Nominations for 2007 MMA Awards

December 12th, 2007 | by Dr J

nominations for 2007 MMA AwardsAs we once again near the end of another year, it’s time to start thinking about the yearly MMA “awards” that will be given out. This is the first year, MMA HQ is going to list our own awards selections and I’m looking for input from our faithful readers.

In the comments section of this post, please leave your nominations in each of the following categories. You, of course, can nominate as many choices as you want for each award in the comments either by text, audio, or video.

  • Fight of the Year
  • Fighter of the Year
  • Newcomer/Breakout Fighter of the Year
  • Most Disappointing Fighter of the Year
  • Best Knockout of the Year
  • Best Submission of the Year
  • Biggest MMA News Story of the Year
  • Best MMA Event/Fight Card of the Year
  • Best MMA Promotion of the Year
  • Best MMA Fight Camp/Fight Team of the Year
  • Worst Judging Decision of the Year

The deadline for nominations will be December 31st, and the winners will be named sometime in January of 2008. So get your nominations in now - the more nominations the better.

** PS **
I realize there still are a few MMA shows coming up including UFC 79 and the IFL World Grand Prix Finals. These events and the fighters on those fight cards can of course be included in your nominations.

I’m leaving this additional information in the comments, so only you active MMA HQ readers see it.

For those that leave nominations and want to work with me in actually picking the winners in each category, I have set up a mailing list that will be used for discussing the nominations. That way, if you are subscribed to the discussion list, you can take part in all the discussion and not have to visit the website and read through tons of comments to see if you miss anything. And I also don’t want to carry out all those debates in the comments section either.

So, if you are interested in not only leaving nominations, but also helping decide the winners, you can visit the following page and signup for the mailing list:

Click here to join the MMA HQ mailing list

Once, you signup you will get an email to confirm your subscription and give you instructions on how to post a message to the discussion list.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR - Huerta vs Guida (i think it really lived up to the hype, awesome fight, much respect to both guys. Huerta proved himself and mybe now Guida will start getting the respect he deserves too.)

FIGHTER OF THE YEAR - Anderson Silva (gotta give it to him man, he showed what a real champ is made of this year showing truly well rounded skill in beating Franklin, Lutter and Marquardt. Randy was a close 2nd but he lost a few points with me because of all the drama.)

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR - Roger Huerta (Huerta joined the UFC late last year and this year alone hes had 5 FIGHTS in he UFC! thats alot of fights, alot of pressure and he really rose to the challenge. Ive been critical of Huerta and he still has fought low level opponents, but he fights who they put in front of him and he trys to finish fights. Hes still a young kid and he has a great mma carreer ahead of him.)

MOST DISAPPOINTING FIGHTER OF THE YEAR - Mauricio Rua (without a doubt the worst performance in his entire carreer. Not taking anything away from Forrest but Shogun looked like he was in terrible shape and his head wasnt in the fight. At that level of competition, you gotta be 100% in the cage or all the skill in the world cant save you. I still believe Shogun will come back strong tho and demonstrate why most people consider him the #1 LHW in the world.)

BEST KNOCKOUT OF THE YEAR - Gabriel Gonzaga (like Patrick said, his win over crocop was phenominal man, not only an immortal highlight reel, but also probably the most unlikely thing that could ever happen in mma history lol. “hey i bet you Gonzaga will KO crocop with a head kick” LOL…. but he made it happen, nobody will ever forget the name Gonzaga after that.)

Best submission of the year - Nick Diaz (Although Gomi looked just as bad as Shogun did in the cage, cant take anything away from Diaz. Great heart taking Gomis best shots, keeping his composure and finishing the fight with that gogo out of nowhere. Another trophy of accomplishment for the legacy of Nick Diaz.)

BIGGEST MMA NEWS STORY OF THE YEAR - Randy Coutrue (Definately the biggest story, not the best story though.. Sitting out his contract, talking about money.. very negative but it definately got the most press, especially online.)

BEST MMA EVENT OF THE YEAR - UFC 79 (Kind of hard to say its the best card since it hasnt happened yet and who knows.. all the fights could end up as controvetial hump fests hehe. But with Hughes - Serra, the brubber match of the best 2 WW in the world, and Liddell - Silva, the most anticipated fight in mma history.. Suffice it to say, its a very important card, so ill go along with you guys on this one.)

Best MMA promotion of the year - UFC (lol id like to see someone say otherwise…)

BEST MMA FIGHT CAMP OF THE YEAR - Extreme Couture (im a big fan of Chuteboxe and Miletich, but the amount of guys that have been training with Randy this year is amazing. Both experienced fighters Like Wandy or Dean lister, and new younger fighters like Forrest or Tyson Griffin. Just this year in particular everyone is down with Randy, they wanna pick his brain and rightly so.)

