Everyone’s favorite bald journalist has an interesting article up today at Yahoo Sports. According to Kevin Iole, Dana White has announced that the UFC will not be stripping Sean Sherk of his lightweight title belt, regardless of the final outcome of Sherk’s appeal before the California State Athletic Commission.
Sean Sherk is going to remain the UFC’s lightweight champion, but B.J. Penn and Joe Stevenson will fight for a lightweight belt at UFC 80 in January in Newcastle, England, UFC president Dana White said Friday.
White said he’s not going to strip Sherk of his lightweight championship because he is fed up with the California Athletic Commission’s handling of Sherk’s steroids case.
White had vowed to strip Sherk of the title, but said Friday that he no longer plans to do so.
“The way this whole thing has been handled has been a mess,” White said.
He said Penn and Stevenson, who said he learned on Tuesday that he and his wife will have another son, will fight for the interim title as the main event of UFC 80 in Newcastle, England, likely on Jan. 19.
The winner of that bout would then presumably face Sherk once Sherk’s status is defined by the commission.
Zach Arnold over at FightOpinion.com raises some good discussion about Dana White and the UFC opposing the CSAC’s ruling on this matter.
To me the bigger question is what is the point of having multiple title-holders in the same division? If Sherk is going to retain his title, there is no “interim” title even available for BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson to fight for at UFC 80 in January. In addition, the CSAC didn’t exonerate Sherk yet; his appeal was simply postponed again until November 13. What happens in two weeks when Sherk could possible have his appeal denied. The UFC is then going to let Sherk, a “convicted” steroid user, retain his title while still holding a so-called “interim” title fight at UFC 80?
Does any of that even make sense at all? I’m not sure I’ve heard of a more illogical statement come from Dana White in quite a long time. Now, I don’t completely believe that the UFC won’t strip Sherk’s title. This is just Iole’s word on the matter, something I hold in very low regard. I won’t be surprised in the least when the UFC decideds to strip Sherk’s belt on November 14.
YEA KINDA CONFUSED HERE. HOW CAN U KEEP UR TITLE.. BUT YET TWO MEN ARE FIGHTING FOR IT AT UFC 80???DOC WANNA FILL ME IN?
same exact thing that i thought when i read this.. doesnt make any sense.. what “interim belt”? lol.
Has anyone ever been convivted of steroid use and retained the title?? not that i know of.. and they shouldnt start now.
the whole thing is stupid. sure, if Sherk’s appeal is successful and his suspension is dropped then you would have this whole weird Champ vs Champ bout setup for later on, but that is just dumb.
You would dilute the value of your title belt if you allow 2 guys to hold the SAME EXACT belt at the same time.
..if i was Tim Sylvia..id be absolutely livid, at this announcement..
i mean..correct me if im wrong here..but.didnt he lose his heavyweight title for the exact same reason?? so how is tha fair??
YEA NO ****

whats happening to the ufc and its management, are they all a bunch of meat heads or what? cause this **** is absurd
It really is crazy. I don’t see how they can make any official position until after Sherk’s full appeal process is over.
I mean, come on. They can’t wait another 2 weeks to make this decision?
ya good point doc, but maybe its guys like Iole busting their balls trying to get some kind of inside scoop on the Sherk story. I think Dana puts his foot in his mouth alot of times, but im sure it would happen to anyone under the media scrutinty. Theyre just looking for things to pick at and stories to invent..
I personally think Dana is just making it up as he goes…. lol looks like an incompetent idiot …
maybe he thinks that sherk is gonna lose his case and wants to let sherk save some face
I still say Dana is just acting on emotion… he is more dramatic than a 14 year old girl…
hey Kansas, did you DL that mixtape? cuz im thinking maybe people dont know how to do it or something heh
hey Kansas, did you DL that mixtape? cuz im thinking maybe people dont know how to do it or something heh
BV honestly man I have been working last few days, its been NUTS so I am a bit tied up right now.. I will hit that Sunday afternoon I think, just leave it there man.. :)
Sherk looks JUICED in this pic! LOL!
is there any way sherk could be innocent ,could the test be wrong. The guy works out like a beast maybe his body produces a lot of extra testastorone?
DR J
rumors are going around saying dave terrell is injured, know if its true?
i remember reading somewhere that the UFC didnt strip Big Tim ether he gave the title up. the only guy i know of that they did strip was Josh Barnett and at the time he was still under contract somewhere else. so it wouldnt blow my mind if they did let Sherk keep his strap.
Sherk looks JUICED in this pic! LOL!
haha yea, first thing i thought when i saw it, looks like the red/green colour is a bit off making him look like the Incredible Hulk lol.
Richard, Terrell is always injured.

