 to watch this one. from what ive read Rashad didnt put on much of a show. seems like he might be reverting back to the lay’n'pray guy that people b*tched about so much before he started KOing people.
the sad thing is the UFC has spoiled us in the last few years with the “new years” show, last year we got Mir vs. Nog (interim heavy title), Forrest vs. Rashad (light heavy title), and Rampage vs. Wanderlei.
two years ago St.Pierre vs. Hughs 3 (welter title) and Chuck vs. Wanderlei
and three years ago we got Liddell vs. Ortiz 2.
this year they couldnt even get me hyped enough to buy the card.
I went to Buffalo Wild wings and dropped $39 on food to watch the card – got to catch the Arkansas game too .. also took my wife, father in law, and my wifes 10yo brother to watch the fights .. I didn’t and wont pay for a card like that – it was good all around and the main event was okay, the 3rd round was as good as it gets – Silva looked doughey .. like he didn’t train his cardio .. he also couldn’t dive in and finish the KO he landed .. sad .. he had the fight won and then let it go .. I hear his back was injured, which takes from the cardio aspect and agility on the ground which is why I think he didn’t go in for the kill.
Rashad went back to lay n pray .. it sucked, it was annoying .. Rampage will kill him.
its about the future of this site and related issues.
can’t really discuss publicly at the moment. if your interested, the email list will be the way to get any “official” info from me in the next few days about it
hey Doc they said on MMA Live that the UFC is gonna be going to Beantown this summer….. how pump are you?….. i hope for your sake that parental duties are not gonna keep you from going.

press row? oh man that would be sweet!
For sure. I can already get credentials through BleacherReport.com, the UFC just never has any events close enough for me to travel too.
(Well, I could make the Montreal and New Jersey shows, I just would have to make it a weekend trip.)
I wonder if Lesnar will be able to return at the same weight, he didn’t build that body on the YMCA and eating wheaties.. it will be interesting indeed.

so i know my boy BV will be up till the wee hours tonight, is there any other hardcores out there that will be watching Dynamite tonight?
you know im down like a clown charlie brown
lmao….. it must be a crazy Canuck thing lol.
I think 108 is subar in comparison to other cards, but in the end, I will watch, and I like the fights, not CRAZY about them but they are good.
the only reason why im even ordering this is to see dos santos knocked out.
BJ didn’t even get a scratch in his fight with Sanchez, they should have put him back in on this card with Maynard just for the heck of it to sweeten the pot, BJ would have taken it for sure and then who’s gonna question his heart and cardio? LOL and thats just 1 fight card, this is definitely a first, thats like a whole card worth of injuries or set backs.
that’s why they call it the “cursed” card.
Ya i know Kansas, it was injury after injury but when its in list format its just like.. wow. If everything went right this could have been an awesome card.
HOLY SHT!! Sokoudjou vs Minowa was EPIC! ive never seen anything like that in a fight.
I don’t like Alistair Overeem .. a LOT .. he’s a sucker – the guys a buster who obviously juices more than anyone out there.. he couldn’t beat top shelf fighters without it, and I believe a lot of fighters, like Fedor would still beat him on the juice.

YO doc no predictions for the event saturday????
I was wondering the same thing…

was there any bad blood between aoki and hirota?aoki is a beast on the floor but his standup really really really sucks.

I agree with just about all of your predictions with two exceptions, I have Munoz and Pyle losing but those two fights are mostly just a guess.

Pyle i seriously doubt will lose though, dont bet too heavily on that one hehe.
YEAH JAKE!!!!
hehe I Got super lucky on that one! I got all three right
why does everyone think dos santos is gonna win JEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZ???????!!!!!!!!

lol Lam, i cant believe Pyle got caught like that, gotta love mma.
Yeah man I was thinking it was gonna be the start of a great season! But I dont think Im doing very good on the rest of the card so far lol
Nice to know.
this makes me glad i didnt pay the $60 to watch this one. from what ive read Rashad didnt put on much of a show. seems like he might be reverting back to the lay’n'pray guy that people b*tched about so much before he started KOing people.
the sad thing is the UFC has spoiled us in the last few years with the “new years” show, last year we got Mir vs.
