B.J. Penn has lost two consecutive lightweight championship fights against current champion Frankie Edgar, and there is some concern as to how Penn is mentally and physically feeling.
Days after the loss, Penn announced he planned to get back into the gym and wants to get another fight as soon as possible. UFC President Dana White and Penn’s camp haven’t officially met and discussed what’s next for the fighter, but Sherdog thinks a possible Penn vs. Clay Guida match is possible.
There have also been rumors of a Penn vs. Gomi II matchup as well, but it’ll depend on what the UFC hopes to put together.
“B.J. looked like he broke in the second round of that fight,” White told MMAWeekly after UFC 118. “Who knows (what’s next)? We’ll see where he goes from here.”
Well, Penn wants to make good on a promise to fight often — and said he wants to get back into the cage “as soon as possible,” hoping he can “build off of what I built in the last camp.”
Money and fame aside, Penn fights for the sake of competing against the best fighters in the world. Unlike many others entering the sport, the skilled Hawaiian former champion doesn’t need to fight and coach MMA to make a living.
Even so, I don’t know if he should be in such a rush to hurry back into the octagon, even if he’s anxious to wash away memories of those two recent losses. If Penn takes some time to regroup, figures out what is next, and trains the way MMA athletes need to today, he’ll be a nightmare for most of the lightweight division.