The only people that carry that high of testosterone in their bodies are Native Americans, and Native Brazilian Indians … Royce Gracie is half Amazonian Indian by genetic trait, probably the reason he had too much in his body, and probably the reason guys like Hendo have had spikes in theirs over time… not enough to generate a problem but I don’t see an excuse for Sherk..
My best friend is a doctor, he is the one who gave me that tidbit, says Indians from north and south America have the highest amounts of it in their bodies….
Sherk looks pretty anglo to me… lol
what really surprises me is that Dana is made at the CSAC for how they handled this…but it was Sherks lawyers that turned in the papers at the very last possible minute…maybe hoping that the CSAC would make a hasty decision to over turn the initial ruling?
The CSAC did the right thing by postponing and making sure they had plenty of time to sift thru all the crap that Sherks lawyers sent. And i’m sure they made all the documents as complicated as possible as all lawyers do.
And they all lived happily ever after.
The End
All this Sherk stuff is a mess, but is Joe Daddy the best in the LW next to Penn? I would think Ken-Flo would get another shot over Joe Daddy.
guys..do you remember the kenflo vs sherk fight?.from that match..kennyflorian got overpowered liek crazy..like he had the skills, but just could not handle sherkks strength. kennys technique and skill was nutrilized by shrek, the same way sherk dominated his last fight…i think i Joe stevenson would prove to put on a better match physically and skillfully against sherk. i say this bc he dropped down from welterweight to light weight, and his conditioning/skills have appeared to improve dramatically throughout the course of his last few fights.. do you see what im sayin?
but now…if we put BJ into the equation..all penn haters be openminded for a second..he is ranked top 2 behind sherk…when Bj fought hughes at welterweight, he basically dominated at first, and matts size and strength was nutrilizeed at first, then got killed cause of this weak cardio. if u saw his last fight against jens pulver, he looks in amazing shape, kinda like he did way back when he was champ. i think penn would put on a good fight against sherk in the shape that he is in now.
now who do you think would be a better challenge for sherk..
how do you feel about Penn vs stevenson? for a contender
YEA DAY DAY… KENFLO SUCKS ***… SHERK IS A STRONG DOMINENT BEAST..
JOE VS BJ… ID HAVE TO GO WITH THE YOUNGER MORE CONDITIONED ATHELETTE.. WHEN SHERK COMES BACK HE’LL MOST LIKELY BE CHAMP FOR A WHILE I SEE IT..
HEY HOWS BOUT WE TALK ABOUT HOW UGLY SHAWNS FACE LOOKS IN THIS PICTURE
@EVERYONE???
WHAT DO YOU THINK SHERK WALKS AROUND AS … WEIGHT WISE…
@EVERYONE???

prabably like 175-180

i personnally think maybe stevenson vs sherk man love fest maybe. Now bj vs sherk ,i used to think before sherk easily but bj bjj is fantastic and the man can strike so if i had to make a prediction today i would say bj by rear naked choke in the 4th
ok i really havent said a whole lot on this topic but i need to ask am i the only one who thinks Sherk should get striped? if convicted that is. if Sherk is into roids and they let him keep the title what does that say for the UFC? it says that Sherk can call him self the champ for a year without having to defend the title and if you think that means hes not getting paid your wrong i seen a commercial TODAY with Sherk, in it he was getting dressed and the voice over says: “how does UFC champ Sean Sherk stay looking this good?…….” (you know what im thinking) then he puts on a warrior wear hat and a hot chick says “hi Sean…” huh so hes a sponsored juicebag? cool eh? i think maybe all the fighter should do it so they have a better shot at the title, and the fights would only get better can you imagine two guys the size of Sylvia with bodys like Sherk and as agile as Penn? it does wonders for your body and lets not forget how good it is for the brain. so anyways rant over just had to get that out there.

I think SHREK should not get stripped.. that hurts the UFC not the fighter who took the banned substance… I think he should have his contract revoked under the guise that he broke it in violating CSAC rules and bringing reprimand on himself as the UFC title holder and be forced to sign anew with the UFC under less money on a 3 fight deal to teach him a lesson… the pocketbook is where it hurts boys the pocketbook….

good point.
man F**K Dana White if he lets the Juice Shark keep the belt even after the commision finds him guilty.
I’m just glad BJ has already taken a stand against this
yeah.. BJ doesn’t need the juice to be the champ… thats one reason I like him, the other is because his fights are never boring
Just another comment (if Iole is correct) that proves that Dana White is an embarassment to the sport. MMA has moved past White. He did his thing in legitimizing the sport, but his ego and lack of professionalism prevents him from taking the UFC and the sport to the next level. Fertiita’s, time to move on with another ‘bus-driver’.
I THINK IOLE IS A SICK *** AND DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HES TALKING ABOUIT.. EVEN THOUGH DANA DROPS THE F BOMB IN EVERY SENTENCE DOESNT MEAN HES NOT PROFESSIONAL
Fan since 93, i dont think the fertitas will EVER get rid of Dana, they been best friends for god knows how long. Also im pretty sure Dana was smart enough to make sure hes well dug in there legally as a legitimate financial partner. Unless Dana dies or something, he will be the president of the UFC for a long time.
about the Sherk thing.. I think he should be striped of the title, simple.. roids? stripped of the title. Now im not a chemist, but i find it really hard to believe that these chemicals are just produced at a higher level in his body because he works so hard. I just dont buy that guys! Maybe hes not injecting anabolic steroids in his *** or anything, but all the weird stuff he eats and the tons of supplements he takes, where do you draw the line?
If his combination of diet and and vitamins results in a huge testosterone count, in my opinion, its the same thing as taking roids that would do the same job, just faster. Just because hes juicing “the hard way” doesnt make it ok man. If your getting injections or your just eating bulls balls or something, the end result is the same..
He works hard man, but im sure some olympic athletes and such work harder than Sherk, and their bodies arent naturally producing monster numbers on the testosterone scale.. Hes fcking around man.. plain and simple.

