Shorts with strings do not make major adjustments well, they just bunch up in the front. Look for a pair of shorts with a string and elastic. I got a pair recently from here or bjjhq from ground game, excellent choice.
I have these and they run true to size or a little big, but they do not have a lot of elastic in them. They are not very adjustable, unlike some with he elastic waist band and drawstring.
