UFC 85: Bedlam Preview

June 5th, 2008 | by Dr J
ufc85.jpg

Just two weeks removed from UFC 84, the UFC returns to England for this Saturday’s UFC 85: Bedlam event. The UFC 85 fight card has undergone more changes than an Elton John concert. Originally, the event was scheduled to be headlined by a Chuck Liddell vs Mauricio Rua fight which turned into a Liddell vs Rashad Evans fight which ultimately gave way to the current Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves headliner. The UFC has loaded the fight card with 11 fights, most of them solid, but none of them outstanding. Let’s take a look at the fight card now.

Main Card

Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves - In my mind, this main event fight is one of the more interesting fights we have seen in the UFC in a while. We all are familiar with Matt Hughes’ career and his credentials. Hughes enjoyed a nearly 3 year run as UFC welterweight champion dominating the best fighters in the world along the way. In recent fights, Hughes’ definitely seems to have slowed however, nearly losing to BJ Penn at UFC 63 and then losing to current UFC champ Georges St. Pierre twice.

Thiago Alves has been a rising star in the UFC since losing his debut against Spencer Fisher at UFC Fight Night 2 in 2005. Alves has won 8 times since then and only lost once to current #1 contender Jon Fitch. Alves is an energy machine and has explosive, overwhelming striking.

My guess is that Matt Hughes is already looking well past this fight against Alves to his upcoming fight with Matt Serra. As much as he claims his heart is still in fighting, it’s evident that is not the case and Hughes even admitted as much after his last loss to GSP. Alves will attack Hughes with much the same energy that St. Pierre did and I think we will see a second or third round KO of the former champ. Winner: Thiago Alves

Marcus Davis vs Mike Swick - Marcus Davis has been on an absolute tear lately and seems to be the UFC’s European poster-boy. Davis’ last three fights have all been overseas and all three fights ended in first round victories for the “Irish Hand Grenage.” Mike Swick is making his second appearance at welterweight after defeating Josh Burkman in a boring, close fight at UFC Fight Night 12. It will be interesting to see how Swick looks this time around and if he can regain any of that power and quickness he possessed while fighting at middleweight. My guess is that Swick will struggle just the same and Davis will be able to overpower him both on the feet and on the ground. Swick will have the reach advantage which could play a big role if he uses it wisely, but I see a second round KO for Davis in the cards. Winner: Marcus Davis

Michael Bisping vs Jason Day - Unlike Mike Swick, Michael Bisping looked excellent in his debut at a lighter weightclass when he defeated Charles McCarthy at UFC 83. Granted he was fighting Charles McCarthy, but Bisping looked extremely sharp and light on his feet at 185 lbs. Bisping’s strength continues to be his standup game and if he can keep the fight standing he is at a huge advantage. Jason Day is not a fighter to be taken lightly. Day made his debut at UFC 83 with a victory over Alan Belcher and will be looking to make a huge statement against Bisping. Day most likely holds the edge in grappling and submission, but I don’t think he will get to spend much time working on the ground. If “Dooms” Day’s defense is not sharp, it could be an early first round exit for him against Bisping. Winner: Michael Bisping

Nathan Marquardt vs Thales Leites - Nate Marquardt is another one of those fighters who has put in the time but never seems to get over the hump. A long time King of Pancrase, Marquardt was stymied in his attempt at the UFC middleweight title when he lost to Anderson Silva at UFC 73. Don’t let that loss cloud your view of Marquardt though, Nate “the Great” is a top-level middleweight and has the edge in experience and physical strength. Since losing his UFC debut to Martin Kampmann at the TUF 4 finale, Thales Leites has won three straight to improve his record to 12-1. Leites does have the big edge in the submission game and that could be where he gains the upper hand against Marquardt. I think Marquardt has good enought standup skills and takedown defense that he should be able to keep most of Leites ground attempts at bay. Look for Nate to score a decision victory or late third round KO. Winner: Nathan Marquardt

Fabricio Werdum vs Brandon Vera - I expect this to be a very fast paced fight. I know judging by Werdum’s last few fights, you might not think so, but I just have a feeling. Brandon Vera knows how good of a fighter Fabricio Werdum is and will come well-prepared. I expect Vera to try and keep the fight standing and test Werdum’s sloppy striking. Don’t underestimate Vera’s striking and clinch game for a second as he has both the speed and power needed to KO an opponent. I give the advantage to Werdum on the ground, of course, but Vera is skilled enough to hold his own there. I just think Werdum is going to continue to try to use his standup game as he did against Andre Arlovski and Gabriel Gonzaga and I don’t see it ending in a victory for him. Winner: Brandon Vera

Undercard

Jorge Rivera vs Martin Kampmann - Winner: Martin Kampmann
Matt Wiman vs Thiago Tavares - Winner: Thiago Tavares
Roan Carneiro vs Kevin Burns - Winner: Roan Carneiro
Luiz Cane vs Jason Lambert - Winner: Jason Lambert
Paul Taylor vs Jess Liaudin - Winner: Paul Taylor
Antoni Hardonk vs Eddie Sanchez - Winner: Eddie Sanchez

If you see my picks on the playground theyre almost exactly the same as your picks here Doc.

The main difference is the main event ofcourse, ive always been a big fan of Hughes, although he may be at the tail end of his career hes still a very dangerous opponent for anyone at WW. I dont think hes looking past Alves, i dont think he would look past anyone and i got Hughes winning this match by GnP late n the 2nd of 3rd.