Uhhh Patrick what is professional then???? You obviously don’t know what “ethics” and “professionalism” are if you think saying the f-word while representing your company in public, on tv, in front of the press, and in front of large crowds is …. standard and OKAY… lol
KANSAS MUST YOU ALWAYS BUST MY BALLS…MAYBE YOU AND I ARE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE THEN

Dana White should run as Hillary Clintons VP… lol kidding
LOL RIGHT… SEE I LIKED NOT ONLY WAS HE A PIG… HE WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD PRESIDENT
i think dana white is running a buisness and be a fan at the same time u cant do both cuz sometimes the fights fans want to see like when sokodoju wanted bising wouldnt really be good buisness wise since the ufc is starting to branch out to england

What was “good” about him? He gutted the military, he never responded to terrorist attacks, and he drained our tech stocks by pushing for tax increases and higher rates on that end of the stock spectrum, but all you see Patrick is “everyones shopping, let the good times roll, lets all smoke a J with Bill and nothing is wrong or right” … that is the mark of a jaded generation that cares not about principle, heritage, or ethics, only of the temporal pocketbook, and a national ambiance of “whatever feels good is okay”.. but hey, like Winston Churchill once said “If you are not a liberal at twenty, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative at forty, you have no brain.”… :)

I have to say that it bothers me immensely when I see fighters that work hard at their craft/sport…lose to a guy that uses “helper” drugs…look at Sherk - freakishly huge ice cream cone muscle shape…its bullsh**…take a look at the natural talents: BJ, Stevenson, KFlo…they look slim, trim, and perform with amazing technique…yet they lose because they are “overpowered”…not by a fighter but by “helper” drugs the fighter is ingesting. Makes me sick.
I’ll go on record…take a close look at Houston Alexander, I’d eat my own wolf sh** if we didn’t find out eventually that he was juicing as well. People just don’t look that way naturally. Sorry.

I wouldn’t go so far to call out fighters I am not 100% sure about, but I would have to agree with you for the most part, as far a juicers go… I have NO respect for them and think the UFC should start dropping contracts and resigning at PUNISHMENT level money to let them know they are not happy ..
I think a guy can be cut like Houston without using roids, but when you look at Sherk, the guys veins are about to pop man. Look at it as cars, say your not allowed to use nitro in a race, but your gonna try and use everything thats allowed and overdo it. Next thing you know your at 1000 horsepower! so with Sherk, he hasnt technically used steroids, but hes duplicated the effects steroids would have using products that would be considered legal in mma. The end result is his 1000 horsepower testosterone level which isnt naturally occuring, it was engineered.
The whole idea of drug testing is that all athletes are on an even keel.. Whats next? guys with cybernetic arms that can just grab a guys leg and crush it? technically it wouldnt be steroids, so does that make it acceptable? nooo…
Sherk fcked around and he got caught, bottom line..
Talking about Houston.. i just read up some stuff about him.
Yet in addition to sometime 10 hour shifts in the summer heat, Alexander – then the father of five – had more troubling issues on his mind. His oldest child, 10 year old daughter Elan, was born with a kidney dysfunction, and now the kidney was starting to give out on her. The decision he made next wasn’t tough for him, but it was monumental – he was tested and was a match for his daughter. Soon after, he gave Elan his kidney. A week later, he was back at work.
“I wouldn’t want to disappoint people like that,†said Alexander when talking about ‘going Hollywood’. “I have a lot of people looking up to me, specifically the kids, and I have a whole community of people who stand behind me, so I have to watch what I say and watch what I do because I consider myself a role model. I don’t care what other professional athletes say when they say ‘oh, I’m not a role model.’ Yes you are, because there are a lot of kids who pattern themselves as a Michael Jordan or a Walter Payton. And I’m not a perfect guy, but I’m gonna try to do my best to guide a lot of individuals that are looking up to me.

Wow… that is great man… yeah sans the comment I made regarding this “I wouldn’t go so far to call out fighters I am not 100% sure about” because I don’t know enough about the man to say such things.. I have seen bums with good genes living on the streets of Dallas Texas with a better physique than me living off of spare change so who the heck knows… but he is fighting with one kidney, and he is a black man in America working hard to feed his kids taking up the role of Role Model which is more than I can say for some NFL, (Bill Belecheck) NBA, (kobe bryant) or other professional sports orgs/athletes ..