WORST JUDGING DECISION OF THE YEAR - Gray Maynard (his No contest decision vs Rob Emerson. That really burned me up man, alot of people might disagree with me but the fact is: Emerson tapped and the ref jumped in and stopped the fight. Then after the fight was over, the ref thought Maynard had KOed himself durig the takedown. I dont know who had the final say in that decision but it was announced a NC. After the fight, doctors confirmed that Gray had no sign of concussion.. he would have been 4-0 kid got robbed in my opinion.)

A number of these are clear cut - Card(79), promotion(ufc), judging(bisping vs hamil) but what are some other possible nominations? Maybe because its the most recent and somewhat sentimental but I liked the War Machine/J-Rock fight for sleeper pick fight of the year. Other noms could include Courture vs Silvia, Fisher vs Stout, Gomi vs Diaz but I want some feedback - for all categories not just fight of the year. What are some other possible nominations? Also i think they should add another category - best entrance. Clear cut winner Forrest Griffin in Belfast - Dropkick Murphys “Shipping up to Boston” sweetest entrance ever.

Rvrasp I hope your kidding in saying Maynard fight was year’s worst judging. Rules are rules and if your going that route technicly Maynard was knocked out first - before the tap. There is only one answer - bisbing/hamil worst judging in the sport to date.

I disagree Jimmy, rules ARE rules, and the fact is, as soon as Emerson started tapping the ref jumped in and gave the fight to Maynard. Its not based on what people think might have happened, its based on what the Ref called. Hughes vs Newton is a perfect example, people thought Hughes was out too, in the end Hughes got the win.

Its all about what the Ref calls during the fight and the fight ended by submission.. how can anyone argue with that?? its ridiculous, Gray got robbed and i think it was the worst call in 2007.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 11 months, 2 weeks ago

damn theres a lot of new face around here today. Doc i think you hit on something here. i see a lot of the same pick for somethings and i agree with most of them. its funny you did this right now because i just spent the last week reviewing the last year, i started with UFC66 and tonight i will watch UFC76 and EliteXC-Uprising. im going to give this one some thought and i will post my picks after after i finished watching my DVDs, but i will tell two of the picks now. fighter of the year: Anderson Silva (yes it a bias opinion) and new fighter of the year: Roger Huerta. i picked Huerta because he may not have beaten a lot of top fighters but he does fight his asss off and ive never seen him in a boring fight. i picked Anderson because im a huge fan and i dont need anyother reason then that lol.

Fight of the Year - Any Clay Guida fight. Period.

Fighter of the Year - Anderson Silva - demolished all that opposed him in brutal fashion.

Newcomer/Breakout Fighter of the Year - Sokodjou

Most Disappointing Fighter of the Year - Cro Cop (I would say Tim Sylvia, but I expect poor/boring performances by now. Cro Cop gets nominated because I think he is one of the best.)

Best Knockout of the Year - Matt Serra knocking out GSP.

Best Submission of the Year - Jens Pulver choking out Cub Swanson.

Biggest MMA News Story of the Year - UFC buys PRIDE and kills it.

Best MMA Event/Fight Card of the Year - Pride 33

Best MMA Promotion of the Year - WEC - It’s free, and their fights are exciting. Now with Faber and Pulver, it has the best featherweight division in the world hands down.

Best MMA Fight Camp/Fight Team of the Year : greg Jacksons

Worst Judging Decision of the Year - Bisping - Hammill

You guys all make great claims, and it’s certainly been an exciting and dynamic year in MMA. My only beef is:

Can someone please explain to me who claimed Paulo Filho as the best middleweight in the world?

Given, last night was the first and only time I’ve seen him fight, and even though it’s just one fight…I saw nothing impressive that would even last 2 minutes in the cage with a world-class striker like Anderson Silva, or even a Dan Henderson.

He definitely looked awful last night. I think when Sonnen slammed him right at the start that he really got knocked out and got his bell rung. You could hear Chael yelling to the ref that he was out and Filho wasn’t fighting back at all. Then I think he woke up and was just dazed and out of it for quite a while.

# Fight of the Year

Matt Grice vs. Jason Black
UFC 77

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to watch this fight, go to UFC In Demand, Youtube or wait till it comes out on DVD. Trust me, you won’t regret watching this one. Truly one of the better fights I’ve seen.

# Fighter of the Year
Anderson Silva

This guy has plowed through everyone he’s faced and really has only been tested once since signing with the UFC. He wins this running away.