Davis vs Swick should be an interesting one, i think everyone can agree Davis has been a complete beat lately, i think Swick need to look for a submission to win this fight. Im going with Davis though, i think he will be able to stuff the takedowns and he hits like a mack truck, 2nd round KO.

Marquardt and Leites should be the fight of the night man, i have Marquardt winning by split decision, im really looking forward to this fight.

I not a Vera fan, but i think he should be able to pull this one out if he in is top form. I have this as a 2nd round Ko aswell.

well then guess if one does well we all do well because my picks are the same too aside from Lambert (i got Cane winning) i think Thiago will knock Hughes out, this is Matts second fight since he said “i only have one or two fights left in me” and he still want a piece of Serra. i dont think Hughes will care much about this fight because win or lose it wont really do anything for his career, if he wins its going to look like the legend whooped on another up and comer who wasnt quite ready for the top yet and if he loses he got beat by an up and comer who is ready for the top. i think this fight will tell a lot more about Thiago then Hughes, we all have a good idea where Hughes is at right now but Alves is a lot less battle tested and this fight will be to be see if he can rise up.

guys i just read arlovski is fighting in affliction now,who here thinks AFFLICTION is the next big promotion?I do i really do dana needs to be very careful cuz affliction has some sick fighters already.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 4 months, 1 week ago

yeah sick fighters that need to be paid, lots of money. having Trump on board is going to help a lot but even someone as wealthy as Donald Trump is not going to drain his bank account for something that not going to give him a big return. just think how much this card alone will cost them, they have Fedor, Sylvia, Arlovski, Lil Nog, Lindland, Babalu, Aleksander, Buentello, Barnett, and Rizzo that are probably making good bank from this event, its going to be tough to make money off this card unless they get a huge number of pay per view buys and im not sure there is enough hardcore fans out there that are going to buy it and keep them afloat.

i never thought of that RJ, but im for sure ordering this event.

Richard, RJ and Patrick, as they stated many times which you could find in articles interviews etc.. Affliction is planning to lose money on this event, they said they hope to make money on their next card, which will probably not showcase any big talent.

I dont know how much money Trump is willing to pump into Affliction, but i think after a few events “in the red” if they keep at it, they could create a great promotion and a legit threat to the UFC.

As weve seen, the UFC is not able to handle all the best fighters in the world, this year alone 50% of the guys they released are great fighters. These guys deserve to stay at the top of the heap, but the UFC simply cant afford to pay them what they deserve.

Instead the UFC keeps guys from the TUF show because people know them and they are willing to fight for ALOT less money.

If affliction can absorb atleast some of those guys, they could make it.

I’m not really excited about this card and do not plan on buying it. I am mostly looking forward to the Affliction card coming up. I have no interest in watching Matt Hughes takedown attempts and poor striking. I don’t feel he should still be headlining UFC PPV’s anymore. I sure wouldn’t have minded watching a fight that many of us would beg Joe Silva to put on….Nate Quarry vs. Bisping…but I guess they dropped the ball again.

Alot of people are saying they dont like this card, i have to seriously disagree with you guys. The only thing its really lacking is a strong main event, as everyone knows this was the event with all the substitutions so thats why the main event is somewhat lackluster.

Being a Hughes fan, im happy to see him back in the cage, but thats just me. The other fights on the card are crazy man!

Davis vs Swick promises to be a slugfest becasue we all know what Davis is about and Swick has come out to say he plans to be the aggressor in the fight, cant wait to see these guys clash.

Marquardt vs Leites will probably be fight of the night, i think we will see alot of great technique, especially on the ground, this is the fight im most excited about at 85.

Werdum vs Vera will be interesting considering theyre somewhat at opposite ends of the spectrum, plus theyre fighting for the #1 contender spot.

some pretty good fights here, ill be watching this event 100% and im very excited about it! i wish it was on tonight!!! lol

BV.. glad to see you the eternal MMA fan in good and bad times.. but sorry as a wise man once said.. “don’t church it up boy” … the card is trash, even Dana White admitted it was a debacle… I can’t say its worth $20 save $44.99…. I will catch it online the day after.. I like hearing the Word of God preached, but some preachers are just plain BORING… I like making money and job stability, but some jobs just plain SUCK so they are out no matter how stable, and MMA is wonderful, but some fight cards just plain STINK and this one has some lights in it but mostly just filler… if the 2-3 promising fights don’t deliver, the card proves to be a waste of time.. a dud.. or as White said. “I just want to get this fight card out of the way”.. with 8 people dropping off the card since its ATTEMPTED inception, I cannot blame him for the frustration…

guys this card blows..im sad

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 4 months, 1 week ago

i to feel some sadness at the lack of title fight or big marquee fight…. but that doesnt mean its going to all that bad, now i could waste $50 on all kinds of thing (a trip to McDonalds with my 6 kids costs almost $50) a few rounds on the go-carts, the water park, golf w/ my Pops, shoot i can think of a whole bunch of things but my sons love MMA and so do i and there still at the point where they think Alves vs. Hughes could be just as good as Liddell vs. Shogun, so as a learning tool and the sake of there entertainment i will be getting this card. does it make me a bad father that i used my boys to talk my self into buying this card lol, nah they’ll like it and have a good time watching it with me. if i had to wait till 10pm for it i may not have but it on in an hour so i just cant help myself….. hi everyone my name is Randall-Joseph and im an MMAoholic…. lol
