In what has to be considered a groundbreaking move, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson confirmed in an interview with Tapout radio that his semi-final bout in the UFC Flyweight Championship tournament will feature a “sudden-death” round if necessary.
According to Johnson, the bout will feature a fourth round if after the regulation time the judges can not make a decision.
“…we (McCall and himself) had to sign for a ‘sudden death’ bout. If it goes to three rounds, and the judges can’t decide who the winner is, then we’ll do a fourth round.”
Although Johnson couldn’t confirm, it can be assumed that the other bracket, featuring Joseph Benavidez and Yasuhiro Urushitani, were forced to sign a similar contract.
There has been no comment from the UFC is this is something that is planned to become normal in major bouts. It would certainly add a new dimension to world title bouts, and may give judges the freedom to grant a 10-10 scorecard when rounds are very close.