# Newcomer/Breakout Fighter of the Year
Frankie “The Answer” Edgar

Here’s a guy who went from a virtual unknown outside the states of New Jersey/Pennsylvania and in less than 10 months has established himself as one of the top contenders for the Lightweight Title. He picked up three very impressive wins and defeated two top 10 LW in the UFC to get there.

I don’t know if he’s next in line, but he should be at least in the top 4 at this point for that UFC Lightweight Title.

# Most Disappointing Fighter of the Year

Cro-Cop

So much for him running through the UFC Heavyweight Division. He looked sluggish and lethargic in his win over Eddie Sanchez, gets beat by way a head kick by Gabriel Gonzaga then returns to the Octagon 4 months later and looks tentative and a shell of the dominant force he was expected to be in his loss to Cheick Kongo. At this point, it’s hard to gauge what Cro-Cop’s next fight is, but this is known for certain– it’s almost a must win situation.

# Best Knockout of the Year

Houston Alexander over Keith Jardine
UFC 71

This was nothing short of a beatdown.

# Best Submission of the Year

Paulo Filho over Chael Sonnen
WEC 31

Honestly, one of the nastiest submissions I’ve ever seen.

# Biggest MMA News Story of the Year

The purchase of Pride by Zuffa.

# Best MMA Fight Camp/Fight Team of the Year

Chute Box

# Worst Judging Decision of the Year

Hamil vs. Bisping

Hamil got royally and massively screwed with this decision.

* Fight of the Year - Griffin/Edgar - Just an absolute war, and technical too.
* Fighter of the Year - Rampage - Knocking out the champ and, unlike some other Pride converts, handling the transition to the cage with apparent ease.
* Newcomer/Breakout Fighter of the Year - Frank Edgar - This kid can fight.
* Most Disappointing Fighter of the Year - Cro Cop - If anyone were to only have seen his fights in the UFC this year, there’s no way they would buy him as the former #2 in the world.
* Best Knockout of the Year - Scott Smith over Drago at the Ultimate Finale. Yeah, it wasn’t between the two greatest fighters in the world, but still one hell of a finish to go from all but beaten to KO in the blink of an eye.
* Best Submission of the Year - Dan Miller’s Guillotine in the IFL - If you haven’t seen it yet, he turns the poor guy’s head entirely upside down. Bas called it the tightest guillotine he’s ever seen (http://youtube.com/watch?v=iCs_aBqKLEc)
* Biggest MMA News Story of the Year - Randy’s retirement - more stories came out about rumored press conferences than did about some entire PPVs.
* Best MMA Event/Fight Card of the Year - While the actual card was a little lacking on paper, in terms of most entertainment in one broadcast, every fight on the Knockout card, despite them essentially all going the distance, was damn good.
* Best MMA Promotion of the Year - Has to go to the UFC what the whole eliminating their top competitor thing.
* Best MMA Fight Camp/Fight Team of the Year - With a handful of titles and some monster upsets to their name, I’d put my vote for Team Quest.
* Worst Judging Decision of the Year - Bisping over Hamill - No need for other nominations.

Fight of the Year: Takanori Gomi vs. Nick Diaz. If you seen this fight you would agree.

Fighter of the Year: No question Anderson Silva. He is the most dominate fighter in his respective division:

Newcomer of the year: Thierry Sokoudjou. Within 2 fights he went from being unranked to being within the top 7 on everyone’s list.

Most Disappointing Fighter of the Year: Mirko/Chuck……and the winner is Mirko. Sure both Chuck and Mirko lost two fights this year but in my eyes Mirko was upset harder this year because soo much was expected from him.

Best Knockout: Hard one because Scott Smith had a better timing KO over Pete Sell, but GG knockout over CC was just brutal….so GG is the winner.

Best Submission: Another hard one, Frank’s choke over Baroni was a basic submission but it had more feeling behind it then Gomi getting gogo’ed by Diaz, but that fight was more of a fight then the Shamrock/Baroni. I go with Diaz’s gogo because it was a epic finish to an epic bout.

Best news article: Randy retires, then Tito and Dana boxing it out.

Best MMA event: Hero’s middleweight tournament….solid gold.

Best promotion: King of the Cage. With the most live MMA events they are creating the future of this sport.

Best Camp: Team Quest and runner up American Top Team

Worst Judging Decision: Do I even have to say?

Best in Show
HW: Randy Couture runner-up, Gabriel Gonzaga
LHW: Quinton Jackson runner-up, Sokoudjou
MW: Anderson Silva runner-up, Robbie Lawler
WW: Jon Fitch runner-up, Jake Shields
LW:Gesias Calvancanti runner-up, Roger Huerta
