Antonio Silva vs Sergei Kharitonov in EliteXC
EliteXC announced that Antonio Silva will fight for their open heavyweight title at their July 26 Saturday Night Fights event on CBS.
An official opponent for Silva has not yet been named but Loretta Hunt is reporting that Sergei Kharitonov has verbally agreed to take the fight and the bout is currently pending approval by the California State Athletic Commisison.
If the fight is approved it will be the third EliteXC title fight on the CBS live show joining the middleweight title fight between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith and the welterweight title fight between Jake Shields and Nick Thompson.
Matt Hughes Suffers Torn MCL
Matt Hughes gave an update today on his personal website regarding the knee injury he suffered in his loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85.
I found out my results, I’ve got a totally torn MCL that is still attached
to my femur. I’ve got a partially torn PCL. They really think that the PCL
will repair itself and that MCL has a chance of repairing itself. So we’re
going to hold off on surgery right now. I am going to get a second opinion
this week, so that might change; but for now we’re going to hold off on
surgery.
Luke Cummo vs Tamdan McCrory at UFC 87
The UFC officially confirmed earlier today that Luke Cummo and Tamdan McCrory will fight at UFC 87 this August.
Cummo last fought at UFC 82 where he lost to Luigi Fioravanti via decision. McCrory is also coming off a loss against Akihiro Gono via submission at UFC 78.
UFC 87 is scheduled for August 9 in Minneapolis, MN and will be headlined by the UFC welterweight title fight between Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch. Also on the card are Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring, and Kenny Florian vs Roger Huerta.
Rory Markham Signs with UFC
Sam Caplan is reporting that Rory Markham has signed a contract with the UFC and is expected to make his debut at UFC Fight Night 14.
Markham was a standout in the now (all but) defunct International Fight League with an overall record of 14-4. He most recently fought at the inaugural Adrenaline MMA event last weekend where he won via submission in the first round.
Markham is expected to fight Brodie Farber at UFN 14 on July 19. Other former IFL fighters expected to make their UFC debuts at UFN 14 are Brad Blackburn and Reese Andy.
Nick Diaz vs Thomas Denny on July 26
Loretta Hunt is reporting that Nick Diaz and Thomas Denny will fight on July 26 on the next EliteXC-CBS Saturday Night Fights event.
Denny made his EliteXC debut at a ShoXC event earlier in the year when he won via disqualification against highly touted Malaipet. The bout agreement between Diaz and Denny put to rest the rumors of a Diaz rematch with KJ Noons on July 26.
Hunt also reports that the event will take place at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, CA as was earlier speculated.
